Jacob Ramsey on training in the No. 10 position: "In training, I've been playing as the 10." "I thought I trained really well this week. I came on a bit deeper but I think I'm comfortable on the ball deeper or in the 10. At Villa I played the left-10 position

Leeds (A)

Upvotes

Appreciate this might be a bit of a long shot but in a turn of events I’ll be travelling to Leeds for work on Monday afternoon. I was wondering if anyone knew of any away tickets going or could keep me in mind if they hear of any.

Failing that, any pub recommendations in the city centre where I might not be the only Geordie watching?

Ta!

Regarding Miley yesterday

Upvotes

Saw quite a few comments regarding Miley's performance yesterday. He _was_ fucking terrible, granted, and Scott completely bossed the midfield in the first half.

Just wanted to add some context and point out that at Miley's age, Alex Scott was playing for Bristol in the Championship.

He's also being asked to operate on the left side of the pitch this season rather than predominantly right side last season (due in part to some appearances at right back of course).

We've got a potential world beater on our hands, but he's playing in a completely new system surrounded by players he's been with for a month or so. No player is immune to criticism obviously but I think it's important to keep this context in mind.

There really aren't very many 19-21 year olds in the Premier league starting in centre mid and he's going to have shit games every now and then. Mainoo is a year older and can't get consistent playing time. Bergvall's the same age and isn't really playing either. Archie Gray has been poor. I think it's totally fair to say Miley has been better than all of them so far this season.

Aussie Mags

Big thanks to Aussie Mags in Cheers Bar, Sydney last night. A fabulous mix of people and an amazing atmosphere.

As a wandering Geordie used to watching the game solo at 4am it was great to spend an evening with my tribe. It was like back in the day in The Sov, Tynemouth watching with my pals. The bar doesn't exist now but the spirit lives on.

And big cheers to The Sills (it was on Gary's shirt) for making me feel like family 👋

The number 10 position.

Upvotes

I’m loving the freshness of the Jaissle tactics. I loved Eddie, but the time was right. He did run out of ideas, but that doesn’t take away his successes.

To me, Jaissle’s system seems to be more 442 than 4231.
The 6 moves into CB position, full backs tuck in with Miley, wingers for width and a 9 and a 10 switch between to keep a dynamic and keep defenders guessing.

This is what is different to Howe’s. He opted for a hybrid 8 system, but the issue with that is it’s too vulnerable to be experimental, a second of confusion and your defence is exposed. This is what happened time and again last season when our MF was tired.

So our line up is fairly clear, but what is a conundrum to me is this number 10 position. Who is the best player for this position? We need a guy that can read the game, press high, carry the ball and interplay, but also spot a gap and run in from a Nico ball.

The candidates:-

4.) Willock. All the attributes, but he’s more of a sub coming on with fresh legs. He’s too inconsistent for a start.

3.) Ramsey. While it is probably his best position, I think he’s more a static 10, or a 10 that swaps wide positions, not the 9.

2.) Wissa. Probably a better 10 than a 9. Destroyed Liverpool’s triple entente of attacking midfielders. Would like to see him against a decent, dedicated 6.

1.) Joelinton. Yes, he’s a midfielder now. But is he really, or was he a good player playing in a Howe system that needed a particular pressing/ physical presence?

I think Joelinton, injuries and pace permitting could be incredible. He’s can deploy the physical high press that won him the love under Howe, but he is adept at pushing up and occasionally gets goals from a through ball. He’s a little inconsistent but now and then I’ve seen him deploy a wonderful first touch.

Imagine him with a pacey 9, Osula or Pardo, with Elanga too bombing down the right. He’s not a playmaker type 10, not an Odegaard, and for certain games I think Wissa would be better. But for big games at SJP, seeing Joe unleash his physicality against defenders, opening gaps for pace, or crunching a fancy 6 to pieces. Fucking bring it on.

What do you think? Does he still have the form and fitness for this? Or should we still be thinking about that perfect 10 that complements the progression of our youthful side?

[Craig Hope] "Without the Newcastle head coach knowing, journalists stood nearby and watched Jaissle bench press a pair of 25kg dumbbells. ‘Is that all you can lift?’ I offered. A colleague asked if I could manage the same load. ‘Looking at you,’ Jaissle intervened, ‘I don’t think so.’"
