I made a short guide for girls thinking about taking off hijab

Hey all. I’ve been an ex-Hijabi for about 7 years now and the frequent posts I see on this sub of girls wanting to take it off pain me because I know on such a deep level what many of you are going through. I have been reflecting on my experience and I put this visual guide together in case it may be helpful. If this is you’re experience, I hope you feel less alone being apart of this space, and I hope this can help in any way while you think through your decision. It is not easy, but you will get through it. Sending you all love ❤️

Social & Relationship Advice Warning: Links & Suspicious Activity

Upvotes

It has come to our attention that certain individuals, previously members of the Xsom Discord server, have been banned due to repeated harassment, doxxing attempts, stalking across multiple accounts, leaking personal images, and other harmful behavior.

These individuals are now using fake accounts to reach out to Reddit users, by creating posts about their server & sending unsolicited links to their own Discord server in an attempt to bypass their ban. These servers are not safe, and the owners have a history of violating people’s privacy.

What You Need to Know.

Think critically before engaging with strangers online. We cannot protect everyone, and at the end of the day, users must take responsibility for their own safety.

To mitigate risk, we are temporarily banning all social links on this subreddit. Any social media links or posts made promoting servers/groups, outside of official posts that have been approved by a Moderator or sent via private messages will be ignored and removed.

If you encounter users promoting these suspicious servers or sending unsolicited links, report them immediately so we can ensure this subreddit remains a safe space.

Somalis who preemptively disown Somalis are so weird…especially for harmless vids/content.

Upvotes

I notice they always do it to non-conforming Somalis. Religion is not relevant most cases. Most of the time it impacts creators who got nothing to say about religion. But it also impacts openly ex-muslims.

Either way, it’s always the baddies and hotties they are tryna disown!!

It’s weird as FUCK they try to assign foreign ethnicities when a Somali acts too different.

Any time they hating they try to claim the person is a different nationality. Ceeb.

What’s bothersome is that they genuinely think it makes their image look better. Whole time the people they’re tryna disown boost their PR LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOO

Rant - I don’t feel regret that I missed out on my teenage years because it wasn’t up to me

Upvotes

I can genuinely sit here and list 100 things I haven’t done yet that other people my age did years ago.

I’ve never swam in the ocean, I don’t know how to ride a bike, I’ve never been on holiday (I’m not counting Mogadishu or Eastleigh as a holiday ☠️), I’ve never been away from my family for more than a day, I’ve never snuck out, experienced love, travelled alone, been to a concert, smoked, vaped, or drunk.

Like, I’ve basically done nothing.

But I don’t feel this sense of despair that I’m so behind compared to everyone else or that I’ve missed out on all these milestones in life.

And I think it’s because I’ve never really had the choice. It wasn’t up to me that I didn’t experience those milestones.

I think I’d feel like I wasted my teenage years if I had kuff parents who gave me the freedom to do whatever I wanted, and I still didn’t do any of the above. Then I’d feel like I wasted my teenage years.

But yeah, I’m so excited for my 20s and experiencing all the firsts I didn’t get to experience as a teenager because now I actually have the choice, and it is up to me now

UPDATE: AXsomali dating app Beta Waitlist is Live! 🎉

Upvotes

Hey everyone, thank you for all the support on the last post.

I’ve spent the past 45 hours building out the foundation for the dating app (Sahan Circle). Safety, privacy, and making sure this is a welcoming space for everyone in our community are the main priorities right now.

To keep things secure and screen out bad actors, access is strictly invite-only for now. You can check out our community and safety rules on the site before putting your name down.

Manual vetting is the safest way to start. If enough people sign up and show demand, I'll deploy the full system later.

Take a look, read through the safety rules, and drop your email if you want to join. Feedback is always welcome!

Social & Relationship Advice Friends !!

Upvotes

Hey guys, long story short I’m really hoping to connect with more Somali friends. I’ve tried being friends with whites, but I’ve ended a few friendships because of microaggressions, and I’m looking for people I relate to more.
I’d really love to meet more Somali girls and build genuine connections. I’ve tried before but it hasn’t always clicked, sometimes I feel like Somali girls can come off a bit mean, but I’m still open and hopeful.
A bit about me, I’m 21F, live in Copenhagen and study nursing. I love being spontaneous, traveling and just doing fun, sometimes slightly chaotic things.
Feel free to DM me!

Why couldn’t we be free?

Upvotes

I’ve always been so angry at this world for ripping away our beautiful home. With our beautiful culture. Why is our country just filled with conflict and such an extreme version of Islam that the colonisers don’t even follow themselves, but we do for some odd reason. We torture ourselves with it and pass it on to the kids. What a horrible fate we have given ourselves.
Why wasn’t I given a land I belong, where I was born in my motherland, grew up in my motherland, be able to wear my hair out, wear whatever clothes I want. Be able to live freely in a country where my ancestors were born and where I plan to continue staying because this land is free and this land belongs to us. We are not Muslim or any religion, we are free.
But instead I live in a world where we have turned to eachother in hate, conflict fuelled by centuries of past colonialism by multiple countries who wanted a piece of us and drain us dry.
Where a civil war broke out because of this inability to be peaceful causing an influx of refugees and immigrants flying to the diaspora. Where I was born in the west. A land that fed me, and grew me, but it is also the land that stole mine. It is the land that caused this hatred and war. But it is also a land where I can live a freer life than in my own home. What a cruel fate that is to live with. To sacrifice my ability to relate to my own family becuase I don’t know the language fluently, to not have had the opportunity to grow up with my cousins and see my uncles and aunties, but hey at least I have a better future than the alternate me, who stayed.

Social & Relationship Advice Confused and seeking marriage NSFW

Upvotes

Hello everyone, I’m a 22-year-old Somali man in the US, and I truly need advice. Please bear with me, I’ll rush through some parts since it’s way too long to tell. Sorry in advance. I’ve never told a soul any of this except one guy mentioned below, and I planned on only telling my wife, so I might skip through a bunch.
I grew up with very strict parents who I believe truly misunderstood me. I spent half my childhood raising their kids, but I’m still seen as the bad guy. I have older siblings who are basically either bums or not family-oriented when it comes to being a sibling or a son or daughter.
I was raped and sexually assaulted by one of them from about age 7 to 12. I couldn’t tell my parents, since most of whatever was said about me was either a lie or something I’d get hit for. My parents once found porn on my phone, and I tried to seek help by saying my older brother taught me, but they didn’t believe me. He made something up and they believed him instead, and took my phone privileges away for good. I took that as my one call for help, realized it would only get me in trouble, and kept my mouth shut after that.
As a kid, teachers recommended I get tested for ADHD. When the doctor mentioned medication, my parents refused, which I’m thankful for, but it led to other issues, like struggling to memorize the Quran. After hours of failing to memorize my daily portion for Saturday lessons, I’d be sent to my brother to see if he knew it, and if not, I’d get hit by my dad. After enough beatings, I became genuinely terrified. My brother started saying that if he told them I passed, I’d owe him. I never knew what that meant at first. Then one night, we shared a room, he put on porn and said I had to suck his dick since I owed him. It gradually turned into full sex, though usually just oral. It got to where I would even initiate it myself, asking if I could do it before my dad came so I could go to the park, and my brother would tell him I’d passed.
At 14, I was told I could go to Kenya without the family and stay there a couple of years if I wanted, and I immediately jumped on it. By then I was very hypersexual, masturbating multiple times a day and having sex with the girl I was dating that year, trying to manage my urges while also facing an identity crisis, believing I’d go to hell for a man having sex with me and me allowing it.
I landed in Kenya and was sent to an all-boys school. For the first time, I experienced a man, not a woman, coming on to me. At first I wanted to fight him. I was straight in my head at the time. We were in the same class, both in relationships with girls, which I found odd. I have an overactive mind, and I started wondering what it would be like to sleep with him, so I did. We were each other’s first guy other than our assaulters (he told me about his after we’d been together). We ended up helping each other deal with the guilt of our pasts and control our urges while trying to stay close to our faith.
I left after two years and came back to a family in chaos, my parents on bad terms, my older brother getting into trouble, everything in turmoil. I went straight back to raising the kids and kept my promise to them that someone would look out only for their interests and happiness. But with the stress of two jobs to pay for college plus family issues, I started smoking weed. I found out that even though I barely get high from it, it sharpens my focus. I’d write three-page essays and knock out a week’s worth of assignments after just a hit or two. It worked almost like ADHD medication for me. Getting medicated wasn’t an option anyway, since I couldn’t join the Air Force if I’d been prescribed ADHD medication within the past two years.
Fast forward to now, I’m 22. For the past three to four years I’ve slept with a number of men, always protected and only with partners who were tested. With women, I tried to abstain unless I was in a relationship, and getting into a relationship with me is hard, since unless it’s marriage, I don’t really do relationships. I know that sounds backward given that I’ve been sleeping around, but wallahi, I never wanted to disrespect a woman. I knew if it wasn’t marriage or something we were both seriously working toward, it would just turn into sleeping together a few times and then leaving, which I didn’t want, since it would hurt my reputation and hers too.
Two weeks ago, I got retested for STDs and STIs and tested positive for HSV-2, herpes. I feel like my whole life is over. The doctor says I can be with someone long-term without transmitting it if I’m careful and not in an active outbreak, but that doesn’t make it any easier to explain to a Somali girl. I always dreamed of getting married and having kids, and I’ve spent the last three years overworking myself with two full-time jobs and school full-time to get ahead in my career. Now that I’m finally ready to buy a house and get married, this happens. It feels like Allah is testing me again. I believe this is a consequence of committing zina, and I accept that.
I have a good reputation for how I treat women and for my character, and because of that I keep ending up in tricky situations. Last week I met a girl through a close friend of nine years at a pickleball court. We hit it off, great energy, and we all made plans to see a movie the next day. Somehow it went from five people to just the two of us that night, and she kept trying to make a move, which I avoided, and I’m glad I did, since I took my test the next day. Part of why I held back was that she’s close with that friend group, and I hate third-party involvement in a relationship. I also know that if things start out sexual for me, my mind won’t get out of that mode, and she seemed genuinely sweet, so I told myself, respectfully, to leave her alone.
She called me a few days later and said she’d talked to my friend, who mentioned I might be in a relationship, so she called to check why I was out with her and said I should be ashamed. I explained I wasn’t in a relationship, my friends only assume I am because they sometimes see me dressed up for a date. I’m very private and don’t like exposing my personal life. I feel like any relationship should stay between me, them, and Allah.
She accepted my explanation, and I’m a little crazy for this, that’s when I started to genuinely like her, for checking me instead of assuming things. Now I could actually see myself with her, and then I get this diagnosis.
Now I need advice on what to tell her, or any woman I meet, about my diagnosis, and how to move forward from here. Also, if there’s any woman around my age looking to get married, feel free to reach out.

Ps. Looking for a woman that does not care for my past and that wants a deep connection in their marriage, I’ve saved and planned to do lots with my wife,( have a list of things I made sure never to do or tell people so I can do it only wife my wife), I do sin a lot but I am religious, she also gotta want to change a lot about the family dynamic and issues in Somali households. As for anyone who wants more to the story or full parts u got to unlock wife membership😭btw yes I use cluade to clean this up and this is not ai story actually living this

Pan Africanist and Reactionaries

Upvotes

I'm annoyed by how people are dragging that term through the mud, just like they did to feminism, socialism, and other political/economic terms—all because we got our feelings hurt as Somalis. Stop being reactionary to algorithmically driven rage bait, like when misogynists see women doing stupid things and blame feminism. Most of you haven't read anything related to Pan-Africanism, but if you see the stupid diaspora wars, you'll run here and say, "Hurr durr, that's why Pan-Africanism would never work."

By the way, I hope for people's sake that they haven't gotten their understanding of Pan-Africanism from Dr. Umar and actually know of Kwame Nkrumah. People in this sub think they're too intellectual to fall for insidious indoctrination, since they figured out that we've been subject to indoctrination and brainwashing by religion—but they're too arrogant or ignorant of the brainwashing of the Western world.

I want to write more but then I would have to explain about nationalism, the made up borders in Africa and how it is creating unnatural competitions and sabotage(looking at you Djibouti who are sending people to stop Zeila port from developing and are straight up killing people just to protect the revenue stream from Ethiopia) and capitalism.

29F here, any other Somali woman in Washington State?

Upvotes

Any Somali women in Washington?

I’m 29F and feel like I stopped meeting other Somali women after university. Most of the Somali people I knew were through school, and it’s been surprisingly hard to meet other somali people I could relate to since graduating.

Would be nice to meet some other Somali women in WA, especially other ex-Muslim/agnostic women. I’m in the Seattle area. Feel free to DM me if you’d like to connect.

No more Free Palestine

Upvotes

Palestinians are anti-black, the black neighborhood in Gaza is called al-abeed (the slaves).
Yesterday Rula Jebreal called Hakeem Jeffries a monkey and all Arabs and most white leftists defended her and doubled down on calling him a “monkey” and an “errand boy”.

Islam=/Palestine!

Still fuck Israel. But we have to find a way to tackle this issue, maybe we should focus more on Sudan who is also a Muslim country, and congo too?. I don’t but you can’t support people calling you monkeys and dehumanizing you.

I posted this in r/Somalia and cucks there deleted it.

Question Would anyone like to be my Japanese study buddy?

Upvotes

I think it would motivate me more if someone genuinely wants to learn the language as well. I’m currently around JLPT N5, so I’m still a beginner. We could set weekly goals, do regular check-ins, share resources, study sessions together (can keep camera off), and keep each other accountable. We can also do voice chats in Japanese for speaking practice and slowly get more comfortable actually using the language.

My personal goal is definitely to improve my speaking and eventually be able to have actual conversations with native Japanese speakers, mostly because I think it would be fun. Of course, I’d also like to properly learn the Japanese writing system along the way.

My native languages are English and Dutch, and I’m mainly looking for someone around beginner ish, but I don’t mind if you’re somewhere else as long as you’re genuinely interested in learning and staying consistent.

My IRL friend is also studying Japanese, but she’s more of a self-studying type of person, so she’s not really a consistent study buddy for me.

If you’re interested, DMs are open, and hopefully we can arrange something

Discussion I went to A and E last night and saw a young Somali woman wearing a mini skirt and it made me so happy

Upvotes

She was with her mother and her mother and I had a few brief interactions. I told her the hospitals in Hargeysa are better than the A and E at this point! It made me happy because it is a rare sight in London. Interestingly, her mother, who looked middle aged , was also wearing trousers and a masar. Again, this is a rare sight in London. In the words of Mama Malyuun, “tuura tuura tuura” . I think that is what she says lol. Somali women where I am from walk around looking invisible with those ugly ass tents. We have had extreme heat this summer and it is so heartbreaking and infuriating to see Muslim women in general walking around in jackets and just covered while everyone else, including the men, is wearing weather-appropriate clothing.

Venting Update 2: Gay exmuslim somali remains lost

Upvotes

~1 year update from my post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/XSomalian/s/XCLAiaK9Y6

Was reflecting on my post last year and wanted to provide a quick update /reflect on my situation. Long story short a bit disappointing/ sobering but ive remained at home and not moved out. Thought this might be a useful case study to someone in a similar context - hopefully can learn something from my mistakes.

Firstly, I find myself in an interesting position where I work extremely hard (think >14 hr work days in law/ finance/consulting type job) so im rarely at home whilst I continue quietly saving & investing. The fact that I dont pay rent in a HCOL city has been extremely beneficial.

Economically its been great but on the flip side I find myself feeling notably detached/ empty (but i stress I feel A LOT better vs my more formative years). This is pretty bad but ive noticed ive developed bad coping mechanisms including working more and frequently hooking up with guys (i get tested regularly locally, stay away from any drugs and keep myself safe). It's also been hard to make new friends too as ive become very avoidant to the point where Im on my own most weekends shopping, eating out myself etc although I dont feel lonely.

Bottom line im doing fine optically but im developing some bad behaviours- i need therapy maybe. Also no real urgency to move out, funnily enough trying to gain financial independence under a fear of being kicked out if my parents found out ive been gay has taught me the importance of true financial security - im building wealth to prepare for anything at all now. Can't remember the last time ive prayed too lol im truly a gaal hehe

I have ADHD. I am convinced my mother’s special interest is the religion which is great for me as an ex Muslim lmao. She once told me that someone who leaves the deen is like someone who has died at a time when I was really going through it. Need I say more?! 😂😂😂😭

The “how yk I was Somali” comments on social media are so selective, and the pattern is hard to ignore

Upvotes

I’ve noticed that these comments aren’t really made just because someone is Somali. If a Somali person is considered attractive, you rarely see people making the “how did you know I was Somali?” type of comments. But when someone is perceived as unattractive or has features people consider undesirable, suddenly their Somali identity becomes part of the joke.

Personally, I don’t understand what is supposed to be funny about it. At that point, it isn’t simply recognizing someone’s ethnicity. It’s using their ethnicity alongside negative judgments about their appearance, which reinforces the idea that being Somali is somehow associated with being unattractive.

You don’t see this type of comment under other ethnicities, no matter how unattractive or unusual their features are. I genuinely don’t understand why ethnicity is suddenly so relevant here, or why so many people are obsessed with stereotyping Somalis. The constant need to associate being Somali with ugliness and then convince us and everyone else that we’re all ugly is honestly so weird.

Being Somali shouldn’t be treated as something strange, alien, or noteworthy that needs to be pointed out whenever someone has features people dislike. These comments turn an entire ethnicity into a stereotype and a punchline instead of treating people as individuals.

And what makes this especially frustrating is how common these comments are and how many likes they receive. Social media is actively rewarding these stereotypes, which makes the behavior seem normal when it really is just another form of othering and racism.

the only way to really convince somalis to stop putting religion above everything, is communism

Upvotes

People often times say shi like «why dont the women in blantly patriarchal countries, revolt?» But the same time its hard to preach feminism when western powers use that same reason aswell. Marxist feminist talk about this heavily.

Better days

Upvotes

Hi everyone hope you all are enjoying your weekend. I want to say no matter where you are on your journey of making sense of everything keep going it does get easier. One advice I will give is take your time you don't have to figure it all out quickly. Leaving religion is a big thing and can be very traumatic it can take you a long time to truly get back to yourself be easy on yourself. Islam is truly a wicked religion the choice you made to leave it will bear fruits each day be patient. It may be difficult in the short term but it will be a great benediction to you as the days go forth.

Upon dropping your faith and religion it is natural to scurry to look for something to replace it be wary of this as you are very vulnerable depending on where you are and what type of person you are. Rather than trying to figure out the world I would focus on making sure you are ok instead of going into different philosophies there will always be time for that.

My greatest advice is take your time and it's ok to not be certain of something as certain as the claims of false religions. It's ok to not know everything. You are human first live your life create meaning find something that matters to you and do it.

I Told My Parent's I Wasn't Muslim and 48 Hours Later Nothing Changed

Upvotes

I've haven't really believed in the religion since I was 16/17 and now I'm 23. I couldn't take it anymore and finally decided to tell my parents and just get it out of my chest. I expected a lot of crying, anger, arguments and then maybe my parent's would kick me out of the house and I could live freely as a non Muslim women and over the years we could mend our relationship.

What I didn't expect when I told them is for my mother to become physically and mentally ill. These two days she has been sick in bed in anguish and has refused any food or doctors. She said she was experiencing extreme chest pains. At some point I was worried she would get a heart attack. Every time she saw me she starts crying. She couldn't get anything done or even take care of my siblings.

My dad spent the next two days arguing back and forth. We couldn't see eye to eye. He didn't want me to move out he just wanted me to be Muslim again. He said it was the only way to make my mom better. I tried to compromise with him and asked if I could at least not wear the hijab anymore or move out but it was to no avail. I know I'm an adult and I could just leave but I couldn't leave my mom in that condition and if I left there would be no one to take care of my younger siblings. So I gave up and pretended to go back to the religion. When my dad and I told my mom its like something come over her and she went back to normal. She could speak normally, she took care of my siblings and everything.

I'm really happy she's okay now and that my family loves me and everything but I don't know what to do. These past few years have driven me to my breaking point and the only relief I had is that one day I might hope to live freely as a non muslim and not wear that hijab anymore. But now that dream seems impossible without physically and mentally hurting my mom. Does anyone have any advice for me? What Can I Possibly Do????????

If one believes in eternal hell. Why would you have children ? Knowing for a fact there is basically a 50 50 chance of eternal hell or heaven seems like a pretty big gamble to take when you could not have children and avoid the possibility of your child going to hell for eternity.

How many Muslims have stopped and asked themselves if it's worth reproducing knowing there is a 50 percent chance their offspring may suffer Eternally. There is no logic in that.

You see if your an ex Muslims you now don't believe in eternal hell and can have children if you want without the gamble of your child going to eternal damnation as you do not subscribe to those views.
