Interestingly enough Hans Jurgen Massaquoi - who ended up moving to America and working for the renowned Ebony magazine in later years - said of his childhood that he grew up believing Black families were 'superior' simply because he observed that his family were attended to solely by European domestic staff, chauffeurs etc and treated with deference when out in Hamburg. Most of the Massaquois guests tended to be upper class or otherwise renowned Black figures.

The Massaquois, when preparing to leave Hamburg just before the war broke out - had offered to take him and his Mother back to Liberia, but she was a working class woman from a rural background and had been hesitant to return with them, fearing his health in a foreign environment. Subsequently, when Nazism entered his life, he said it altered his ENTIRE understanding of how Europeans perceived the world outside.

Prior to desegregation, Race Films were beloved for presenting films to their target audience that portrayed wealthy, glamorous or middle class Black leads - and not the oafish caricatures and tropes that dominated Hollywood.

This attack was part of a series of crackdowns by Soviet troops and the KGB in Lithuania in response to the country's declaration of independence on March 11, 1990. Soviet troops occupied numerous governmental buildings and key state archives, as well as launching an active campaign of hunting deserters and those avoiding service in the Soviet Army (including attacks on psychiatric hospitals on March 27, where draft dodgers were hiding). These events were coupled with a severe economic blockade of Lithuania. They served as a prelude

Between January 11 and January 13, 1991, the USSR launched wider crackdowns against Lithuania, seizing key buildings such as the press house seen here and the TV tower. 14 civilians were killed and over 140 injured, as Soviet troops used live ammunition and ran tanks into the crowds during the January events.

The USSR formally recognized Lithuanian independence on September 6, 1991, only after the August coup and the crippling of Soviet state power.

The USSR would be formally dissolved on December 26, 1991, and the last Russian troops would leave Lithuania on August 31, 1993.
