Is finding childcare harder than it should be?
Airdrie parents, I'd like your feedback on a childcare problem I've been looking into.
Finding childcare seems much harder than it should be. There are Alberta directories, Google listings, Facebook groups, daycare websites and dayhome agencies, but parents can still end up calling or messaging multiple providers just to answer a basic question:
Who actually has a space available for my child right now?
I'm exploring the idea of building something specifically for Airdrie that could eventually help parents search based on things such as:
• Child's age
• Neighbourhood/distance
• Full-time, part-time or before/after-school care
• Required drop-off and pickup times
• Actual current availability
• Expected start date
• Licensed/funded care
• Schools served or transportation offered
• Notifications when a matching space becomes available
The idea isn't to create another daycare directory. The goal would be to make it easier to find childcare that actually matches your family's needs and has availability.
Before building anything, though, I'd rather understand the real problem from parents and childcare providers.
For parents:
- How are you currently finding childcare in Airdrie?
- What has been the most frustrating part?
- Have you ever found a provider online only to discover they had no spaces?
- What information do you wish you could see before calling a provider?
- Would alerts when a matching childcare space becomes available actually help?
- Is before/after-school care or transportation to a particular school a bigger problem than regular daycare?
And I'd especially like to hear from dayhome and daycare providers:
How do you currently advertise an opening when you have one? Is finding the right family for an available space a problem for you too?
I'm not selling anything and there isn't an app to download. I'm trying to determine whether this is a real enough Airdrie problem to solve before spending time building it.
Feel free to tell me the idea is unnecessary too, negative feedback is just as useful.

I needed to find a space for my son at the end of August and I started looking at the beginning of July when I secured a new job. I simply did a Google search, called in to see if they had a waitlist or booked a tour online and I was told if he could start at the time I needed or not. I would cross reference all daycares with the government of Alberta’s childcare look up tools where you can find compliance history. Especially important are the childcare incidents, concerns and complaints. I found these variables changed my decisions heavily. I also made sure the food that was provided (or not), playspaces, classrooms and washrooms were maintained and something I truly saw my son enjoying and thriving in as he learns new routines. I was placed on two waitlists (#67 for Airdrie Christian Daycare and at Whizkids). Thankfully almost all other daycares had spaces available because children were aging out.

Thanks, this is really useful. It sounds like availability wasn't actually the hardest part for you, comparing the providers and deciding which one you trusted was more involved.
Roughly how many daycares did you end up researching/calling or touring before choosing one? And if availability, Alberta compliance history, incidents/complaints, meals, hours and facility information had all been available in one place, would that have meaningfully saved you time or was visiting each daycare personally still the most important part?

I didn't find it that hard. Some daycares certainly have waitlists, but others had space available right away. I also used the Dayhome network (Community Links) for a while, I just applied through their website, and they got back to me when they had a provider available. There is a list of providers on the government website, but I found the one where my children are currently attending because of a roadside sign. I think a website with a list of providers and a simple note whether they are currently waist-listed, or taking applicants could be helpful, as well as some way people can flag or recommend childcare? I have no idea about the before and after school care, hopefully it is not as difficult as I've been hearing, because I have to deal with that next year.
