[Mod Post] Quick PSA

Upvotes

DMing users fundraiser links is still breaking our no fundraiser rules. This is not the sub for this, we do this to prevent scams and bad actors. There are other subs that do allow fundraisers as well as local groups, and we encourage you to post there if you need assistance.

Additionally, be very careful with any user claiming to know of alternatives for medicine in treating insulinoma. This has been popping up a lot lately, and it is extremely dangerous. A lot of these "homemade" remedies will increase the risk of other diseases, as well not keep their sugar levels at an appropriate range. Improper insulinoma management will lead to blood sugar crashes, seizures and even death.

As owners we often wish to do the best we can for them, and it's really easy to fall for a miracle remedy. Be mindful. Be careful.

If you find people breaking these rules, don't hesitate to report or DM the sub to ask.

My girl is just weirdly obsessed with this specific tube of hand cream 😂 I keep finding it stashed under cupboards or the sofa. Her friend is the same with any kind of rubber 🫣 What are your ferrets obsessed with?

Meet Sindri and Boy.:

- Sindri’s favorite toy is an old ankle brace. Boy’s favorite toy is a little orange fish with a bell in it. It is his emotional support fishie and he carries it everywhere while he roams.
- they have full access to the entire house save for the front room because Sindri has unpotted the same succulent 6 times now and there is no safe place to put it. I can only assume the plant harmed him in a past life as all other plants are intact.
- Sindri once destroyed $514 worth of adult toys, and to this day is obsessed with premium grade silicone
- Sindri is a notorious revenge pooper. Boy has a 100% litter box success rate, but can and will fake using the litter box so my husband and I will praise him.
- Boy is desperately in love with the giant ferret that lives on the bed (our dog, Indiana, who is 13 and mostly just ignores his existence). Don’t worry, any and all interactions are supervised. I work from home.

These boys have brought so much joy into my home. I’m forever grateful for their existence.

My boy is not amused by my new coffee table book. Probably because I threaten to make mittens out of him when he digs up my plants 🤣

[Help] How do i know if my ferret's adrenal implant fell out?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

He got the implant August 17, it's now sept 7, and it was inserted and then the wound was glued. There's a little piece that is stuck to his fur, but I'm not sure if that's just a piece of dead skin or dried glue that is supposed to fall out. If i touch under it, I'm not really feeling the "grain of rice". It's hard to see with the picture, sorry!

[Ferret Photo] *poop warning!* does this look normal?

For context, I switched my ferrets food maybe a week and a half to two weeks ago from the orijen cat food to a a mix of the wysong/ oxbow food. It gave my ferrets HORRIBLE diarrhea even tho I did it in a mixture but I didn’t do it in a good enough time frame. So I ended up switching back to the orijen for now but they still have diarrhea. They are all also eating and drinking completely normal tho. Is it maybe something more or just the food? I have quite a few ferrets and almost all of their upset stomachs went away except a few of them

[Discussion] Can California satisfy its duty to act on a citizen petition simply by forwarding it to another agency?

Upvotes

For those who have followed our legalization efforts, Petition 2025-003 has now produced a surprisingly important question that has little to do with the merits of ferret legalization itself:

Can a government agency satisfy a law requiring it to act on a citizen petition simply by forwarding the petition somewhere else?

That's essentially one of the issues we're now fighting over in court.

The Fish and Game Commission received Petition 2025-003 and later referred it to the Department of Fish and Wildlife for review and recommendation.

The State's position in its demurrer is that this action satisfied the Commission's obligations under the Administrative Procedure Act.

But that creates an obvious problem:

What happens next?

If referral itself is enough, what requires the petition to ever return to the Commission?

What requires a final decision?

What requires written reasons?

And what prevents a petition from remaining under “further consideration” indefinitely?

In other words:

Receive → Forward → Disappear.

This isn't just a theoretical concern for ferret advocates. We went through a remarkably similar process with an earlier legalization petition more than a decade ago. It was described publicly as being processed, but the process never produced the kind of final resolution we're still seeking today.

That history is why I've been looking closely at something called the absurdity doctrine.

It's a principle of statutory interpretation that, in simplified terms, says a statute shouldn't be interpreted in a way that produces an absurd result or defeats the operation of the law itself.

And that's what makes Petition 2025-003 interesting beyond the ferret issue.

If a statutory petition process is supposed to produce an agency decision and reasons for that decision, can the process really be satisfied by an internal referral that never produces either one?

I wrote about the argument and why it matters here:

https://legalizeferrets.org/when-bureacracy-breaks-the-law-the-absurdity-doctrine-and-petition-2025-003/

I'm curious what other ferret people think.

Should a government agency eventually have to give petitioners a yes or no answer—or should “we forwarded it for further consideration” be enough?

[Help] Separation during a vacation?

Post image
Upvotes

My boyfriend and I are going on a 14-day vacation soon, and unfortunately, we can’t take our 3-year-old ferret with us. We’re planning to leave her with our parents while we’re away, but we’re worried about her developing separation anxiety. Until now, she has never been without us for more than 3 days, so two weeks feels like a really long time.

We’ve been thinking about leaving some of our worn clothes with her so she can still smell us, and calling on facetime so she can see us and hear our voices. We’re not sure, though, whether that would actually help or potentially confuse her.

Do you have any tips for making a two-week separation easier for a ferret if you have been in a similar situation? How did your ferrets handle being away from you, and is there anything that helped them feel more comfortable?

Working in rescue is never easy. These girls were our second group of ferrets ever! Permenent fosters from our ferret welfare society/rescue. They were deemed un-rehomable due to behavioural issues. Now they are older, with sudden health declines & behavioural stress reciveing treatments, we have decided to help them cross peacefully.

You see alot of posts on here asking when the time is right to pts. You know your animals best. When their quality of life & welfare is declining, you need to decide what is best for them. In our case, a moment too soon is better then a moment too late. These babies are having a vet come to our home to pts, so they can spend their last time in comfort & stress-free. Love you forever my girls♡

Yes, that’s his name. He had a brother named Dummy who passed almost a year ago now. I named them with endearment. They both had insulinoma and were treated accordingly for it. I love them both so terribly much. They get to be together again now.

[Health] Ferret chewing on tail?

Upvotes

Hi All-

Looking for some insight. I have an approximately 8 year old ferret with adrenal disease that has recently started seemingly chewing in her tail until it bleeds.

I say seemingly, because we've never actually seen her chew on the tail, just the aftermath. I took her to the vet last week, they agreed thats what it looked like and prescribed an antibacterial cream. By Saturday it was fully stabbed over, but Saturday night she seemingly did it again and looks to have gone at it again today.

A few notes...

  1. She lost her cage mate of 7 years in February. I decided not to get another ferret due to her age.

  2. She just had blood work on Tuesday for a potential heart disorder, were waiting for the results. Unclear if she's experiencing discomfort from that

Does anyone have any experience here? Our theory is separation anxiety but really have no idea. I recognize quite old and am ready to make the tough decision if need by but am hoping someone has experience here.

It is just a reminder and acknowledgment of the fact that it is hard to make good photos of ferrets. There are moments we pick up our camera to capture the moment - and it is only clear in our minds and hearts.
