Gotta make sure I didn’t hide anymore bugs under the plate.

I’ve been testing different foods to see what Goose likes and he loves dubias, quail eggs and blueberries but hasn’t touched any banana or strawberries I’ve presented to him. Which is totally fine since they need more protein as babies. Any other small foods I should try and see if he likes? I have greens and lots of ground meats but I thought I should wait on any ground meats till he’s grown.

Males vs Female cuddliness?

Upvotes

Anyone notice a difference in "cuddliness" of tegus between males and females?

It feels like a see way more picts/vids of male tegus being all snuggly, tolerable of petting, and handling than females, so I got curious and wanted to see what others may have noticed-- especially from people who have had experience with more than one tegu.

My blue girl is not into affection, and mostly tolerates being held on my lap when she is too sleepy to climb off 😅

HELP! Hello, I do not own a tegu but have reptile experience. What are the requirements if someone were to adopt an adult from someone who can't care for them anymore?

Upvotes

This isn't about to happen, just a question. We have a lot of reptile experience and don't really care for puppy's, we have a soft spot for adult animals. This is just an idea at this point, but what would be required for a family, let's say with no setup or experience prior, to adopt an adult tegu?

Like what kind of environment does he need and can he be allowed free roam? Do they get along with other pets? Do they poop in one spot like other reptiles? Is there anything else to know?

I'm not aiming to get one, I just wanna know what the people who most know about these guys woulg have to say in such a circumstance?

By far the best decision I’ve ever made.

I’m legitimately in love right now. This has been a dream reptile of mine since I was a little kid. I never would have thought I would eventually have one of these gorgeous Tegus. I was shaking like a leaf when I was unboxing him or her🤣. Also I decided on the name Goose!🙌

Toesy finally unleashed her bowels today in the tub. She's been letting out small poops here and there but ive been on the lookout for The Big One since the vet said she seemed a bit constipated in her x rays. This was about 5 poops in one n she let it out less than 2 minutes into bathtime. She seems to be feeling a bit better already but I'll be watching to make sure her bowel movements go back to a normal schedule

Question about vacation & Tegu.

Upvotes

We adopted our 4-year-old boy early spring. We're traveling this coming week (Mon. pm - Fri. pm) and would like advice about keeping him safe while we're gone. He's in a 10x4 enclosure, with adequate heating and basking spots as well as fresh water. He's been sleeping a lot lately so he may be brumating? We normally feed two times per week w/snacks in between. I'm concerned about food rotting in his tummy (if I feed him right before we leave) if he doesn't get up to bask on his own while we're gone. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

Question about girl tegu size

Post image
Upvotes

I got potato October -November 2024. She’s about two years old and never brumated. Still quick as lightning and very active. Shes 31 inches. Vet says she’s very healthy. She’s broke countless basking lights and I’ve had to get her multiple uv lamps. I’ve also had her on vitamin and calcium supplements and fish oils but she doesn’t seem to grow much except for that first year where she grew like a wildfire. I know that girls are much smaller and slimmer than males. She’s 5lbs. Eats different meats and berries every other day. I’ve started her on salmon and berries. I know that genetics can play a factor but how much I don’t know. I got her from petco in 2024. I know that petco isn’t a great place to get reptiles but I didn’t know that before I got her. Petco said tegus get to 4ft. My male is growing rapidly so I know he’ll get around that range but I don’t expect potato to get anywhere past maybe 3’. Potato is starting to make nests out of my clothes. She’s a crazy gu.

Anyway with all this information and knowing that petco has horrible genetics for their reptiles is this why she’s small. Every picture I feel like I’ve looked up of female tegus they seem small but not this small. I feel like a ton of it has to do with perspective of pictures and better genetics. It’s really hard to find pictures of female tegus when most people want the males because of their temperament and their looks. Does she seem too small? Again the vet said she’s healthy I just want another owner opinion. This vet has seen all my reptiles.

Possible fungal infection

Post image
Upvotes

So I noticed what looked like some stuck shed/crusty spots on my girls leg yesterday and got her to the vet today - we believe it's a fungal infection that we caught super early but I just wanted to post and kind of get suggestions on what I can do besides her medication to help her heal. pic attached for reference of the spots. She is about 15 months old and a red tattoo, as you can see she is deep in shed right now. Also any advice on how to get her to take the oral medication without a fight would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Maurice: The One-Year Old Tegu with a Proclivity for Human Flesh

Upvotes

Hey y'all,

I'm not sure where else to turn to since my breeder has yet to email me back after I sent an email detailing my situation. But the tl;dr is this: I have a one year old red tegu who really likes biting my hands and has once bitten my arm enough to scar. None of these are aggression bites, they're all smell, get closer, lunge or test bite every single time. If I wear gloves he's fine, but if he smells a washed and sanitized hand, it's food. The only thing I'm not sure of is if it's just my smell or if it's people in general. My boyfriend has stated that he's picked him up with his bare hands and Maurice decided that he wasn't food. But he has bitten my boyfriend's foot once and really went after him when he wore socks. I'm wondering if it's possible that I'll never be able to handle him without gloves, or if it's just best to keep the gloves on until he gets to be a more docile adult. If I should try and get him used to hands, how should I go about it? So far I've been approaching with a closed fist but he still treats it like a hunk of meat to chew on. I'm also wondering if how I feed him has anything to do with it, but I'll detail that below.

The full situation:

I got Maurice when he was 6 months old and currently he's just over a year. Our bonding process has been like most tegu owners in that the slow, daily repetition of handling has had him improve a lot. He's gone from terrified of anything moving, to not caring if he's picked up, moved, squished, grabbed, or squeezed by my gloved hands. I used to handle him bare handed until he started biting my hands, fingers, and death rolled on my arm. I didn't move to gloves-only right away, but instead just limited interactions with hands to a closed fist plus leaving them stationary. When I'm not close enough for him to chase or lunge I do a lot of expressive movements with my hands just so he's used to the fact that they can move. So, after awhile he went from chasing my hands from across the hallway to not reacting to them unless they're within biting range. The gloves that I've been using started with a pair of leather driving gloves, but I have also bought a few actual bite gloves just in case (guberty is fast approaching).

Maurice gets let out of his enclosure up to twice a day. Once always in the mornings, and if he wants to come out in the evenings then I let him roam then as well. He only gets fed in the mornings every other day. So, at least half of the time he comes out it doesn't mean he's getting food. If he's getting food I open the bathroom door and I have a towel set out where we do the actual feeding. Sometimes I have to lead him to the towel via his target (a tennis ball on a stick), but sometimes he goes there on his own and impatiently waits. I then wear a jacket and a small pair of bite gloves that I only use during feedings (maybe I need to only wear a certain pair of shoes during feedings since he's mostly smelling those?) and he is fed each bite via a pair of feeding tongs. We're currently clicker training, so while in the past (before a month ago) I would be not involved at all with his feedings, now I am because I want him to be both target and clicker trained (which he is just about!). This has not affected his proclivity for human flesh. Before I was feeding him this way I used to just set his bowl out in the living room and let him have at it. Despite this he still started seeing my hands as food anyway, and so I thought that moving feedings to a secluded location would help. When outside time is done Maurice will either go back to his terrarium on his own, or I have to lead him there via his target.

During the times when he's not getting fed I'll wear gloves and pet him while he's walking around or basking, but any time he sees my bare hand near him he will try and go after them. When this started I tried getting him back used to my hands by just letting him bite them until he was bored, and that made some progress, but then he bit and death rolled my arm, so I cut back to gloves only for awhile, and now he chases after them 100% of the time again. So, I'm not sure if it was actually progress. My goal is to be able to do everything I'm currently able to do with him without gloves, but his brain seems to have hard coded my scent with food, even if my hands are washed and sanitized thoroughly. So, any advice in regards to breaking a lizard's love of biting his owner's hands? Should I just go back to letting him chew on them for awhile? He's only getting bigger so I'm not sure how much longer I'd be willing to tolerate that. Has anyone else here successfully broken this habit? I've read in some places that even tamed down tegus will sometimes still mistakenly bite even if they don't have the association, so maybe gloves are just the way to go in that case, but I have this selfish need to be able to touch and feel my tegu directly instead of wearing cumbersome gloves all the time.

As a thank you for reading this wall of text I've included a recent video of Maurice getting all the mice out of a puzzle toy. He also recently had his one year check up at the vet and took to being handled really well!

Hello! This is my red tegu who is roughly 15 months old. It is 75cm from nose to tail tip.

Would love some input on what gender it could be as I’m having a hard time seeing it myself. If it happens to be male, I’d really appreciate if someone could circle the little scales/buttons that indicate that.

Thanks in advance!
