It adds up

Got any 55 lbs of brass and need to know how to tell the difference? I called the yard and they do red and yellow pricing, so how do they know at the yard witch is witch? I got a bunch of old valves and I'm sure they red brass then some of the bright yellow looking stuff I'm sure is yellow brass. Most of the brass I got are plumbing related if that helps. I got them separated to what I think is red and yellow brass, but how will they know at the yard? They ones I put in the yellow brass bucket seemed to be lighter in weight. I got some pex b brass fittings, would they be red or yellow brass?

I also got some stuff that looks brass, doesn't stick to magnet, but when I file it down, it is silver or white. Would these not be brass but aluminum? Just going by weight it seems heavier than aluminum. Some of these are a door knob and it's guts. Some of it files down to yellow, while some is white or silver.

And then I got a bunch of chrome plated brass plumbing fixtures, like the brass ferrel ring and then the chrome coated nut, and the chrome supply valves. Also got a bunch of flush valves among some other chrome stuff, but they all are yellow when I file it down. What would this chrome stuff be considered as, dirty brass and if so would it be dirty red brass or dirty yellow brass?

Is this worth the effort to tear apart? If so any tips on easiest way to disassemble.

For context, I have never scrapped anything but when I was asked to lug the 150lb or so motor stator to the curb I figured i'd try my hand at it. I appreciate any insight!

The windings are #4 solid but are wrapped in fabric insulation. There are 4 sections (I've removed the windings from 2 so far.

Couple questions:

So far to remove the insulation, I just soaked the wire in water overnight to cut down on the dust. Once its wet I can just run the shaft of a screwdriver down it and it falls off. Is there some faster way? Is it even necessary to remove?

The housing is steel. Is it worth scrapping? Would most Scrapyard's accept this type of thing?

Does anyone have an extra wire stipper in moco? Im stripping some cooper for groceries and dont have the money to spend 60 dollars on one of these. I have s spool of copper thats maybe a few hundred feet and have been trying tonstrip it with a utility knife...not going well at all.

Just started getting into this. I mainly keep copper and brass but charged the lady $100 to haul it off and took it to the scrap yard and got $60

Recently got this from a job where company went under. I was paid with cash and a shipping container full of equipment. I have zero electrical experience so don’t know what to research to get prices or what I should scrap/sell. Any tips?

Been accumulating for a while and taking a quiet Saturday to go through some of it. Bit of no.1, some heavy which I'll use for metal casting, same with the brass.

Not particularly a fan of stripping breakers but it hurts to leave them.

The thiner ones are harder to break down and the pile of copper colour bits are just copper coated steel and the inevitable box of crap that'll go in the bin

I have numerous pieces of brass that have heavy cotton on them. Will I have to separate them from my clean bras

As in seriously – not sarcastically. I was driving to pick up my daughter from school and saw this aluminum wheel at the curb next to a garbage can out for collection. I saw it out of the corner of my eye as I passed, so on my way back I reminded myself to keep an eye out for it if it was still there. It was, so I stopped, grabbed it, threw it in the back, and as I was getting ready to turn my hazards off and merge back onto the road an angry looking dude with a truck bed full of scrap drove by offering a California Howdy-I’m sure at some point I’ll be 30 seconds behind somebody else snagging scrap. It is what it is.

I went to a new scrapyard in my town, they weighed my stuff like normal and were very nice. When we got to the part where we usually show ID, they said that’s not necessary. I live in a state where photo ID is required. Does anyone know how they are able to do this?

I'm sure this has been done, but I recently had the epiphany that I could simply ask a company for their scrap. I know a couple of companies that have recently been working in my area and 4 trips of dumpster diving later I cashed out over $2K. I feel that they have made a clear statement that they do not have any interest in recuperating money through scrap given the current prices (I'm at $5/lb for #1).

The hurdle is how to approach them and what do I offer? In my limited experience I can't fathom a business is going to give me a list of their next 3 projects and tell me to have at it. I thought about building a few collection bins (4' x 5' or 6' x 4') with fork pockets that I could place there. I suppose they could always say that they pair with local recyclers as part of advertising. I'm just trying to find an angle if there is one to be found at all?

If anyone has advice or success stories they want to share, they will be much appreciated!

Pulled this out of a fuse looking for silver. Looks like copper but the slag looks silvery like solder.

Come into quite a lot of shower units with my job obv the pipes and stuffs anyone had any experience with the actual units are they more hassle than theyre worth?

I've seen videos and images of the dismantling of old locomotives at the end of the line whether steam or diesel or even electric. I was wondering whether any of y'all worked in the scrapyards scrapping old locomotives and if any of y'all did how was it like to be the one dismantling the train?

I’d love to know how you got into this business and where you learned about it.

Is it a generational business for you, or did you start it on your own? What has the journey been like so far?

Also, do you think it’s worth getting into this business if someone is willing to put in the time to gain sufficient knowledge and understand the industry properly?
