Husbandry Discussion 🔥🦎HOT WEATHER GUIDE - Keeping your tank and reptiles cool

Upvotes

This is our annual Hot Weather guide for those who need advice on keeping their tank below 26c / 82f.

Place ice cubes on top of the mesh away from the geckos resting area - the water will drip down into the soil or evaporate, allowing cool air to circulate around the tank
Swamp cooler - ice cubes in a bucket with a fan behind it to push cool air around the room
Ice cubes inside water bowl - quick evaporation, same premise with allowing cool air to circulate
Spraying the tank with room-temperature water
Portable AC units - those in the UK can now buy small ice cube AC units which are similar to that of a swamp cooler!
Refreshable gel ice packs - specifically gel only! These should be wrapped around in a cloth of some type and laid on top of the tank mesh
Escape-proof mesh playpens - temporary relief for your animal, make sure to provide lots of foliage for them so they feel safe and comfortable
Chilled CGD

Spraying with cold or frozen water - this WILL cause thermal shock, and will stress your animal out, please stick to room temperature water
Ice packs inside the vivarium
Free roaming
"Bathing" in cool water - similar premise, geckos do not need to swim and this will stress them out instead of helping them

Signs of overheating include:

🔴 Lethargy
🔴 Restlessness / running around in the tank / attempting to escape
🔴 Consistent refusal to eat
🔴 Significant weight loss
🔴 Wrinkled skin, kinked tail, sunken eyes (dehydration)
🔴 Burrowing

These symptoms don't necessarily mean your animal is overheating, as things like burrowing or refusal to eat could be linked to husbandry or that your gecko is new to its environment and is still settling in. If you are ever unsure, please take your animal to a vet to get them checked up.

Keep safe, drink water, and make sure you chill out too!
Any questions? Feel free to ping us a ModMail, and we'll be happy to answer.

Does he look healthy?

I got him in march and I believe him to be somewhere between 6-8 months old, he weights 10-11 grams depending on the day, I left him with my brother over the summer for abt 3 months and he did a wonderful job but wanted to get the opinion of people who know a little bit more about these guys than I do!

Tessie found a dubia once

She found a roach in her hidey ONE time, and now she stares at her hidey, multiple times a night, apparently just waiting for one to suddenly appear.

I love her and her single brain cell.

Tessie is my first CG. I’ve had rankins before and loooved. I was hoping she’d be a little more social when I first got her a year ago. Since then, I’ve backed off on trying to handle because neither of us were enjoying the experience. I’ll still feed her Pangea from a spoon so we bond over that.

I was feeling a little bummed recently that I’ve built such a lovely life for her and never get to see her use it… so I got a night vision camera and I’m OBSESSED. Fr, I went from feeling disenfranchised to staring at every 10 second clip of her tail moving, and subsequently squealing.

I'll sometimes find my crestie sleeping in this position (she usually sleeps in her wood hide). I just don't get why she decides this is the position lol. Some other pics of Scarlett being herself.

I got the mister, coconut fiber substrate, reptile vet numbers, reptile medicines, dietary foods, calcium powder, and soon he will have enough space to climb to his hearts content, we will add wood, many leaves and hidey places, vines to climb all of it! He will have the best life possible soon!

How do I keep my gecko cool?

Post image
Upvotes

This is my 3 year old male crested gecko Ziti. It has been pretty hot recently in the room I keep him in and his enclosure has consistently been reaching 82-83°F. What can I do to cool it down? I have been using methods I found online like little fans on the mesh, ice cubes dripping down from the mesh and I have another bigger fan just blowing along the top of the enclosure. Is there anything else I can do?

Should I add/change anything in his new tank?

I have a 18x18x24 tank thats bioactive for my juvenile cresti who was dumped on me. I have pothos, ferns, snake plants, and philodendrom(I dont know if thats how its spelled lolz). Along with isopods and spring tails. I am getting a bigger light that will be a strip to add more light for the plants, but other than this is there anything I should add? Take out? Im feeling pretty good but would love input !!!

Hello! I just adopted this almost 2 year old female crestie. She was in another family that treated her well but didn’t give her enough attention.
Anyways I bought the whole enclosure they had and she’s been home for 24 hours. Normal behaviour when we picked her up and handled great. We have her home now, obviously no handling and just letting her settle. I noticed this calcium lump on her tail. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Lighting question

Post image
Upvotes

I’m building a bioactive enclosure for my crestie and am wanting some advice on the lighting I should buy for my plants. I have an 18x18x36 so it’s pretty tall, I found this product on Amazon that I think might work? I was planning to just put all 4 on top of the screen and run on a timer for 10 hours a day. Does this seem like a good product or should I look elsewhere? Also if anyone has advice on how to secure plants high up I don’t have any ledges or cups attached into the background so I’m not sure how to plant them that high. Thank you!
