Discussion Discussion : Leveling Zones years after release become deadzones.. what a waste of resources

Upvotes

I am getting back into some MMOs I dipped into. Trying to level my old abandoned characters. The zones full of nice art and gameplay elements

Is nothing but a ghost town. A Deadzone. No life anywhere besides 1 or 2 players.

What an economical waste of development resources.

I tend to see this rapid deadzoning of leveling Zones start within a month of most modern MMO releases. People progress and move on to higher level Zones and content with little to no reason to come back besides holiday events or crafting stations.

So much wasted resources. These Zones only serve as gates for early players to level through and nothing much else.

Why are MMOs still being designed like this?

Please let me know what you think! While other MMOs often focus on leveling up, getting better gear. I wanted to talk about an MMO I grew up with called Puzzle Pirates that focuses on... well... puzzles and getting good at them! As well as some pretty advanced island governing systems.

Discussion Dev team behind Ascension WoW posts teaser trailer, wants "rough playable alpha" with hinted date of October 3

Upvotes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD_WICnJFLM

Is it a cash grab? It might be, idk. I'm just here posting the news. I'm also curious what they could possibly have ready. Reportedly they have been splitting development to this project for potentially a couple years, knowing that they'd get shut down eventually.

Also interesting (at least to me) is that they have never revealed the size of the dev team. I assume that has a lot to do with the legal concerns of working for a project like they were running. Some info would suggest that they've had between 30-50 active developers. That certainly tracks given the scope of the releases they were doing and the amount of money brought in, even if they were flipping Blizz assets. Based on a couple of AMAs and leaks it sounds like they've had a growing combination of salaried devs, contractors, and volunteers over the years.

Might end up being a final rug pull for some cash but I guess we're going to find out what they've been doing.

At least to me the saving grace of this team is that they know how to churn huge amounts of content and produce fun gameplay loops (obviously subjective, I know a lot of people don't like Ascension's take on WoW)

Self Promotion What if EVE Online was set in the Age of Sail and played in your browser?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Good evening folks,

I've been building Tidefall, a browser-based maritime MMO, and after a pretty substantial overhaul to the desktop UI I thought it was a good time to spread the word about the game. So, what are we actually trying to build?

Our ambition is to bring EVE Online into the Age of Sail through a persistent, real-time, top-down browser MMO that blends active play with meaningful idle progression. You begin as a lone captain with a single ship, then build towards a fleet and expand your influence across a handcrafted ocean world through gathering, trade, exploration, shipbuilding and naval combat.

Active and idle players share the same interconnected world and economy. One captain might mine ore while idle, while another actively hauls it across dangerous waters for profit, trades it between regions or turns it into ships and weapons. Each playstyle supports the other, whether you prefer focused sessions, passive progression or a mix of both.

As Tidefall grows, ships, cargo and equipment will carry increasingly meaningful value and risk. Certain waters will open to PvP, allowing captains to choose when to enter higher-stakes regions where vessels and cargo may be permanently lost. Preparation, logistics and every decision at sea will matter. Build a merchant empire, become a feared pirate, control key trade routes, dominate through guild warfare or simply explore a world that continues to expand around you.

Join us early and help shape what comes next.

Feedback requested

I'm particularly interested in feedback on a few things:

  • How does the new desktop UI feel? Is anything confusing, awkward or difficult to find?
  • Does the overall concept sound like a game you'd actually want to play?
  • And most importantly, is it fun? If something isn't clicking yet, what would you change or improve?

'ArcheAge S' is a new title led by XLGAMES Producer Kim Kyung-tae, who served as the first planning team lead and producer for the original 'ArcheAge'. While inheriting the core identity of the original game, it is being reinterpreted to fit modern gaming trends, with preparations underway for a Steam-centered service targeting a global release in Q2 2027.

Kakao Games plans to release a developer preview video in September. In the video, the development team will appear to explain their design philosophy and intent, as well as introduce core content and actual gameplay.

Opinion The Graveyard of Gods : An Autopsy of Digital Slaughter

In most online games, death is a mere inconvenience. You lose a sliver of experience, respawn at the nearest save point, and you dust yourself off. Try again. No true risk. In MagicDuel Adventure, a browser based sandbox running quietly since the mid 2000s, death was treated not as a gameplay loop but as a sentence. Conceived by an enigmatic creator known only as Muratus del Mur & the Demon of the East, the game was never designed to be easy. It was an alchemical laboratory designed to test human psychology, power dynamics, and emergent morality. Mur rarely policed his realm with interference of any sort. He believed in natural consequences. He still does. In his mind, if the world was cruel, the populace had to organize to fix it. And to test that thesis, he handed his players the first scalpels. The era of Kill Tools had begun.

Act 1 : Who Are You, When Nobody's Looking

It began with items like The Spade and Hangmans Noose. These were not the standard equipment meant for sparring at the Gazebo of Equilibrium. They were mechanically designed to strip a player of their ability to exist in the waking realm. True Kill Tools. An execution in MagicDuel did not simply send you back to a respawn node. It stripped you of your physical avatars body & banished your consciousness to the Lands of the Dead, back when they were still considered Necrovion territory. Death locked your soul into a state of vegetative paralysis. You couldnt travel far if at all, you couldn't participate in realm trade 90% of the time, and you were alone in that desolate graveyard, unless more unlucky souls came to join you in your misery. Revival wasn't an option unless you had connections or coin... & at one point, you didnt know if you wanted company or eternal solitude. To kill someone in MagicDuel wasn't just to win a disagreement... It was to completely strip them of who they were. Mur’s theoretical expectation was that such devastating power would inspire solemn contracts, sacred alliances, and a system of checks and balances. Instead, it gave a handful of power brokers the keys to an open air prison. A prison to which only they had the keys. The sole judge, jury, and executioners.

Act 2 : Entropy. My Oldest Friend

Every closed society needs a scapegoat. The realm’s self appointed aristocrats quickly identified their targets... the eccentrics, the heretics, and the few who refused to kneel to their political factions and pressure. What followed was a slow, methodical war of attrition. The strategy was chillingly simple... Perpetual execution through Villainous cooperation. The moment a targeted dissident managed to scrape together enough resources to resurrect (if they even could at all), a waiting executioner was payed off. The tool swung once again. One prominent parliah, an ostracized illusionist known across the land as Fang Archbane, was kept mechanically dead for literal years. You would log in, stare at the grey, lifeless walls of Necrovion & The Dead, realize your interface was completely locked, and have no recourse. There were no customer service tickets to submit. The game engine had allowed it, and the

Creator was watching from the shadows to see what would break first... the victim’s willpower, or the killers’ conscience. Neither ended up breaking. And so the realm broke instead.

Act 3 : The Shadows Writhe

The executioners made a fatal miscalculation common to all tyrants. They forgot that a dream needs dreamers. When the dissidents refused to quit and simply learned to exist as ghosts, the killers grew bored and paranoid. They turned their tools outward, striking at bystanders, sympathizers, and incoming novices who wandered into the wrong scene or asked the wrong philosophical question... commiting the cardinal sin of reminding them of one problematic thorn in their side that refused to bend the knee. The response from the broader player base was not an uprising. It was the only weapon an online populace has against tyranny... they closed the browser tab. A bustling realm of hundreds slowly bled into a ghost town. Hundreds became a handful. That handful dwindled into single digits. The majestic stone pavilions of Marind Bell, the sky open mountains of Golemus Golemicarum, and the quiet libraries of the Loreroot wood were reduced to hollow dioramas. The killers had won total, uncontested dominion over a near empty server. They had become the kings and queens of a dying world.

Act 4 : A Martyr Falls. The Phoenix Rises.

By the time the administration finally intervened... reworking the execution mechanics, stripping the unlimited lethality of the kill tools, and patching the loopholes... the damage was already carved into the stone. The perpetrators had spent years holding bloody blades over a world with almost nobody left inside it. Yet, a bizarre thing happened in the ruins. The players who survived in the shadows weren’t the heroes with noble speeches... they were the survivors who had made peace with the dark. The dark both inside and outside of themselves. The outcasts who had spent years buried alive crawled out of the dirt, adapted to the silence, and began the slow, quiet work of rebuilding the machine from the bottom up, after the villains grew tired of a world they had killed, and left it to rot. Today, MagicDuel still survives and grows. It is older, scarred, and largely forgotten by the modern gaming landscape, currently stirring back to life with new Evolutionary mechanics and a handful of stubborn veterans keeping the lamps lit at Gateway Island. The murder tools are blunt now. And they will be, as long as the games active populace stays below a count of twenty. Just be careful if you decide to delve into the realm of MagicDuel Adventure. The world shapes you as much as you shape it. And if you're ever alone at night, traveling the lands and taking research notes... Only to notice blood on the walls... Just know. You might be next.

Discussion I've Realized something Weird with SpiritVale's Reviews.

Thumbnail

I was looking through the recent negative reviews for Spiritvale and I feel like these reviews are some weird bot accounts

Many of the accounts leaving negative reviews have only one review on their steam account and it is Spiritvale review. Some of them also appear to have no accessible Steam Community profile at all. These accounts look suspiciously similar to bots or accounts created specifically to leave a negative review.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is there another explanation for why so many of these reviews seem to come from accounts with almost no visible activity?

Discussion AI MMO RPG with buttefly effects WHEN?

Upvotes

Sword Art Online, Ovperlord, BOFURI and more. These are animes where the main character enter an mmo rpg with interactive nps. I want a fantasy game so interactive and real where I i feel completely immersed. To start i don't care about augumentive/virtual reailty, innovating that would be either risky or problematic, focus on innovating Artifical Intellgienve: a game we all yearn to play could easily be developed, published and continuously updated.

There's a few manhwa I read where the protagonists changes the "main scenario by doing new things post reincarnation. What im suggesting is that "AI MMO RPG" should have a main story line, but every single action has a butterfly affect, from changing the past, present and future.

To achieve this butterfly affect, the game must have every NPC installed with Artifical Intellgience, this will cause them to have their own life, personl tasks, the ability to change, adapt, influence and think like a human and lastly remember everything prior to dying. The opportunities are then endless, whether they rebel, team up, conquer or create in game items outside of the games code. This includes the player discovering new items, randomized quests, unique martial arts and magic.

This would be more than a game, this would be the closest thing we'd have to reality. A major setback would be power scaling, and not making the game feel like a simple simulation and RNG. Should magic be studied, and then executed? Should there be cultivation? Or perhaps would the game be like sword art online 2/ roblox, where anyone can be a developer with access to these highly trained NPCs that can cause butterfly-effects, following the plot at the authors disgression, thus creating all sorts of games in a singular platform.

In conclusion, I hope games get a huge upgrade in the next decade and i wish this style of innovation had more recognition

Discussion Anyone here still playing Silkroad Online? I came back recently on TRSRO Knidos

Upvotes

I recently came back to Silkroad Online after not playing for a long time and decided to try the official Turkish version, TRSRO. I'm currently playing on the Knidos server.

Knidos is Chinese-only with a level 100 cap, which is one of the reasons I picked it. It feels closer to the older Silkroad that I remember, with the job system, caravans and the usual trader/hunter/thief stuff.

I know private servers are pretty popular with Silkroad players, but I wanted to play on an official server this time. I've played private servers before and didn't really want to invest time into another server without knowing how long it would stay around.

The main problem with TRSRO is the language barrier. Most of the community is Turkish, so finding English-speaking players can be difficult.

I've been trying to get a few international/English-speaking players together on Knidos so we can help each other, do jobs and caravans together and eventually have a decent group for guild activities. Nothing hardcore, just trying to have some people to actually play with.

If anyone here used to play Silkroad and wants to give it another try, Knidos might be worth checking out. And if you're already playing there, feel free to message me.

Curious how many people here actually played Silkroad back in the day, and what version/server you played on.

Self Promotion You gave me a lot of feedback last time, and today we’re testing our first server-wide boss

Post image
Upvotes

Some of you might remember Lootale Slash from the last time I posted here.

I got a lot of useful feedback from that post, and since then I’ve been working on quite a few improvements, especially around performance and quality of life. There’s obviously still a lot to improve, but I really appreciate everyone who took the time to play and share feedback.

Today at 21:00 UTC, I’m hosting the first server-wide boss event in Lootale Slash.

The idea is to bring as many players together as possible for a special event and also use the opportunity to stress test the server with everyone fighting in the same area.

I’ll spawn a special boss with exclusive drops, and everyone who participates in the battle will receive a unique account badge for taking part in the first server boss event in the game.

Anyone can join, regardless of level, but I’d recommend being at least level 20 if you don’t want to die too easily to the boss.

Lootale Slash is a free-to-play online pixel-art top-down ARPG, available on desktop through the browser and on mobile through Google Play and the App Store.

If you want to join us, the event starts today at 21:00 UTC.

Discussion Warm take: I love MMOs where crafting requires real time days

Upvotes

Hi. I know this kind of mechanic isn't particularly loved, if not hated, by players but I honestly love it. I really like where crafting is complicated, requires multiple steps transformation and also real time days to complete the whole. In my opinion it really gives value to the things you are crafting and can create that old school "wow" when you see certain buildings or a player wearing certain things that actually requres lot of time to complete. What do you think about it?

ps: I am not talking about p2w MMOs where you can pay to reduce the timer, only about games where everyone is on the same boat.
