I’m really hoping someone might be able to help me. My dog of 16 years died recently, and I’ve been thinking what would be a nice thing to do for her grave here at home. We travelled a lot across the uk together, especially beaches. I would love to out some stones from our favourite places on her grave.

My husband and I had our honeymoon on the outer Hebrides, travelling in my in-laws camper van with of course our little black dog.

Would anyone be able to send me a stone from an outer Hebridean beach? We particularly enjoyed vatersay, barra airport beach, eriskay, and the scalpay. But I realise this is a stab in the dark, so anywhere from the coast of the outer Hebrides!

Hi all, I’m currently walking the Hebridean way with my partner. Unfortunately her boots got damaged the week before we set off, and the replacements are causing her quite a bit of discomfort.

Does anyone have any experience buying or ordering hiking boots here? We will be in Tarbert on Saturday.

Hello everyone! I’ve seen a couple posts in here in similar regards, but my husband I are American and attempting to cycle the Hebridean Isles. We’ve pretty much figured out most of it : flights, trains, ferries, and lodging : but I can’t for the life of me find a place to rent bikes. I’ve seen Barra Bike on the tourist website but googling specific locations from Florida has proven difficult. We’re also wondering the logistics of getting the bikes back to the beginning of the course once we’re at the finish. If anyone has any insight, I’d be greatly appreciative!

Our plan so far is plane to Glasgow, train to Oban, and ferry to Castlebay. Would renting a bike in Glasgow be the best option and just bring them with us for the travel? As we’d hopefully be flying out of Glasgow back home at the end and can return the bikes that way? Any and all advice accepted 😅

A little background, my husband is an avid cyclist, and I'm not. He'd love all of that but I'm pretty sure I would either die on my way up one of the hills, or give up and need to be carted back to civilization in a wheelbarrow. I do cycle for exercise, but it's very flat where I live so I don't have any confidence in my ability to do hills.

I asked AI for help and it suggested that I get a shuttle from Vatersay to Ardmhor Ferry Terminal, then take the ferry to Eriskay and start the bike ride there. It estimated about 70 miles of biking, mostly flat except for one short steep part right at the beginning.

For those who have done this ride, what's your opinion on this plan? Is that first hilly part doable for a not-terribly-in-shape cyclist? I don't mind being the slowest cyclist ever, I just want to know if it's realistic.

If not, does this plan with the shuttle seem feasible and would it still be worthwhile to cycle the flatter parts? From what I've seen it looks incredibly beautiful so I think the answer is yes.

I'm a PhD student from the University of Aberdeen. My research is looking at fish diversity between different seagrass beds and I'm planning on coming to collect water samples from An Caolas Barrach towards the end of the month (22nd-29th August). I wondered if anyone from Barraigh/Èirisgeigh/Uibhist a Deas would be willing to take me out on their boat for about an hour over the course of three days, so I can collect samples from beds that are difficult to reach via kayak. I have all my own equipment so just need the use of a boat. I am more than happy to pay for fuel and your time!

Im moving to Harris soon for my teaching probation (minimum 1 year but might decide to stay longer) The journey ill be making daily will be about 40 mins round trip from home to school.. I dont know much about cars and i am wandering what is a durable reliable car that I can depend on, that is fuel economic and not too expensive to run or fix. I really need to be able to rely on this vehicle on a day to day basis. What do folk recommend here? My budget is around £3000. Ill be moving up from glasgow so even tho i prefer car to be small, i need it to be spacious enough to move my belongings too as ill only be doing one trip.

I am planning to hike the Hebridean Way in late June early July and want to know what the temperatures are like at that time, especially considering wind chill. Could I get away with bringing a sleeping bag rated at 8°C and above?

wanted to surf the outer Hebrides with my son when his exams finish in July. looking for a good base, would port ness or shawbost be good? we’re looking for some small longboard waves, and their really into history so anything locally like that is a bonus

We are visiting Lewis the last week in May and wanted to visit the standing stones. All I can find out is that the visitor centre is shut and there are no facilities. What I can't find is if it's still possible to visit the stones (I know they're next to a road) and also I'm presuming that there isn't yet an entrance fee as there isn't a visitor centre!

My name is Kasey Garriock, and I’m an MSc student at Edinburgh Napier University, currently looking for volunteers to take part in research for my dissertation.

The project is currently titled: An investigation into rural men who work in care settings: reflections on, and negotiations with practices of masculinity in a changing world. Taking part will involve a one-to-one interview with the student researcher, which is estimated to take one to two hours. During the interview, we would discuss what it’s like living in a rural community, rural masculinity, and challenges faced by people in rural Scotland.

You may qualify to take part if you are 18 years or older, identify as a man, take part in voluntary or paid work caring for people, animals, or the environment, and live in one of the following areas: Isle of Lewis, Caithness, Lochaber, or Shetland.

I’m visiting North Uist during the last week of this May with my partner. Unfortunately I’m still recovering from an ankle sprain, so the more active aspects of the holiday are ruled out.

This will be my fourth time on the island and every time I leave thinking I should’ve made more of a conscious effort to spot wildlife, although plenty of animals have introduced themselves without much effort on my part already (sea eagles, porpoises etc!).

This time round I’d love to see as much wildlife as possible: sea eagles, basking sharks, dolphins, otters, anything really. I’ve got a decent pair of binoculars, enough patience, but one unreliable ankle.

Does anyone have suggestions for good wildlife spotting locations or drives where you don’t need to walk too far? We’ve got a car, so getting about isn’t a problem.

And if you have any other suggestions about things to do that don’t require a lot of walking - absolutely anything, not picky!

I dont have a boat, I am looking to swim to the location with fins and a weight belt

Be honest!... and I don't mean this post in any derogatory way at all to the island.... would it be a sensible thing to do to spend a week in Barra in the summer with only bikes, plus whatever service buses there are, for transport?

I’m currently producing a short documentary exploring modern life on the Outer Hebrides, and the ways the communities have changed. As part of this project, I’m hoping to include personal experiences of the “Hebridean Hum” - the mysterious droning noise that is causing issues for many people in the islands, especially around Stornoway and the Isle of Lewis.

Does anyone here know anything or have any insight into the Hum or the impact it is having? I'm trying to learn as much as I can about it and would love to speak to anyone with some experience!

I plan to visit the outer hebrides later this year, and I would like to rent a car at the airport.

Usually, I prefer to book "collision damage waiver" with my rental cars as scratches can always happen on unknown roads. More so as I am from continental europe and have to learn to drive on the other side.

However, there is only one rental car company at Stornoway airport, as it seems: Adventra.

They offer so called protection plans, however, the terms and conditions seem to cover only damage when the driver is not at fault.

It reads:
 If you purchase the PP and comply with applicable laws and these Terms & Conditions, and where the damage is reasonably determined by the Owner to have been caused by a third party, we will waive your liability for the portion of the damage cost that exceeds the applicable excess stated in your Rental Agreement. 

In my opinion, that means, if I am the one at fault for the accident, the protection plan does not help, or am I misunderstanding the wording?

Is it possible to rent a car at Stornoway airport with a "collision damage waiver" or comparable insurance that covers If I cause a accident or damage to the car?

Hi, I'm a homebrewer and I've been fascinated with the farmhouse beer brewing traditions all over Europe. Lately, some interesting sounding yeast strains from the Hebrides have become available on the market and I want to try them. I can make common beer styles that they seem good for of course, but I'd love to find out and try to recreate the beers that were traditionally made with them. Online sources are pretty much non existent, or have escaped my research efforts, so -

If you have any pointers, experiences, books or opinions about Hebridean farmhouse brewing, I'd be very thankful to hear them.

My parents were posted on benbecula when I was born, unfortunately they went back to family in London to have me but we came back shortly after

I'm now 27 and would love to revisit the island, specifically balivanic and id love to see of anyone is still around from when I was there (1998-1999, I was only there for a year or 2)

I know I was brought to a pub whilst my mum was working, I can't name it and would love to surprise my mum with a photo there if I can find it so don't want to ask her

If not, how easy is it to come from mainland to the island with a car? Ideally I'd bring the car over but can deal with it if not. Her birthday is end of December so I'm not rushed, I just think it would be really fun to call her on her birthday from the pub we used to go to back then
