Announcement Important dates and resources for CUNY students

Upvotes

Hey everyone, as the fall semester is right around the corner I figured that I should post these links for new and current students.

The academic calendar has been posted for Fall through Spring 25-26. CUNY follows the same academic calendar meaning your days off should all be the same. You will have random days where Tuesdays follow a Monday schedule, Fridays will follow a Monday schedule, etc. Try your best to plan ahead.

https://www.cuny.edu/academics/academic-calendars/

CUNY also has resource centers to help you succeed. CUNY offers food pantries, housing assistance, emergency funds, mental health resources and other resources. Please use these resources if you need them. CUNY can help but you as students need to be proactive in seeking these resources.

https://www.cuny.edu/about/administration/offices/student-affairs/programs-services/cuny-resource-centers/

If you require accommodations, ask for them via your school's Office of Student Disability Services. Reasonable accommodations and academic adjustments may include, but are not limited to, providing the student with assistive technology or other auxiliary aides, extra time for tests or papers, access to an elevator where available, a note taker during lectures, or permission to bring a personal aide to assist the student during class.

Question SEEK Stipend Delay

Post image
Upvotes

I was told that I would be getting my SEEK stipend today, but I haven’t received it yet. I got a previous refund from the book check so I know my direct deposit is working. Could it be that today is Labor Day and that I have to wait until tomorrow?

Adult learners at CUNY, what is it like?

Upvotes

I’m 29 and moving from the Middle East to nyc this January to start school after being out of formal education for quite a few years.
I’m curious what the experience has been like for other adult/nontraditional students. Do you encounter many other students in their late 20s, 30s and beyond? Do adult students actually socialize and become part of campus life, or is it mostly people taking evening classes and heading straight back to work/life afterward?

I’m also wondering what the adjustment back to school was like after being away for a long time. Any tips for someone who spent the last decade having a career and used to a very different type of hard work?

I’d love to hear what the CUNY experience looks like when you’re starting at 29 rather than 18.

My main worry is that I’ll find myself extremely lonely in a foreign city (and a foreign country), just going to classes, the gym, doing homework, going to sleep...

TAP conern

Upvotes

Hi all- older adult CUNY CC student entering my second semester- just hit 40 credits(had some transfer from a million years back). Anyway- I'm a bit concerned looking at CUNYfirst. All financial aid is in place and accepted- but TAP states it is in a "non disbursement" status. Is this normal the week before the semester starts, or am I kinda screwed for whatever reason? I'm definitely poor enough for TAP by far- it can't be that. I've never qualified as a dependent student either as a former foster youth- can't be that either. Scratching my head at this, I suppose I'm just looking for some reassurance that this is indeed normal and I'm not out the TAP grants that I need to finish my degree.

Charged for summer term

I just reenrolled to college and this is my first semester back. I noticed that I have a 100$ summer term charge. I already contact financial aid and I’m waiting to hear back from them. Does anybody have any clue of what it may be?

Transfer Student Questions!

Upvotes

Hi! I'm a freshman at a small school in rural PA and am thinking about transferring to a city college. I am an Early Childhood major and am a swimmer. I want a diverse, LGBTQ friendly school with lots to do close by, and obviously with good academics and a high student success rate. Can any transfer students and/ or education majors share their experiences? Also, how does housing work, and is it hard to get financial aid? Thanks!!!

Discussion Urgent advice please

Upvotes

I’m 20 years old who studies business admin at bmcc who has a good academic standing. For the past two years I’ve been working at a fast food restaurant because I had no other job opportunities my way. I tried I tried and I tried. I can’t stress this enough and I got nothing in return. I see people who go to CUNY schools getting internships at J.P. Morgan and Morgan Stanley and the four accounting companies like Deloitte KPMG and etc. One thing I will say is I’m an introvert even if you forcefully put me in a social environment. I still remain a introvert and I don’t know how to talk to people in these settings. I have attended so many career affairs and job fairs and clubs just to make some connections and a return. It was just nothing but a waste of time for me because I got nothing or maybe I just sound selfish. I don’t know but I’m really frustrated. I’ve applied to so many places that I still couldn’t get any response even I applied for campus jobs and what not. At this point, I feel like I’m just gonna have to focus on school and try to get the best grades as possible. A part of me feels like it’s over and even after graduation I will be working at my fast food restaurant which is minimum wage and I really hate it or I won’t be working a job that I dreamed of I don’t know.

Hey, I would appreciate any insight on this. Im enrolled at BMCC this fall semester and I did not participate in one of my online asynchronous classes until now. Where can I check if I got WN'd or not? I still can access the classroom and assignments on Brightspace.

FAFSA

Upvotes

Hello fellow students. I need advice from anyone who’s been in my shoes. I had to verify my citizenship this summer. Apparently it takes a month or two to be processed. They told me since it’s Green Card, it even takes longer? Meanwhile, I had to pay for my tuition out of pocket and it was totally unanticipated expense for me that slapped me in the face. I check my cunyfirst for newly posted financial aid every day but no news. Am I gonna get this money back or should I just accept the fact that I have to cover all these costs?
:(

Question Gen Chem II at KCC during Winter?

Upvotes

Does anyone know if KCC offers CHM 1200 during the winter as hybrid or online? Or any other colleges that offer gen chem II as hybrid? I failed with a D at my college, but got an A for the lab portion.
I’m retaking it at another college rn and I really think I have to drop it… there’s no way im getting anything past a C with exams being 70% of the grade, its quite math heavy and I am the worst at that unfortunately.
Gen chem is required for my grad program and a D is not acceptable, and I also want to graduate on time :(

Hunter Is a transfer next semester possible?

Upvotes

I’m currently attending Hunter College as a freshman and was wondering if it’s possible to transfer to Queens College next semester. I’m just wondering what the process is like, mainly with my financial aid as my FAFSA and TAP are with Hunter so would that switch over? Since I just started college I’d want to do the transfer before I actually do any classes that give credits towards my intended major because I know some credits dont transfer over equally. I was accepted to Queens College for this fall semester but I’m already registered for classes here at hunter so I’m questioning if it’s possible for next semester. Also who would I talk to in regards to this?

ASAP Extension?

Upvotes

Hello! I’m part of the asap program but for a year and a half I wasn’t enrolled in classes because my father passed away and my family became financially unstable so I had to get a full time job and help my family. My family is doing better now so I decided to enroll in classes this semester but then I received an email from my advisor that this is my last year in the program and I’m not sure what to do because the metro/OMNY card really helps me out since I’m not working at the moment. So I was wondering if anyone knows if it’s possible to get an extension for asap?

KCC How can I, and SHOULD I switch to a Pre-Med path??

Upvotes

I (M21) transferred to KBCC after dropping out of CUNY 2 years ago, and I am very excited for classes to begin. However, I am in a bit of a dilemma. My major is business administration and management, which I look forward to studying. But I am also interested in medical school. With all of the uncertainty of the economy and the world in general, I want a career that's going to grant me financial security. And due to my religious beliefs, I don't want to lose myself in the rat race while forgetting the more important things in life. I want to benefit society and also help people. I want to get into the medical field, but I have no idea how to even begin or what the process is like, let alone what specialty I want to pursue. I feel so conflicted and don't know what to do.

The advisors at KBCC are very supportive and assured the students on orientation day that if we want to switch majors, we can check which credits would line up with our new one and see if it works. I would honestly prefer to minor in business and admin when I transfer to a 4 year CUNY, but at the same time I suck at math and don't believe that I can handle the workload of science classes right now, especially with all the catching up I have to do this semester along with my commute to school and back home. Should I just graduate with a business degree and come back later to start the pre-med track if I still want to pursue it? What should I do in this situation? I'd appreciate any support I can get.

Question Which CUNY for premed

Upvotes

Hello!

I’m looking to transfer to a NYC school from an OOS CC. I have a good gpa and pretty good EC’s I’m just wondering which CUNY school would have the best premed track? I hear good things about hunter and city college but I haven’t actually spoken to anyone that has been there or taken the classes. I hear some bad things about them being underfunded and not having good support, is that true?

Thanks!

Finance/Business Major Guide for CUNY

Upvotes

RecruitingFromLexington.com

This basically covers everything the school should, but doesn't. Repost from r/Baruch .

Some bits are outdated, since the site hasn't been updated since I was in college, but most of it should still hold up.

If you do everything there, starting from freshman year, I don't see how things won't work out decently. Best to do things early, since everything starts a year ahead.
