Are Wilson combats barrels any good?

They are not on my shortlist of good barrels. Expensive and unlapped.

Specifically for Grendel?

Precision Firearms made cut rifled (Krieger/Bartlein) is god tier

Then Satern cut rifled (not Liberty)

Then Criterion rounding out A tier.

The only one I don't have is the Satern, but have heard great things throughout years. I would rank Proof barrels high on the list also.

 I get my barrel information from a guy that knows WAY more about this stuff than I do. He is a kreiger and bartlein guy, but he said proofs variable (forgot the acronym, pxt?) Has him interested.

Hard for me to keep up with him and the tech honestly.

You know anything about the variable rifling?

I'm am also pretty intrigued about the new progressive twist barrels myself. It's basically a barrel that starts out with a ridiculously slow twist rate and increases throughout the length of the barrel. People have done similar things before (gain twist) but it usually was just 2 different twist rates. Proofs pxt barrels starts the bullet out almost not spinning at all.

In theory, this should extend barrel life, lower pressure, and recoil. With the pxt, the bullet isn't being forced to turn into a high speed drill bit as soon as the powder ignites. It basically moves straight through the rifling and then starts to twist.

Drill bit analogy changed the way I think of barrels.

Pretty interesting stuff. I guess that would mean that for each barrel lengh, the pxt (for lack of a better term) would have to be different, or tuned for that lenght right?

Yes. They will most likely only offer one or two barrel lengths per cartridge, due to manufacturing constraints.

That makes sense. I get why my buddy is excited about it, but I wonder what advantages an average shooter would see. I mean, if price isn't too far off from other quality barrels then no reason not to get one i suppose, but I'm guessing proof is gonna be proud of em.

These seem like barrels for serious shooters, from the little ive heard on them. At least for now. I doubt a shooter at my level of experience would be able to articulate, durring shooting, why its better. But I'm excited to see if this sparks more innovation with the rest of the mfgs out there. 

Also hoping one day i get to the level where I can hold a conversation about barrels with him hahaha.

Thanks for your input on this today. Love learning new things.

Np.

As far as the benefits for a average shooter.

For frequent/high volume shooters, it would mean extended barrel life. Essentially it will retain its accuracy for a longer length of time before diminishing.

For average shooters that buy factory ammo, this may open the door for manufactures to make hotter ammunition specifically for these barrels because of the lower pressure. That's very unlikely though, due liability reasons.

Like I said, these are just theories. We need more testing and data on these barrels before we can definitively say what's true.

The only one that offers pistol lengths is Precision Firearms. Were there any other pistol length Grendel options that you would recommend?

No. Avoid. I had two AR barrels from them that I couldn't get to better than 2 MOA at 100 yards with 10 shot groups with multiple factory match loads nor handloads. They also didn't post my negative reviews. I tried contacting customer support and they said they'd look into it but if it wasn't the barrel, they would charge me shop time.

I believe helix 6 has overstock carbon 18" barrels in 6.5 Grendel for $450 right now.

My two Wilson barrels are great. My 16" 6.5 Grendel Wilson barrel I have currently shoots 1.5" 20 shot groups with my 100 gr ELDM handloads and 123 gr AAC black tips.

Definitely didn’t empress me for the price point
I’m a hunter and do very little “target” practicing so unless you gonna run it a lot i would suggest doing some more research and then use the old yellow pad

And
minus on one side

And see what adds up for what YOU are Gonna use it for
