Can't stop Whatsapp from downloading photos onto my phone

As the title says. I've looked everywhere in the app and do not see a way around thi. 'm constantly getting images from one group I need to be in but I can't store all that on my phone and google account.

I've looked in all of the settings. No where. Is there another way to solve this?

What OS? On Android:

• Three dots on the top right corner.
• Settings
• Storage and data
  
• Media auto download, choose to your liking what to download automatically.

There is a setting under Chats that's called "Media visibility". It controls whether images and videos are saved to the gallery or not
