So I just fresh installed Linux Mint and am facing this issue with all browsers (tested on chrome, brave, Firefox) where any porn site just keeps loading without showing any errors. I have no Internet issues as well as other sites load fine. It seems to be some kind of firewall but I don't know what. Also it's not my isp since I can load them on another devices using the same wifi network.

Edit: This post blew up way more than I expected it to. Other than the great jokes there were some great solutions. I tried using VPN and I think it works sometimes now. I don't get enough time from work to test other solutions so will try during weekends. Nevertheless the replies have been hilarious on this thread xD

Edit 2: The issue is now resolved, yes it was a dns problem. Thank you to everyone who gave a solution and other who cracked great jokes!

Ubuntu 24.04, just the built-in graphics drivers. Sometimes when it wakes from sleep, the login box will flee from the mouse pointer when you try and click on it to type your login credentials. Was just wondering if anyone else had this issue!

Old (GTK) vs New (QT)

Does anyone know why the Easy Effects devs decided to rebuild the app in QT? I dont mind QT/KDE apps but IMHO the app looks really bad now.

i first started off with windows as how most people have and ive always just gotten used to having a lot of icons on my desktop
or more specifically shortcuts so i dont have to go to the file explorer (linux equivalent of dolphin) and yeah i like that, its convenient
and pretty much every single windows user that ive seen in my life also had icons on their desktop
and i just took that for granted, as in, everyone does that
ive recently switched to fedora, more specifically fedora 42 with kde plasma as its GUI and its good, and im applying the same philosophy here
it is a bit harder to make shortcuts on fedora
on windows its literally just right click and a "create shortcut" option appears
on fedora it requires a few extra sub menus and clicks but still simple but i am surprised that LITERALLY no one else does this
like ive visited a lot of linux subreddits, discord servers and so on and every time i see someones linux desktop....... its just COMPLETELY empty
no icons anywhere
why is this the case? because clearly icons are a thing on linux, obviously
its not even hard to create a shortcut
its very simple
and i want to preface that im not judging people who dont have any icons on their desktop but im surprised that linux users generally avoid them while windows users are the complete opposite in this regards

Whenever I see some Linux bros in YouTube comments about pc/windows/microsoft office stuff, they often bought up LibreOffice, I haven't heard of OnlyOffice or OpenOffice until this September. From what I've seen, Libre is also a bit outdated while Only seems more intuitive because it looks much closer to MS Office (plus I heard it has better compatibility with MS Office files?). Not to mention it seems to be the most mentioned Libre alternative.

So, why does Libre seem more popular in Linux over its alternatives? I haven't used Linux yet because the battery management seems to be doing worse than Windows and my battery is already bad enough (but I've been kinda eyeing on Linux just in case), so I didn't get to have a first hand experience on them just yet.

I love my background and I love my theme, but the desktop apps do kinda ruin it for me it just SUUUUCKS but I also want a place to see all my icons easily.

I cant do the gnome thing where all my apps are under my desktop, that also sucks.

So, what do you all do??? Do you just put yr shit in folders???

Three days ago I bought a notebook and downloaded Ubuntu version 26.04 LTS. I downloaded Opera, which is the browser I normally use, and with only one tab open on the home screen, it was using more than 3GB of memory. In Brave and Firefox, it was around 1GB.

Is this normal? Did I do something wrong?

I wanted to make something that was more user friendly than something like htop, and less cluttered than something like KDE system monitor with more useful abilies similar to what Windows task manager offers, and was also user friendly for someone new to Linux. I vibe coded this app but it seems it work very well after hours of effort. I call it Taskwire.

UPDATE: currently on version 1.52, compiled as C++ standalone executable! Lot's of fixes and small changes since this post. This is probably the last small update I will make for a while, the next update will be bigger, I need to decide on what additions I should focus on/ if I need to do any rewrites, optimization etc. I need to put project manager hat on and brainstorm ideas for a while. I am still learning things as I go but this has been an absolute blast. Thank you to everyone who has been supportive and helpful, I greatly appreciate you!

I switched over from windows 11 to linux mint a few days ago and have been enjoying it so far, except for when I want to play games. I was told steam games worked great on linux, and I got proton installed properly, made sure my nvidia driver was recognized by turning off secureboot, the whole thing.

Despite this, my games still crash quite easily. Most of the time it's deadlock, which makes some sense since it's still an unoptimized game in beta testing, but I also ended up crashing the bazaar twice, just from trying to do normal things like open discord in the background, or take a screenshot of my win screen. When these crashes do happen, they brick my whole computer. I can't open the terminal, I can't input any commands at all. The only thing that's responsive is my mouse cursor, and so each time I hold down power button to force the pc off, which can't be good for my system.

This rarely, if ever, happened while I was using this same computer on windows 11, and to make it worse if a game like deadlock crashes once, the next time I open it the game just auto-crashes in the loading screen and bricks my computer again. I just end up needing to reinstall the whole game and it just makes no sense.

I haven't heard of this being a widespread issue before, can anyone help?

I need to use Safe Exam Browser (SEB) for an exam, but SEB doesn’t officially support Linux.

I’ve already looked into using a Windows VM, but unfortunately that doesn’t work for my situation because SEB needs to interact with the host system in ways that a VM can’t provide.

So I wanted to ask:

Is there any reliable way to install and run Safe Exam Browser natively on Linux, or through Wine/another compatibility layer?

If anyone has managed to get SEB working on Linux, I’d really appreciate knowing how you did it and which Linux distribution/version you used.

So, a LOT of linux distros default to the same browser choice, it's always Firefox. The thing with it is, Firefox always seems to have issues on all of my machines. It's always slower, less performant, is more prone to memory leaks, but it seems ubiquitous on the majority of distros. I've been daily-driving Chromium-based browsers for the majority of my computing time since I got a decent PC in 2016, through now. It's a lot smoother being on a Chromium browser, like it was back in my Windows days, but for some reason i feel a twinge of guilt(?) for swapping away from Firefox routinely.

Now, I try to go back and see if my issues are fixed, but it seems like every new version, same old problems I dealt with for 8 years of trying still keep following me no matter what. I'm not quite as "privacy-purist" as some, it seems, but one thing that bugs me is that Firefox ALWAYS marks me as having a "unique fingerprint" no matter what I do, meanwhile something like Brave or Helium gives me a "randomized fingerprint". But that's whatever, not a lot of browsers get that. The main issue I always had with Firefox was slower performance and higher memory usage, often leaking memory way faster than on Chromium. going to about:memory fixes a lot of it, but I'd rather not have to do all that. is there actually something wrong with me swapping out the default browser for something Chromium-based, or am I overthinking? sometimes i get yelled at in other circles for doing so but it's like...uh... wtf.

My work pc uses Linux mint, and my biggest problem is they every time I need to install something like podman or anything that isn't present on the software manager, I have to do research on whether there is an apt or curl command to install something, or find out how to extract whatever weird format the app comes in from the website.

On windows, you just go on a website and download an exe or msi. I'm getting tired and frustrated of these constant bumps when I just wanna start doing what I'm actually supposed to.

Y'all got any advice for this problem? I don't wanna switch to windows and I also think it'd cause more problems in other areas

I feel like the man pages on the terminal have not kept up with the times and became somewhat of an encyclopedia or thesis on the subject instead of a quick reference. They are good maybe if internet connectivity is non existent and you want to have all your questions about something answered.

But it is beyond frustrating to look up how to use something. PLEASE! For the love of whatever is good, help me learn it or help me find a better tool that actually gives me quick examples and easy to understand documentation on things.

Nowadays, I leave the terminal, type things like "how to do X in this specific way on linux terminal" and then google's AI intercepts it and gives me commands to run with short explanations. But I don't like leaving the terminal and going to google.

How have you guys solved this problem? Or am I the only dumb one?

I am on fedora 44 and I love linux. I have almost 2-3 Years of experience with linux. Hence it seems kinda weird to write this on this sub.

So, I need Visual studio for my college as they use ASP.Net framework or something. Which only works on Visual studio.

I have tried running it with dotnet run but it does not work. Yk how colleges are they are very strict with the formating they specifically use Visual Studio 2010. And I just discovered that it does not work on linux. Now While i can convert those pages to razor page and run them on my system via dotnet run but this is not the type of file they want.

When it comes to colleges and thier strict rules I hate it very much. Previously I had problems with cisco packet tracer as the linux version of it is ass and does not work properly, but thats not a problem anymore.

Now what can I really do ? I asked claude and it recommended me to

1.Dual boot windows yuck ! Microslop (I don't like dual booting as it has corrupted both my linux and windows installation many times)

OR

1. Install windows (I don't like windows)

OR

1. Virtual machine with something like gnome boxes or virtual box (I don't like it either too much overkill for coding and it makes the system slower)

What I was thinking is can I install and run Visual Studios On linux inside of a bottle ? Using botttles I have previously run many windows applications and games (Mostly games)

Or is there a better way of doing it which I a rookie and claude a dumbass AI does not know about.

I know Visual Studio does not work on linux and mac and its somewhat of an exclusive windows application. So what do you folks do about it ?

I don't understand why everyone in the Linux community recommends the Brave browser when discussing privacy and security. They say it's easy to update and great for these features, but my experience has been completely different.

Whenever I open more than five tabs in Brave, it either crashes or freezes my entire computer. Trying to update it is a hassle too—every time I try to update Brave Browser I get a pop-up saying, "Brave can't update; install a new version." This means I have to uninstall Brave, losing all my saved tabs, favorites, and history, then reinstall it.

Honestly, I'd rather use Firefox or ungoogled Chrome; it feels way better in comparison. Plus, I don't think Brave is as secure and private as many claim, but I won't dive into that dark rabbit hole right now.

I previously posted this on the Brave subreddit, but the mods removed my post without any explanation and then blocked me. This just reinforces my point that there are issues with Brave on Linux.

I have not installed any player, so far I have used Rythmbox and VLC, they are the default ones in Lubuntu. Rythmbox is better for me because I can make playlists, and it's more organized, but it doesn't have the best UI and I can't see the lyrics of the songs. So my question is: what is your favorite player and why? I want to try other players to see how they are.

Question in title, I've done a bit of googling to see what the status of Adobe working on Linux is. Unfortunately stuff like GIMP, while useful, isn't really a replacement for my work, and Substance Painter is too amazingly good to ditch unfortunately.

I've seen some scattered discussions where some people claim some old versions work with some workarounds, though I would need a more current version at my disposal since Painter especially added extremely useful tools recently (things like ribbon path etc).

I've come across WinBoat which makes the claim that it will run pretty much anything, but I've not found anything specific to the Adobe suit. Can anyone shed light on the current state of Adobe on Linux? That's probably my one dealbreaker still holding me back from seriously considering it, since I work with their software on the daily. (Aside from Proton Drive apparently, but I'm hopeful their suite gets updated, but haven't followed that too closely so my info might be outdated/wrong).

Well I just discovered an alternative for Libreoffice, which is Onlyoffice. But if you typed Onlyoffice and search it in Reddit, you will see there a lot of post and comment are trying to stop you from using it, I meant it Open source and have Large community, what can go wrong with an app like that ? (And I don't really understand why people say stop using it without a reason ?) Thank you!
