Research suggests dolphins use signature whistles and other sound patterns to identify one another and maintain social groups. That means a dolphin may know who is who by sound alone.

I saw this juvenile with it's mother years ago in Florida and have always wondered what might have caused this near perfectly circular scar. It has normal rake marks on its dorsal and it's mother, in front, had a notch on her dorsal but in all my years living in Florida, I never before or after saw a similar scar to this one.

If you haven’t read it, it’s a fictional novel from the perspective of dolphins. I don’t want to spoil too much but it’s a beautiful and brutal story, and I learned a lot.
