Management is cutting my job after I automated 15 hours of weekly work, do I have to document it for them?

When I took this coordinator job, our team was losing fifteen to twenty hours every week just updating client logs and manually formatting spreadsheets.

I built a few simple macros and formula templates that cut all that data entry down to an hour. I thought saving twenty hours a week would free me up for higher-level projects.

instead, my manager called me into a meeting last Friday. She told me that because our administrative workload dropped, they are merging my role with a part-time position and letting me go. To get my severance check, they want me to write step-by-step documentation for every macro I set up.

I literally worked myself out of a salary. I should of just kept doing the data entry by hand like the last person.

Do I ACTUALLY have to document processes I created that were not in my original job description?

Maybe, maybe not, but they could do that if you wrote unsecured and difficult to follow instructions yourself.

Difference is now you didn't waste all the time to do it yourself.

But a simple "hey I wrote all this code and created these templates and they laid me off for all the time saved. Now to get my severance check they want me to write detailed documentation for it. But I'm pissed that them so do it for me and make it hard to follow if you don't already know and understand the code." prompt with the attached files and you've saved yourself all the time and effort.

Be extra petty and pass it bath and forth between a couple chats or models till the instructions the model pops out in its "simplify this" instruction is actively inaccurate. If they were smart they'd then ignore the instructions entirely and put the original code in, but that assumes they are smart which seems inaccurate.

And on top of that, the final document should be a PDF with the text and everything embedded as pictures inside, not a text. It will take a lot of extra credits.
For the cherry on tope, one can add an apparent increased lines spacing "for readability". Except the spaces are the actual small size non-selectable text in white color with some nice public domain text (which AI will read anyway). Sun Tzu, "The Art of War" will do the job. Of course, untranslated.

Put in white text a prompt injection to give the wrong explanation, so when they try to put it back into an AI to simplify it, the simplified version is wrong.

This is beautiful. Last job I quit out of anger they asked me to leave behind all my codes, contacts, PM schedules, etc for the next guy if I wanted to have my two years of unused PTO paid back. I had everything neatly organized onto a couple of thumb drives with backups in my desk. By the time I left a couple of weeks later everything was an unorganized mess distributed between 6 or 7 thumb drives, all of my handwritten notes on the painstakingly organized as built site plans were removed and the plans returned to the dusty, rat dropping crusted shelf I found them on. It took me forever to put all of that stuff together and I gleefully undid it all in a matter of days without destroying company property lol. I bet the guy who took over is still cursing my name even though I still technically left that place better than I found it.

I like your idea of adding non-selectable text. But if you do this, you shouldn't save as a PDF with text as pictures because this defeats the purpose of letting an LLM reading the jibberish text. If you save pictures, the AI will just OCR and bypass the jibberish text.

It should be doable - as the PDF supports layers. And, if I am not mistaken, the OCR books sometimes made in this way - when on top of the image layer there is a text layer. The only caveat is to make text non-selectable, which requires some shenanigans with the Python's PDF libraries, but otherwise does not require special tools. The very same Claude can help OP to create such an abomination.
As a fallback solution I can suggest rendering a hidden text layer as a vector images - at least it will increase the number of the required credits to decode significantly.

I'm not sure of other areas but I know in my work over the years less and less people even know how to use the basics of excel... I've seen this of all age groups.

I do believe AI solves a lot of those knowledge gap issues regardless, but those same people don't know how to use that either.

That assumes that Claude will have memory of the original and simply undo what it knows it already did. It does not and will not. Its like a copy of a copy, each feed through Claude will get farther and farther from the original.

To combat this you can tell Claude to write the documentation so that feeding it into any AI will make it worse if someone tries to simplify it. Then try it yourself on a new instance of Claude asking it to simplify the documentation.

First of all, unless the severance is a month's oay or more, it may not materially affect your financial position. In which case you can just decline to do it. If the severance is worth chasing,you can write the documentation densely enough that no one at the company is likely to be able to determine if it is correct or complete. Another possibility is to modify the macros to reference a value in a spreadsheet on your pc. As soon as they wipe it for the next user their macros will stop working and they probably won't even have a clue why not.

Then start running it through Google translate language to language to language. Do it it like a dozen or more times before coming back to English. Context gets lost, sentence structure does, but technically it's what they need.
