Husbandry Discussion 🔥🦎HOT WEATHER GUIDE - Keeping your tank and reptiles cool

Upvotes

This is our annual Hot Weather guide for those who need advice on keeping their tank below 26c / 82f.

Place ice cubes on top of the mesh away from the geckos resting area - the water will drip down into the soil or evaporate, allowing cool air to circulate around the tank
Swamp cooler - ice cubes in a bucket with a fan behind it to push cool air around the room
Ice cubes inside water bowl - quick evaporation, same premise with allowing cool air to circulate
Spraying the tank with room-temperature water
Portable AC units - those in the UK can now buy small ice cube AC units which are similar to that of a swamp cooler!
Refreshable gel ice packs - specifically gel only! These should be wrapped around in a cloth of some type and laid on top of the tank mesh
Escape-proof mesh playpens - temporary relief for your animal, make sure to provide lots of foliage for them so they feel safe and comfortable
Chilled CGD

Spraying with cold or frozen water - this WILL cause thermal shock, and will stress your animal out, please stick to room temperature water
Ice packs inside the vivarium
Free roaming
"Bathing" in cool water - similar premise, geckos do not need to swim and this will stress them out instead of helping them

Signs of overheating include:

🔴 Lethargy
🔴 Restlessness / running around in the tank / attempting to escape
🔴 Consistent refusal to eat
🔴 Significant weight loss
🔴 Wrinkled skin, kinked tail, sunken eyes (dehydration)
🔴 Burrowing

These symptoms don't necessarily mean your animal is overheating, as things like burrowing or refusal to eat could be linked to husbandry or that your gecko is new to its environment and is still settling in. If you are ever unsure, please take your animal to a vet to get them checked up.

Keep safe, drink water, and make sure you chill out too!
Any questions? Feel free to ping us a ModMail, and we'll be happy to answer.

this is ciggy, my new crested gecko. i saw an ad posted on facebook for a gecko that needed to be rehomed and jumped on it. this baby (can’t sex quite yet, just gonna refer to him as “he” for now) was kept in an enclosure with a bunch of others in a house where you could smell the cigarettes from the driveway with your windows all the way up, the smell only got worse when they opened the door. he was given to me in a plastic shoebox, and when i opened the box in my living room, the smell of cigarettes smelled the entire room. just from opening the box. this guy is apparently several months old, showing possible MBD, and has only eaten zoomed crested gecko diet. hoping he enjoys his life better here!

Live plants high up advice?

I spent ages picking plants and planning this tank before bringing Cookie home, I oped for some Satin Pothos and Lipstick Plants for my upper foliage, however they just keep dying! The Pothos has half survived but its a slower grower, my Lipstick was going to drape everywhere while I waited but within 3 months its finally bailed on life. The issue is that the roots dry out way too fast under the DHP and Jungle LED, or, they got root rot as the sphagnum wouldn't let it breath... the wall draped one almost died until I removed some excess sphagnum now its doing great, so I did that elsewhere but it didnt help those guys.

I have some ledges and dips in the walls and a gap i can wedge a root ball between logs at the top... but wanted to see if anyone had some advice.. or is it purely to lower the roots and make it climb up instead? I'd have to invest in a larger plant if so, hence asking first!

Also, she always sleeps upside down on the glass next to the govee sensor.. must be cosy.

Any suggestions for replacing the plants at the top? Photo shows it now after removing the dead ones. They used to sit above the hide where the sticks meet and then drape around, and also the shelf above the right side brom and drape across. You can see 1 pothos surviving but its small and that extra 2 inches lower in a large pocket of orchid bark and moss.

Small mite looking bug in my crested gecko tank.

Upvotes

I am looking for any help, I want to know if these are bad, and where they came from!

I noticed these small white bugs in my crested geckos food (day after I had fed him). The only bugs that I have put in this tank are springtails, I fed him crickets last week, and dubia roaches yesterday.

When will my crestie start eating?

Upvotes

I got Freddy two days ago and i received him in a very very small box which he’s been in for almost 24 hours (pissed me off), and with his new home and all i get that he’s stressing right now.
I gave him his smoothie last night just to try if he’d eat it and couldn’t tell if he ate anything. No poops so far. He’s settling pretty nicely tho so far he’s been out of his hiding spot a lot i’m just stressing about if he eats or no. He should start eating at around this time right? Should i just wait?

Low stand or cabinet recomendations

Upvotes

We are upgrading to a 45x45x90 cm terrarium, and have been looking at stand ideas. The space we have to put it in has a max height of 163cm as it needs to go under a shelf, and most stands i have found as too tall. Does anyone use lower than average stands or cabinets? We are UK based.

Help first crested gecko

Upvotes

I getting my first crested gecko I did a lot of research but one thing I can’t find is substrate what should I use and how often should I clean it? Also he won’t be using it till he’s bigger but I don’t plan on ever doing a bioactive enclosure. Is reptisoil okay?

Tessie found a dubia once

Upvotes

She found a roach in her hidey ONE time, and now she stares at her hidey, multiple times a night, apparently just waiting for one to suddenly appear.

I love her and her single brain cell.

Tessie is my first CG. I’ve had rankins before and loooved. I was hoping she’d be a little more social when I first got her a year ago. Since then, I’ve backed off on trying to handle because neither of us were enjoying the experience. I’ll still feed her Pangea from a spoon so we bond over that.

I was feeling a little bummed recently that I’ve built such a lovely life for her and never get to see her use it… so I got a night vision camera and I’m OBSESSED. Fr, I went from feeling disenfranchised to staring at every 10 second clip of her tail moving, and subsequently squealing.

Does he look healthy?

I got him in march and I believe him to be somewhere between 6-8 months old, he weights 10-11 grams depending on the day, I left him with my brother over the summer for abt 3 months and he did a wonderful job but wanted to get the opinion of people who know a little bit more about these guys than I do!
