Salam Alaikum everyone! We just recently opened our office in Minneapolis area (more info will publish soon) BUT we are looking for a few projects to work on and thought I’d see what local businesses (MN) are working with.

We’re doing free web design for a few businesses in the area. It could be a design that needs updating, something half-finished, or a new idea you haven’t had the chance to work on yet.

Posts like this? And most of the time they are diasporas.
What i don’t understand is why would a Somali born and educated abroad would support civil wars, qabiil wars , argagaxiso the same thing that made us global refugees?

I would hace expected this kind of posts from uneducated ones but even being abroad and getting good education while you see how others live around the world and you decided to glorify your people killing each other, i really don’t know what to say

I'm writing a novel and I would like one of my main characters to use idiomatic Somali to chide her best friend for being oblivious to her feelings for her.

Details:
The year is 1989
The place is Boston, MA
The character speaking is Somalian
The character she's speaking to is a Hazara Afghan refugee who is very smart, warm hearted, but also very culturally myopic and emotionally clumsy.
The speaker specifically using her native language to say this because she knows her friend won't understand her, and because her friend frequently asks her where she's from (and for various reasons the speaker declines to tell her).
The POV is the Hazara character, so she doesn't know what she's hearing is Somali, only what it sounds like. If the reader looks it up, it would count as a free easter egg.

Said expression would either be a confession of affection and/or a playful way of calling the character a fool.

What are some phrases or expressions or poetry quotes I could use for this?

You know when you’re engaging in small talk with an cadaan person, and they ask “where you from” honestly, why do a lot of ethnics like ourselves act weird and say things like “I’m Australian” “I’m British” and play dumb when the person is obviously not asking that??

I’m not stupid, ik the question may imply an unsaid statement of how “you do not belong here” but I feel like we approach this with an inferiority complex by having to state “no I was born here hence I’m Australian mate” yeah but that’s what’s not being asked? You’re most likely a first or second generation immigrant, you look ethnic asf. Honestly even if an cadaan asks me this question maliciously, I tell them straight up I’m Somali bro, let’s just not beat around the bush 😂 now you can piss off, because personally idgaf about the opinion of ignorant people.

So I’m curious if there’s more to why some of yall get pissy about this 😂 or if we can settle this rn 😂💯🗣️

It could be something they did, something they said, the way they made you feel, or even a small gesture that stuck with you ?

I was in a previous talking stage with someone I met through the charity and volunteer work I do. What really stood out to me was the genuine passion she had for helping people who couldn’t always help themselves.

We eventually went our separate ways, but she always went above and beyond in Helping those in need that was something I genuinely admired and valued about her.

May Allah reward her for her efforts, Amiin.

There is no single Arab culture. From the cosmopolitan Arab cultures of the Levant to the Bedouin cultures of the Gulf and beyond, Arab culture is not a monolith. This is simply a truism, evident to anyone who cares to look, right? So what exactly is this discussion about “Arabization”?

I think it is a misnomer, a misleading term used to describe a well-known phenomenon in a way that confuses the reader. After decades of civil war beginning in the 1990s, Somalis were traumatized, and we collectively sought refuge from that chaos and horror by becoming more religious. That is something nobody can seriously dispute. It is a fact, whatever your feelings about it may be. You can see it simply by reciting your abtirsi. Your name is most likely Mohamed, Abdullahi, or Abdirahman, but go back a few generations and you will see the occasional Warsame, Faarax, or Guuleed appear. From the clothes ordinary people wear to the way we address one another, a social evolution has occurred. There is nothing particularly extraordinary about that. If you know anything about world history, you know that societies change in this way. It is only natural.

Historically, we have been Muslim since perhaps the tenth century onwards, and, as far as I am aware from the historical record, no Arab power has ever ruled over us, apart from a few exceptions in some coastal towns. Islam did not reach us by the sword. We adopted it through trade and contact with our neighbours, while the various Somali kingdoms that emerged across the Horn, seeking legitimacy and power, took it upon themselves to proselytize among the large populations living in the hinterlands. Perhaps they sometimes employed coercion or violence, but we were never ruled by Arabs.

In that sense, Islam was already deeply woven into our cultural fabric. Of course, it was very different from the twentieth-century Wahhabi and Salafi forms of Islam. Somali Islam was largely a deeply syncretic Sufi tradition. The only people who seem to believe that Somalis became Muslims in the 1990s are two kinds of extremists: literal Takfiri terrorists and terminally online atheists. Ironically, they arrive at the same conclusion.

In my opinion, this discussion about Arabization is really a lament for the loss of a modern society. Young people see old videos of Somali women and men dancing together, laughing, and simply enjoying themselves. They see women attending school and going to work, wearing only a small head covering to keep their hair in place. We appeared to be a modern nation.

Compare that with today. We are a joke, an embarrassment among the nations of the world. Every form of misanthropy imaginable is committed daily, without consequences or the slightest semblance of the rule of law. If you want to inject people with the saliva of Qur’anic teachers, that is acceptable. If you want to murder and plunder, just make sure you have a powerful clan and enough money to protect you from the consequences. Starvation and mass murder have become national pastimes, while the diaspora remains preoccupied with discussing the next relationship drama to unfold.

We are confused bunch to say the least. We confuse natural reaction to calamity people have namely becoming overly religious with some deeper conspiracy, where there is none. But to be charitable i understand the sentiment, it is true we lost something but we don't seem to know what we lost. We are yearning and begging for it to come back, but we don't know who we are calling.

Some time ago, I published an essay titled Cargo-Cult Governance, and I think its central argument applies here as well. We often confuse outward appearances with lived realities. Some of us imagine that modernity will arrive if we wear Western clothes and present ourselves as modern. But true modernity means becoming confident in your own culture while building a form of human existence that becomes the envy of the world.

As long as our people continue to live in squalor, outward transformations will mean very little. We could become even more religious, or some totalitarian government could, through some weird historical accident, seize Somalia and attempt to de-Islamize the country, as Atatürk did in Türkiye. Yet if the material conditions of ordinary people remain unaddressed, neither path will deliver us from our predicament. So I suggest my dear reader, go beyond the headlines, and read for yourself, and come to your own conclusions.

I’m pretty sure the guy posting this is Ethiopian. Why are they always trying to undermine our territorial sovereignty and statehood? Ethiopia is a cancer to not just Somalia but the entire Horn. The faster this fake empire disintegrates the better chance we have of fully stabilizing.

I’m seeing so many TikToks about how Somalia became Arabised because of Wahhabism and that we’ve abandoned our culture. These type of TikTok’s are always made by people who won’t explicitly say they’ve left the religion because they’d be labelled a kaffir and dismissed

so instead they keep their own religious views ambiguous and post subtle messages that gradually encourage other people to develop resentment and hate towards the religion.

People follow them because it doesn’t appear that the message is coming from an atheist/agnostic. Instead, it comes across as being from a fellow Muslim who is just more progressive in their views, so it feels like a safe space for Muslims to engage with

Guys, I think I’m seriously starting to consider a contract marriage or something at this point, and I honestly never thought I’d even be considering something like this. 🥲
I’ve been trying to find a job and build some kind of independence for myself, but because I’m a foreigner, I can’t legally work here. I’ve done my MBA, I’ve spent almost two years trying to find something decent, and I’m still stuck in the same place. And on top of that, my dad won’t let me leave the country either.
It’s honestly getting really depressing. I know I’m capable of more, I’ve worked hard for my education, and I just want to have my own life, career, and freedom. But it feels like every possible door is closed.
So now I’m genuinely thinking about marriage as an escape plan, which sounds absolutely insane when I say it out loud. 😭 But then there’s the other problem: I haven’t even been able to find a decent guy to marry. 💀
I don’t actually know what I’m looking for by posting this. Maybe advice, maybe someone who understands, or maybe I just needed to get it off my chest because I’m feeling incredibly stuck right now.

My family is trying to trace the relatives of a man who died. My mother knew him personally, but she never met his family. We have some information about his name, qabiil, work, and possible deegaan, but we are unsure whether every detail is accurate. His biological son has taken a DNA test, so we could confirm a connection if we found possible relatives. The difficult part is knowing where to begin looking. For anyone who has done this within the Somali community, what actually helped?
