I was explaining to this Ethiopian guy how Eritrea and its coastline had been separate entities from Ethiopia for many years. Eritrea was colonized by the Ottomans, Egypt, and later, for over 50 years, by Italy, the British, and then Ethiopia (1952–1991). He thought the whole story was BS and that the only reason Eritrea is independent is because of Isaias. WTF 😂
I showed him this quote, and he said it was AI-generated 😂. It really makes you wonder how much the Ethiopian general public actually knows about the history of Eritrea and Ethiopia lol. This man is in his mids 40s and he's very educated. I wonder what Ethiopia are being taught about both countries history back in Ethiopia

While genuine revolutionaries who challenged Western imperialism, people like Che Guevara and Patrice Lumumba, were hunted down and assassinated, those who served the interests of the West were protected and empowered when convenient.
So it’s no surprise that his so called allies abandoned him the moment Mengistu arrested him. A puppet has value only as long as it serves its masters. Once it is no longer useful, it gets discarded. That is the reality of being a political instrument of foreign powers.

On Google it says that the dmv area holds the largest population of habeshas outside Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Thats insane!

How did habeshas end up specifically in the dc area in America? It’s similar to Somalis in Minnesota and Guyanese in New York City and other immigrant groups having pockets in specific areas, but I’m just curious *how exactly* Eritreans and Ethiopians chose the DMV area.

I looked it up and there was an article that mentioned that Haile Selassie had sent some Ethiopians to go to school at Howard university, and that established this pipeline between our region of the world and the DMV. Also, apparently during Derg when a lot of people were fleeing, there were direct flights to DC from Ethiopia compared to other states.

Does anyone know anything more about this? I’m fascinated with how groups of people will all migrate to the same area over time, like how did that begin with Ethiopia and Eritrea specifically?

Has anyone noticed PTSD/trauma from the older generations of Eritreans who lived through Derg? And for that matter, has anyone noticed PTSD/trauma of the older Eritreans who fought in the war?

I mainly know amiches, any family I have that grew up in Eritrea during the war are either dead or distant relatives. Curious to know other people’s observations. Habeshas, especially the older generation, don’t take mental health stuff serious but has any one else noticed the older generation has some trauma from what they experienced?

Suspended from r/Eritrea with no explanation

I was recently suspended from this subreddit without being given any clear reason or explanation for what rule I supposedly violated.

I’m making this post because I genuinely want clarification. If I broke a specific rule, I’m completely open to hearing what I did wrong and taking accountability for it. But suspending someone without identifying the comment/post in question or explaining what rule was violated doesn’t seem fair or transparent.

This is supposed to be a community where Eritreans and people interested in Eritrea can discuss different perspectives, even when we don’t always agree with each other.

I’m asking the moderators to explain:

- What specifically resulted in my suspension?

- What subreddit rule did I violate?

- Why wasn’t that explanation provided when I was suspended?

I’m not looking to create drama or attack anyone. I just think moderation should be consistent and transparent, especially in a community that represents all of us.

If anyone else has had a similar experience here, I’d be interested to hear what happened.

My memory a bit fuzzy but 2 songs about suicide/death. One is about a mother hanging herself and the son found her body himself as a little boy, and his father wasn’t with his mother. I think they were divorced or something.
Another was this little girl who drowned (he tried saving her) i think it was in eritrea.
These two songs timeline are about late 2000s to early 2010s. Both songs have a music video, and are kinda black and white.

When u guys text family in Eritrea, do they ever put “…” at the end of their texts? I don’t know why but my cousins do that. To me 3 dots means awkwardness, but I’m guessing it’s a different meaning there. Anyone know what it means or what it’s used to indicate?
