AITA for leaving the table when my mother thanked god for my achievements?

*edit: thanked her praying for my achievements

I 18F finally got into my first choice uni after being placed on hold for a month. Last night while eating dinner with my mother, she randomly brought up the "fact" (with a smirk too) that I couldn't have possibly been accepted by my current uni if it weren't all thanks to her praying everyday. Her statement didn't sit well with me and I told her it was disrespectful to the hours I spent getting A's, working extracurriculars and other essential uni prep work I did alone. However, she immediately picked up her phone and pretended to scroll the entire time I was trying to reason, I knew all my words were going in her left ear and out the right so I left the restaurant. I had told her multiple times that she's free to believe whatever she wants as long as it doesn't involve me, AITA?

Congratulations on your hard work and achievements. You did the right thing not letting someone try to take your dedication away from you.

It’s bad enough to take credit for someone else's success, but smirking about it while doing so is next level manipulative…..Glad OP stood her ground

Congrats, but it’s time to learn the next lesson- you can’t reason with religious zealots. Just accept her flaws and let it go mentally.

NTA-I had grandparents that were the same way except they didn’t have the phone to crawl into when I would ask which god? Then say not the one I don’t believe in. That rattled their cage a bit.

Sounds like your mom needs to be the center of attention. You don’t need to accept that and also hopefully you will have to deal with it less after going to uni. Congratulations!

Nope, NTA at all. There are ways to thank God for helping make stuff happen that doesn't devalue the person's effort. Thanking God for bringing a specific doctor on a sick patient's path is respectful, thanking god for doing the doctor's work is not.

Your mom was just trying to take credit for your achievements.

Congratulations on graduation and getting into the uni you wanted. I'm but a random internet stranger, but I'm proud of you either way :)

Agreed thanking god for things of fate (a the right doctor, or providing an opportunity for a second consideration) is fine, dismissing all the hardwork done outside of that fated fleeting opportunity is disrespectful to everyone who did that work.

OP, this internet stranger mum os proud of you too, hugs sweetie, now keep up the good work, it doesn't go unnoticed or unappreciated to the rest of us.

NTA but just don’t take the bait, or start pointing out every time something goes wrong that clearly she wasn’t praying hard enough

Congratulations on your hard work, enjoy college and getting out of that house

NTA one bit. She could've prayed all she wanted, without you putting in the work there would be absolutely nothing. It's crazy she doesn't realise that.

Ask her why if her prayers pull off miracles, she isn't praying for childhood cancers to be cured instead.

No girl you worked hard for it don't let your mother take that away from you twin x

NTA. Your hard work got you into uni, not her prayers. Credit belongs to you. It's not wrong to want your efforts acknowledged, and leaving when she dismissed you was a boundary, not disrespect.

Your mom using a smirk to credit her prayers while erasing your hard work is a passive aggressive attempt to steal your spotlight

NTA. Don't take it personally. Your mom is just one of those types. Trust me, she knows what you accomplished.

NTA - you put in the work, nobody else did. She isn't giving credit where it's due and that's totally unfair.

NTA Also it'd be funny if she does something great and instead of thanking her you should thank god and give her a taste of her medicine, see how she reacts.

But then again maybe she'll respond also just as negatively.

NTA you worked so hard to get where you are. God played no part in that.

NTA. She’s jealous and wants to both take credit for your accomplishments and make sure you don’t feel proud of yourself for them.

Congratulations btw. I’m so glad I kept praying for you too

Life is hard. Religion and meditation (I think that's essentially what praying is) probably help your mom make it through the day. It's annoying, but it sounds like you live with her, which means she's supporting you.

There are worse things than a supportive parent who's a little annoying! Wish you the best at uni.
