मुझे पता है आप लोग कहेंगे कि इसमें वर्तनी की गलतियाँ हैं, लेकिन मैंने शब्दों को वैसे ही लिखा है जैसे हम यहाँ उच्चारण करते हैं। Eg - वह "देखीं" होता है पर हम यहा बड़ी "ई" नहीं खिचते सिर्फ छोटी "इ" इसतेमाल करते है पर लिखते आम हिंदी की तरह लिखते है ।

स्वरचित Update: Scientific Study on writing time of Hindi

Upvotes

Few days ago i posted ( Scientific Study on writing time of Hindi : r/Hindi) that I am trying to formulate a model to show that writing in Hindi takes more time than in English. Is anybody aware of any Scientific Study on this subject and any data on Indian people (age-wise) on handwriting speed in Hindi?.

My concern was : While everything is moving digital, major exams like UPSC, State PCS, and board exams still rely heavily on handwritten answers. The reality is that writing in Devanagari or other Indian scripts involves top lines (shirorekha), distinct curves, and matras—making it structurally more time-consuming per word compared to the continuous flow of the Latin alphabet. When speed directly affects marks, script mechanics create an invisible disadvantage.

It is a two-part research question:

  1. Word Count & Density: In the first part, I will show that expressing the same quality of material requires more words in Hindi than in English. I plan to analyze the word count of IGNOU course materials across various subjects, as well as standard translated books available in both Hindi and English.
  2. Physical Writing Effort & Stroke Kinematics: In the second part, I want to investigate whether the pen travels a greater physical distance when writing the same content in Hindi versus English. This will account for factors like pen lifts (picking up the pen) and the execution of the shirorekha (top line).

I tested the first part of my hypothesis: Hindi needs about 11% more words than English to say the same thing. I measured it on 4,140 official translations.

There's a common assumption that Hindi text is "longer" or "wordier" than English. I wanted to check whether that's actually true, and by how much.

Parliamentary questions solve that. When a Ministry answers a question in the Lok Sabha, the answer is placed before the House in both Hindi and English, translated by the Ministry itself. Same content, same day, professional translation, no editorial shortcuts.

The data

Lok Sabha 18, Session 8 — all 4,140 unstarred questions, both language versions. That's 8,280 documents, downloaded from the Digital Sansad website, roughly 2.65 million words (26 lakh) of English and 3.02 (30 lakh) million words of Hindi.

Every single question had both versions. Not one was English-only.

The result

Hindi longer by (median) +11%
Middle 50% of documents +7% to +15%
Documents where Hindi was longer 95.4%
Documents where Hindi was shorter 3.3%

📖

Etymology of Pundit / Pandit shared by Merriam-Webster.

Post image
Upvotes

Saw this tweet by Merriam-Webster.

In Hindi, I've always known pandit to mean a scholar, a wise person, or a priest who conducts religious ceremonies.

How has the word evolved in English, and what does Merriam-Webster mean when they say "It now usually means...something different"?

On a related note, shampoo is another word with Hindi roots. What other common English words originated from Hindi?

विनती Help identifying lyrics in a song

Upvotes

Hello, and sorry if the post doesn't belong in the subreddit, I'm not fully sure it's hindi or perhaps a different language spoken India. I really need help identifying the exact language this song is in and what it says (in the original language, though a translation with it is also appreciated). Here's the clip separated from the music so it can be heard more clearly: https://file.garden/aDutjYswCxoG0Vx1/sampleee.mp3

It's a sample I've found used in some songs and i can't find the original, and I think knowing what language its in or whats being said would help me greatly. And also the voice and words just sound very pretty.

देवनागरी Is it true that Hindu names don't start with the "F" sound?

Upvotes

Saw a video claiming that the "F" sound doesn't exist in Sanskrit, so native Hindu names never start with it. Looking to confirm if this linguistic claim is accurate!

As someone from Lucknow, I realized I have always pronounced "Pha" (फ़ / फ) as "Fa" due to the local Urdu-influenced cultural and linguistic environment.

So I'm wondering if the claim is true?

देवनागरी Does Adhikar mean 'Right' or 'Authority or 'Entitlement' ?

Upvotes

I ask this because there is semantic confusion in a sanskrit verse translation from Bhagwad Gita.

Bhagavad Gita: 2:47

कर्म में ही तेरा अधिकार है, फल में कभी नहीं। तू कर्मफल का हेतु मत बन, और अकर्म में भी तेरी आसक्ति न हो।

What does Adhikar truly mean here?

Does it mean:

You don't have the right to fruits? Or

You don't have the authority over fruits? Or

You don't have the entitlement for fruits?

All the english words are used loosely, but it makes a vast difference on how the verse itself is read.

So please help
