Best/easiest live plants for small tank?

tl;dr: what are the easiest plants to put in my 5gal aquarium with pond snails, bladders snails, and asian clams?

Background: about 8 weeks ago I made a jarrarium from the Shenandoah river. Got bladder snails, pond snails and (as I discovered yesterday) some asian clams. All of the plants died, and about half the snails. I bought a 5 gallon tank to try and have better control over the conditions. I want to add some live plants (to help give the snails and clams detritus to eat). Looking for recommendations on plants that will be good for my snildren. I'd love a moss ball for aesthetic reasons, will that work?
