Let me take you back to 1985 with the time machine

Let me take you back to 1985 with the time machine

The idea of Emiratis working in public jobs was very rare. All of us used to get generous welfare benefits from the government our country was much more wealthy and here in Abu Dhabi all the police, nurses, municipality workers, were Somalis.

There was no such thing as a Western Expats desperately searching for jobs or desperately trying to sell your apartments. All western Expats had full package when they landed in the airport, free villas, free car, free tickets home and a big salary. You also had a relative small Western population here most were highly educated Brits.

The country was way more conservative and religious back then. Money had value and they were jobs everywhere.

Why when I'm in Dubai I can't sleep?

Upvotes

European here. I stay in Dubai for few months every year. My issue is that every time I come back here, the first 1-2 weeks I can go to sleep and feel tired at night normally. Then my sleeping schedule gets screwed over for no reason.

I didn't sleep last night at all. It only happens when I'm in Dubai but not in other countries. Could it be air quality related or is it something else? Thinking of getting prescribed some sleeping pills

3rd year architecture student looking for internship advice in the UAE

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m a 3rd-year architecture student in the UAE, and I’m hoping to do an internship by next summer.
There are a few companies I’d really like to work for, such as Aldar, Modon, and Ohana Development. I know they’re large real estate/development companies, so I’m not sure how realistic it is to get an internship with them, but I’d really appreciate any advice from people who have worked there or know how their internship hiring works.
I already know AutoCAD and I’m currently learning Revit. Would I need a portfolio when applying to these types of companies? If so, what would you recommend including in it as an architecture student?
Any advice on where/how to apply, when to start applying, what skills I should focus on, or how to make my application stand out would be really helpful!
Thank you!

Tourist visa requirements as an Iraqi solo 22 female !

Upvotes

Hiii ! I want to know was the flight informations required ? Like I just wanna provide my accommodations and that’s all, I am planning to buy flight tickets later after my visa gets approved or not, cuz I am an Iraqi passport holder and that’s why ! Also I just want to know the only requirements for the visa appplication explicitly, no additional “you may need to do after visa gets approved” just explicitly the visa requirements ?

Also does the UAE visa ever take too much time to come with a rejection or approval ?

Bank says no non-resident virtual gold accounts - gotta sell or transfer before I move abroad. Anyone dealt with this?

Upvotes

Moving out of UAE in a couple months. Got a gold investment account here and called the bank - they said no non-resident option, I either sell now or transfer it within the bank.

Annoying timing since gold's down right now and I don't want to lock in a loss.

Anyone been through this? How did you manage your bank accounts migration or closures?

Thanks in advance!

Recently joined my dad’s oil & gas supply business in Dubai — looking for advice

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently moved to Dubai and joined my dad’s business, which has been operating in the UAE and Qatar for a number of years.

We’re mainly a trading/supply company for the oil & gas, construction and industrial sectors. We supply industrial consumables, safety/PPE products, welding materials and other equipment/materials based on client requirements. The business is purely trading – we source and supply rather than manufacture.

We already have established customers in Qatar, including contractors in the oil & gas space, but our Dubai/UAE business has a lot of room to grow, and that’s what I’m now trying to focus on.

I’m fairly new to B2B business development in the UAE, so I’d love some advice from people who have actually worked in procurement, EPC, oil & gas, MEP, facilities management or industrial trading here

.

How do suppliers realistically get their foot in the door with companies in Dubai/UAE?

Is it mainly vendor registrations and tender portals, or is it more about directly building relationships with procurement managers/buyers? Are cold calls, emails and site/office visits still effective here? And which types of contractors or industries would you recommend approaching first for a smaller established supplier trying to grow?

I’m not looking for shortcuts, just trying to understand how this industry actually works in the UAE and where I should be spending my time.

Would really appreciate any advice or even connections from people in the industry. Happy to connect privately as well.

Thanks!

I think loneliness finally caught up with me

Upvotes

I don’t really know why I’m posting this. I was just sitting here tonight, thinking about life, and something hit me.

It’s been almost 8 years in dubai of just… doing life on my own.

I worked. I earned. I saved. I learned. I kept myself busy. A lot happened, and somehow I kept moving forward.

But after all these years, I realized something that genuinely hurts:

I don’t really have anyone to rely on.

I’ve been single my entire life. For a long time, I thought I was completely fine with it. Maybe because I was always busy, maybe because I’m extremely introverted and shy. I’ve never really had the courage to approach someone or tell someone I like them.

But lately, the loneliness feels different.

It’s not just “being alone” anymore. It feels like this emptiness coming from somewhere inside me. When everything gets quiet, my brain just keeps thinking and thinking.

The weird part is, even when I’m having a good day, I find myself listening to sad songs. 😂 Like bro, nothing even happened today… why are we heartbroken?

And now I’m in my 20s wondering if I somehow left it too late. Everyone seems to know how dating and relationships work, while I feel like I missed the tutorial completely.

At some point, I also noticed that I stopped looking for happiness for myself. Instead, I started finding it in other people.

Seeing someone excited about something. Seeing couples laughing together. Seeing friends having a good time. Making someone else smile.

Somehow their happiness makes me happy, even if I go home feeling empty afterward.

I don’t know what I’m expecting from posting this. Maybe nothing.

Maybe I just needed to say it somewhere.

And maybe someone reading this tonight is struggling with the same kind of loneliness while pretending everything is perfectly fine.

If you are, I guess there are at least two of us. :)

Breaking into hedge funds and trading firms in Dubai as an infrastructure engineer

Upvotes

I'm looking to get a role within the financial industry as a low-level systems engineer building data pipelines, execution algorithms, order gateways for trading firms in Dubai. I already live here on my own, and I'm not in need of a job necessarily and want to break into the industry rather out of interest and grow.

As for my past experience, I worked as a software engineer since late 2021 mostly in Rust, but building peer-to-peer crypto architecture, a casino game engine, dental infrastructure for dentists in Europe, scraping infrastructure, and not anything finance-related professionaly.

Personally I've been trading for a while, I'm mostly familiar with SPX, SPY, QQQ, VIX options and I'm up 21.5% YTD with a max draw down of 10% and I'm building a platform to handle my PMCC legs and account my short legs.

If anyone here knows which companies I should target, I'd greatly appreciate it. Happy to talk more, but not comfortable dropping my email or Linkedin here due to fear of some solicitation, already dealing with a scam from du now.

Custom Bedframes (hard wood)

Upvotes

Any custom bedframe makers who use natural hard wood (eg Meranti, Acacia, Teak, Oak, Walnut, or even white wood) who can also deliver within 30 days?

Most of the workshops we spoke to make custom beds abroad so their operations have been disrupted by the war. Part of the challenge is we're trying to do a 180 x 220 (WxD) size.
