How do backups and syncs interact with iCloud photos?

Upvotes

Phone was dropped in salt water and died.

Got a new phone and restored from iCloud but a few years worth of photos are missing in the middle (2019 is there, 2020-2023 missing, 2024 and up is ok). There are placeholders for them in iCloud but they are grey and don't actually show the photos. Apple can't explain that part to me.

I tried to recover from a previous backup but it also seems to be syncing from iCloud. If photo isn't in latest iCloud would it just delete from my phone after the restore?

I've also got the broken phone at a repair place he got it to turn on in the hope that the missing photos are physically on the device but won't the sync just delete them too?

Has anyone else gotten this weird photo glitch?

I took this picture of my cat earlier today, I didn’t put it through any editing software or edit from the photos app. I noticed this small black rectangle when I sent the picture to my friend. Any ideas what the cause is? I’m on iPhone 17, iOS 26.6.1.

Помогите пожалуйста

Upvotes

I made Action Shot editable after capture — you choose which moments stay

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

A few people mentioned that some of my Action Shot results looked a little crowded, so I wanted to show how it actually works.

LSC captures up to 10 motion positions, but the final composition isn’t fixed. After the shot, you can turn individual positions on or off and keep only the ones you want before saving.

The first frame is used as the base and the moving regions from the following frames are detected and placed back onto it.

iOS 27 — Is there ANY trick to create the old free Shared Albums?

Upvotes

I am using iOS 27 beta on a single Apple device (iPhone 16) and have noticed that new Shared Albums now affect my iCloud storage.

Before iOS 27, I relied on Shared Albums as a form of free cloud space for organizing content—many separate albums could be made without counting against my quota.

Now I appear to have:
Legacy Shared Albums that remain free
New permanent Shared Albums that consume iCloud storage
Temporary Shared Albums that are free but expire after 30 days

I would like the older permanent, storage-exempt albums restored. I prefer not to downgrade or revert iOS 27, and I lack another Apple device.

My question is:
Has anyone found any workaround or trick to create a new legacy-style Shared Album on iOS 27 without it counting toward iCloud storage?

Perhaps via iCloud.com, a specific link or invite method, an Apple Account adjustment, or creation from another source?

I am seeking a way to make new permanent free albums, not alternatives like Google Photos or Drive.

Any ideas or experiments would be welcome. 🙏

I accidentally deleted photos/videos from my iPad while using iCloud Photos — will they be deleted from my iPhone too?

Upvotes

I’ve been using an iPhone XR 64GB since 2019, and recently upgraded to an iPhone 17 256GB. I have around 100,000 photos and videos (~300GB).
Previously, I used Google Photos because my iPhone XR was constantly running out of storage. After upgrading, I moved everything from Google Photos to Apple Photos, so I’m currently using iCloud+ 1TB.
I also have an iPad 10th Gen 64GB with iCloud Photos and Optimize iPad Storage enabled. Photos were taking around 15GB, and eventually my iPad ran out of storage. I needed about 12GB to download a movie, so I deleted some photos/videos and apps, but I still didn’t have enough space.
I then turned off iCloud Photos on the iPad and deleted many more photos/videos. I also emptied the Recently Deleted folder. This finally gave me enough storage.
However, I’ve now realized that iCloud Photos is a syncing service, not a backup like Google Photos.
So I’m really worried:
If I turn iCloud Photos back on on my iPad, will the photos/videos I deleted from the iPad also be deleted from my iPhone/iCloud?
I permanently deleted some photos/videos from the iPad’s Recently Deleted folder, but I don’t remember exactly what I deleted.
Since iCloud Photos is currently OFF on my iPad, how can I check from my iPhone whether everything I deleted from the iPad is still available in iCloud?
Most importantly, what should I do right now? Should I leave iCloud Photos turned off on the iPad?
I really don’t want to accidentally delete anything from my main iCloud Photos library. Any advice would be appreciated.

Photos Library is 672 GB on a 500 GB Mac ...

Post image
Upvotes

So, My Mac only has about 500 GB of internal storage, but my Photos Library shows up as around 672 GB.

When I open the photo library package, originals folder is a little over 300 GB, and resources folder is also a little over 300 GB.

At first I thought Finder might just be double-counting APFS clones/shared blocks. But when I copied the entire Photos Library to an external drive, it actually took up around 672 GB there.

Has anyone seen this before?

Is resources supposed to contain something close to a duplicate of originals, or could this be related to APFS clones / iCloud Photos cache being materialized when copied to another drive?

I mainly just want to back up my photos to an external drive. Do I really need to back up the whole resources folder too, or is there a safe way to leave it out?

Update: It seems that most of the files are under the folder Photos Library.photoslibrary/resources/cpl/cloudsync.noindex/storage/filecache.

I checked some of the files manually, and they appear to be the same photos and videos as the ones in originals.

Update2 - Problem solved.

My solution:
Go to Settings → iCloud → click the Photos icon → turn off “Sync this Mac.”

After I turned this off, the duplicate files in my resources folder were automatically deleted.

So what happened?

My guess is that the filecache folder was storing photos and videos that were waiting to be uploaded to iCloud. But since my iCloud storage was already full, they just got stuck there.

I also think those files weren't actually separate copies of the originals, but rather links or references to them. However, macOS still counted their apparent size, which is why my Photos Library showed up as 672 GB even though my Mac only has around 500 GB of storage.

Then, when I backed up the entire Photos Library to an external drive, macOS seems to have copied those files as actual separate files rather than links/references. So the backup really ended up taking around 672 GB on the external drive.

That's my guess as to what happened.

Anyway, FUCK YOU APPLE!!!!
It took me so long.
