Is there something happening with the new kernels or is it just me?
Lately, booting up Arch with the kernels, 6.4.1, 6.4.2 and now linux 6.4.3.arch1-1 results in display completely going dead (no signal to monitor), and/or a kernel panic.
Interestingly enough, i was able to boot into 6.4.2 and the latest one once and i can't enter anymore upon reboot.
I'm now booting with the LTS kernel and it's completely fine, but i'm just wondering if something's happening or is it just messed up on my system for some reason.
Cheers!

it's been chug life on 6.4.x while gaming, i'm using lts until the amd memory clock thing gets fixed
•
u/Veprovina Jul 15 '23
Memory clock thing? Is that what's causing the issues.
•
u/cock_syrup Jul 15 '23
there was a thread in here a few days ago about amd game performance, one of the replies has a link to the reported bug, i guess we're waiting on the fix to applied

cool. I'm also experiencing another issue that popped up in 6.3.x where my tv no longer displays at 2560x1440p, it's working on Lts
•
u/Professorpimmel Jul 16 '23
I'm on manjaro using 6.4.2 can't say i have that issue. I monitored my Clockrates using Mangohud and all seems to work correctly from what i can tell. This is on a RX6600. How to reproduce this issue?
•
u/danao81 Jul 15 '23 edited Jul 15 '23
Finding the same issue on kernel 6.3.x on Fedora 38 in the last few days. Ironic that I don't have any problems on arch on my laptop with last kernels. Both systems are on Intel and amd
•
•
u/A_Talking_iPod Jul 15 '23
Lemme guess, AMD? Kernels 6.3 and 6.4 have been absolutely poop-tastic for AMD users, 6.4.3 has been the most stable since 6.3.9, but I still get kernel panics at boot and blank screens at login every now and then. It's honestly been kind of off-setting, though I get the taste for stable releases a bit more now. Maybe I should just use Mint
•
u/Veprovina Jul 15 '23
Just use the lts kernel in the meantime. It's the Arch version of a stable release.
•
u/ericek111 Jul 15 '23
Really? I have an RX 480 and after upgrading from 6.1, I am not able to suspend my PC without it locking up.
•
u/HAMburger_and_bacon Jul 16 '23
I never had this issue on Arch or Fedora but ever since trying Debian 12 with Kernel 6.1 I have had that locking up issue every time i put gnome to sleep.
•
u/bwalk Jul 16 '23
Same card, same issue. Currently on 6.4.1 and it seems to be resolved.
•
u/ericek111 Jul 16 '23 edited Jul 30 '23
I'm on 6.4.3-cachyos-bore, no luck. I'll try vanilla. EDIT: 6.4.7-cachyos-bore still borked, but vanilla works fine.
•
u/CNR_07 Jul 16 '23
Absolutely no issues on 6.3 and 6.4
Using openSuSE Tumbleweed and a 6700XT.
•
u/oofdere Jul 16 '23
Also no issues on any of the recent kernels, Arch w/ 6700XT. Might be because I'm using wayland/pipewire.
•

•
u/disco_sparrow Jul 15 '23
Ever since the 6.3.* kernels one of my monitors comes up dead. AMD 5950x and 7900xt here.
Going back to 6.2.* or LTS brings my display back.
Something's wonky in the kernel.
•
u/disco_sparrow Jul 15 '23
One more bit of info, according to xrandr and Plasma settings, my display is connected and active. It's just not receiving any signal.
Leaving Linux firmware as is and reverting just the kernel returns my display back to working.
•
u/Veprovina Jul 15 '23
Sonething's definitely wrong with the kernel then.
I can't even go to a TTY after the blackout at the beginning, just have to force reboot.•
u/disco_sparrow Jul 16 '23
Yeah, that would be the case for me too except I have a few monitors and all but one work fine. The screen that doesn't "activate" can never see anything.
I've had my configuration working for nearly 6-months now, so this is just sudden.
•
u/Veprovina Jul 16 '23
How many monitors? I have a dual monitor setup and they both turn off lol. Idk if it matters but one is connected to DisplayPort, and the other to HDMI. 1440p.
•
u/inifmatrix Jul 15 '23
I do not have any idea of why. It was happening while boot or shutdown and sometimes randomly .Kernel panics were happening when I was using 6.3 kernel. I have removed some dkms modules. May be some bad dkms modules have issues or may be kernel regression or amdgpu issue. Now I am using 6.4 kernel. No issues for me.
•
u/Veprovina Jul 15 '23
Weird. 6.3 worked perfectly fine for me.
At first i thought it was because i cleared all the pacman cache, but idk how that would affect a kernel. I cleared the cache, then updated, and upon restart, there was a kernel panic.
That was on 6.4.1.
When 6.4.2 updated, i was able to boot normally once. Then again, display dead upon restarting.
Same with the 6.4.3arch1-1 kernel. Was fine once, i thought cool, it's fixed, and now again, booted, then blank screen with no display signal.
I mean, i'll keep using the LTS kernel so i'm not locked out of my system because of it, i'm just wondering if anyone has an idea what's going on.
•
u/inifmatrix Jul 15 '23 edited Jul 15 '23
In my case, kernel panics were happening on 6.1 LTS kernel too. Unless we have logs we cannot tell. Modules from aur also breaks the system. It may be due to kernel regression in your case.
•
u/Veprovina Jul 15 '23
Well i don't have a lot of AUR modules, nothing that would interfere with the system at least, not in this way. But it seems too specific (amd) and widespread to be an AUR thing. Idk...
•
u/inifmatrix Jul 16 '23
Hmm. AMD problems are due to motherboard manufactures not providing bios update for linux. Most of the bioses are proprietary and support mostly windows and have poor support for linux and have problems like acpi ,lighting, tpm bug. Major change in kernel code sometimes may or can break systems . Its sad they are not providing open firmware and have to apply some tweaks to run linux properly.

i restored to old clone backup i had with 6.1.35-1-lts, and everything works fine. Sticking to it until the fixes come in. Alot AMD laptops with Nvidia GPUs said there was a bug too in new kernels causing games not able to load the nvidia gpu, and then there is the screen freeze then reboot to no login screen which myself and a few others said they had too....so there are a few bugs I suspect in the new kernels? Some people suggested a workaround was use the AMD GPU and bypass the Nvidia gpu and use flatpak version of Steam, but I got screen freeze while gaming and quality game was substandard too.... On 6.1.34-1-lts everything is ok for me for now...
•
•
u/geezcustard Jul 15 '23
same for me :) system freeze. AMD laptop
but since the last update seems to work fine again, let's see :)
•
u/_swuaksa8242211 Jul 16 '23
What kernel are you on now?
•
u/geezcustard Jul 16 '23
the last ZEN kernel
•
u/geezcustard Jul 17 '23
unfortunately, the PC froze again just now...
I have to use again the LTS kernel
•
u/virtualadept Jul 15 '23
It's the newer kernels. My server started having trouble around v6.3.5 with stability (mainboard: Asus ROG Crosshair viii Hero (wifi), CPU AMD Ryzen 9 3900XT @ 3.8 GHz) and I've been tinkering with it for weeks trying to work around it (including a package update at least once a week). Even on v6.4.2 things are still kind of screwy. I've heard from other quarters that using the LTS kernels seems to mitigate the stability issues later releases are having.
•
u/cxixhxo Jul 16 '23 edited Jul 16 '23
The 6.4 line is definitely trash for AMD laptops. I have random blackscreens on boots. No problems whatsoever on my Intel desktop system, though.
•
•
u/Dmxk Jul 15 '23
am i the only amd user that hasnt experienced any regressions? i havent seen any of these symptoms or the ones others describe(broken vram clock etc)

You don't have Nvidia gpu am I right? Im guessing seems to be affecting AMD laptops with Nvidia GPUs more...
•
u/marrsd Jul 23 '23
No Nvidia here and I've got the issue.
•
u/_swuaksa8242211 Jul 24 '23
I updated yesterday and I am ok so far , on the latest Lts kernel. Im on AMD laptop with AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU. Steam games play ok with nvida driver... Rebooting is ok also no blank screen...so far. Will try the other kernels later. I heard some people say they were ok on Zen kernel also?
•
u/X_m7 Jul 16 '23
Same, while I do have a couple of issues with VAAPI they're certainly not a recent regression, and one of them might even have been fixed in the meantime.
•
u/Machineraptor Jul 16 '23
No issues for me also. Ryzen 5600x and Radeon 6800 XT. Might be iGPU then? A lot of people having this issue here seem to have integrated AMD graphics.
•
u/Dmxk Jul 16 '23
i havent seen any issues on my 6800u based laptop either. but that doesnt have a dgpu and i don't use it for gaming, so i wouldn't notice worse performance.
•
u/Haythamn14 Jul 15 '23
Having exactly the same problem. It’s only a display issue, system is working; i can blindly login and type reboot and my system will reboot all that with the screen off, then just select LTS from my boot menu. Hope it gets a fix soon.
•
u/zackrider_k95 Jul 16 '23
I am having the same issue, even on zen kernel. Sometimes system boots, sometime it's just black screen. LTS kernel works perfectly fine.
•
u/Zweieck2 Jul 16 '23
I've been only on lts for some time now, glad I'm missing that.
Because I struggle with a weird problem where my laptop backlight is 0 until later in the boot process when arch restores it. Yes, even in GRUB and UEFI! Haven't found anything helpful yet, I just hope every time it boots fine. If not, I can at least find a monitor and HDMI cable for troubleshooting

•
u/Reutertu3 Jul 16 '23
Oh boy, gonna hold back with yay Was very happy with the 6.3 Kernel since it enabled you to use the new AMD P-State EPP Scaling.
•
u/Veprovina Jul 16 '23
What does yay have to do with it?
•
u/Sotch_Nam Jul 25 '23
probably meant yay as in yay -Syu, and the amd p-state epp scaling thing is the only good thing to happen to me when the kernel moved on to 6.x other than that it been really unstable and caused issues

u/dgregd Jul 18 '23 edited Jul 21 '23
I noticed the black screen problem with the latest linux-firmware package update. I have AMD 7600X and use the integrated graphics. The problem occurs only with the LG 4k monitor. A very old Full HD monitor works fine. In the logs I noticed a new error:
pop-os kernel: [drm:dm_edid_parser_send_cea.constprop.0 [amdgpu]] *ERROR* EDID CEA parser failed
I attempted to resolve this by loading the monitor settings via drm.edid_firmware. The workaround eliminated the error message, but the black screen persisted. Eventually, I resorted to an old laptop. Consequently, the new AMD 7600X desktop is now gathering dust.
Update: They reverted some changes to the AMD firmware so my 4k finally work.
•
u/Veprovina Jul 18 '23
Wait, pop-os is using new kernels?
•
•
u/happydemon Jul 15 '23
Kernel 6.4 has been the most unstable kernel I've seen in about 3 yrs, since being mostly full time linux at home. On LTS currently until the issues I'm seeing are resolved.
•
u/NoRecognition84 Jul 15 '23
I had similar problems with 6.4.1 and 6.4.2, but 6.4.3 is stable. The fact that it isn't for you probably has to do with your hardware config. My system is Ryzen 5600G/B550 mobo based with iGPU graphics.
•
u/regular_joe_can Jul 15 '23
Same combo and no issues w any of those kernels here. I -Syu just about every day.
•
•
•
u/Veprovina Jul 15 '23
Lmao i have the same exact system. 5600g with B550m mobo. :P What are the odds. :) But unless that "m" makes that much difference i doubt its related to hardware. I have 32 bf DDR4 3200mhz cl22, Ryzen 5 5600g and B550m mobo. I have a PCI GPU that's being used for GPU passthrough though, but that one loads with the vfio driver and has no effect on the Linux host.
•
u/NoRecognition84 Jul 15 '23
Mine is actually a B550I, so not much different other than the mobo size. Is your bios up to date?
•
u/Veprovina Jul 15 '23
Yeah, the chip is the same. Just a form factor difference. Yeah, the bios is updated.
•
u/Cyborg857 Jul 15 '23
My laptop's config is a Ryzen 5900HS (iGPU) + RTX 3080 (though I use the iGPU most of the time) and it's also doing that on kde+sddm, but the fact that OP has only an iGPU and still the same issue tells me it's not Nvidia's fault.
•
u/Veprovina Jul 15 '23
It's not gdm or sddm. It's not the igpu, i guess it's the kernel (since lts works without issues) but what exactly i don't know.
•
u/DrkMaxim Jul 16 '23
Recently I had this issue during a reboot and a cold boot, sadly I have the quiet parameter turned and I couldn't see anything. My splash screen just stuck loading and this seems to happen very randomly.
•
u/_swuaksa8242211 Jul 16 '23
Yup and seems especially if you are on AMD laptop? Im on AMD laptop with Nvidia GPU. Same thing..in the end froze screen then reboot blank login screen.
In the end I restored from a clone image I had with 6.1.35-1+lts kernel and it's all fine now. So I haven't updated again, I'm waiting until the bug(s) have been fixed...
•
u/joss_reeves Jul 16 '23
When 6.4.1 hit, my Bluetooth started stuttering and I switched to the LTS kernel and haven't looked back.
•
u/adaml984 Jul 16 '23
Same here, on LTS kernels no issues, on latest kernel problems with internet camera and microphone (hyper-x cloud 2)...
•
•
u/Syndelis Jul 16 '23
Although I haven't had problems with displays, I did have Bluetooth problems.
Under 6.4.X, bluetoothctl can't seem to find my mouse (MX Vertical). Works fine under 6.3.9, however.
•
u/eruwinuvatar Jul 16 '23
Not sure if it's related but booting up the initramfs generated by Booster has completely stopped working for me. Like it just completely freezes with zero systemd boot-up logs. Had to boot the one generated by mkinitcpio. Maybe I should try the Booster LTS one, haven't thought of that.
•
u/Veprovina Jul 16 '23 edited Jul 17 '23
UPDATE:
Just ran pacman -Syu, it updated the kernel to 6.4.3-arch1-2, and i succesfully booted into it.I'll keep using it, see if it starts acting up again like the previous ones did after a reboot. I'll edit it into this post if it breaks.
Also, thanks to all the people working hard to fix whatever's happening! :)
EDIT UPDATE: Well, the 6.4.3-arch1-2 kernel survived a few reboots, but it stutters every now and then a split second. Weird.

Ryzen 5 5600g with 32 GB DDR4 Cl22, using Ryzen igpu.
I have another AMD RX 260x 1GB gpu, but that's used for a VM and doesn't actually get loaded with linux drivers at startup so i don't think it matters, but in case it does - that's plugged into the PCI slot.
And some Gen4 SSDs, kingston nvme i think. Nothing too fancy for storage, but i do use BTRFS.

Yeah, that's what i did. On the LTS kernel now, works fine.
They updated the new one in the meantime but the system stutters some time, i don't think they're done fixing it just yet. But it survived a restart without a kernel panic or dead display so, progress. :)

u/Faurek Jul 15 '23 edited Jul 15 '23
I knew there was something up with Linux itself, I tried a few distros and when I updated there were problems, started a switch to bsd in the meantime, let's see what happens next. If I didn't want to gpu passthrough I would go with my Chinese x99 setup
•
u/Secure_Eye5090 Jul 15 '23
I'm on the latest kernel and it works completely fine with Nvidia.
•

yes

I'm confused by this amount of posts requesting help with updates and kernels, I mean, not wanting to sound arrogant but I keep updating and no a single problem in years honestly
I have a Ryzen 7 3700X with a Radeon 5700XT in my main PC
Second one is a Laptop Dell with a Ryzen 4700U with Radeon Renoir Graphics
And my office PC is a Dell with Intel i9 12-can't-remember and I think has an Nvidia GPU but I'm using the integrated graphics I think 🤔
All 3 devices running Arch with Plasma Desktop, I have to admit I don't have any super special software, default kernel, LibreOffice, Firefox, etc
•
u/Veprovina Jul 15 '23
Who requested help with updates and kernels though? Scrolling through the hot and new post, there doesn't seem to be any, and i didn't request anything in this thread, i'm just wondering what's going on.
I can use my system with the LTS kernel, i can wait this out, i'm just curious what "this" is.
•
u/Pigofil Jul 15 '23
You should not touch a new kernel tree until at least 15 versions, as the old saying goes. What are you expecting with bleeding edge stuff?
•
u/drankinatty Jul 16 '23
Let's start with the basic, what graphics card do you have? The NVidia 470 driver was recently patched, (as well as the 390XX driver in AUR). If your card uses the 470 or later driver, the Arch packages work fine. If you have an old AMD card, there is a bug that has been around and unfixed since before the LTS kernel -- so that's not likely.
Anyway, we need to know what graphics card you have in order to troubleshoot a graphics issue. Additionally, are there any dkms driver rebuild failures on the kernel installs reported? The more information relevant to your issue you can provide -- the more relevant answers you will get.
•
u/Veprovina Jul 16 '23
You misunderstand, this isn't a support request post. I just wanted to see if others have an issue with the kernel. If everyone would say it's fine, then it would have became a support post i guess. :I But it seems I'm not the only one.
The LTS kernel works perfectly fine, this has something to do with the newer kernels. I haven't installed anything new in a while, just updated and the problems started happening when a 6.4.x version rolled out. 6.3 kernels worked fine.
And I'm on AMD ryzen 5 5600g, there seems to be something going on with amd on newer kernels. I'll just stick to LTS and monitor the situation for now.
•
u/drankinatty Jul 21 '23
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I run older AMD processors and Intel and on the 4 Arch server installs I have, I've had no issue with kernels up through the current 6.4.4 kernel. Only side note is we did have to patch nvidia-390xx-utils from AUR when the 6.4 kernel came out to accommodate changes, see e.g. AUR nvidia-390xx-utils Otherwise, no issue - but it may be something ryzen specific?
•
u/Veprovina Jul 22 '23
No worries. :) Seems something amd specific, maybe even ryzrn specific as you said. 6.4.3 kernel seems ok and if a newer one is out I'll update and see.
Then maybe I can tell grub to load the new one by default again. :D
•
u/mikiesno Jul 16 '23
check your hardware and drivers.
Most of us are fine with the new kernel.
so most likely its something you installed or hardware issue
•
u/Veprovina Jul 16 '23
I didn't install anything new and my hardware is ok because the LTS kernel works perfectly fine.
I'll stick to the LTS kernel for now until whatever is happening gets resolved. Seems to affect AMD hardware only.
But what exactly is happening, i don't know. Probably not something in can fix at my end.

u/_swuaksa8242211 Jul 17 '23
I heard someone said there was an update from 6.4.3.arch1-1 to 6.4.3.arch1-2. which might have fixed the issues?
•
u/Veprovina Jul 17 '23
I tried it, seems to work, but there are random stuttering when using the system. At least the display bug and kernel panics seem to be gone.
•
u/_swuaksa8242211 Jul 18 '23
ya. I'm gonna do a clonezilla backup first then try it. Hope that Steam bug has gone too.
•
u/_swuaksa8242211 Jul 23 '23
Just backed up...Im about to run yay now....,.just asking has the random stuttering you mentioned been fixed yet?
•
u/Veprovina Jul 23 '23
The random stuttering was due to a theme i installed. It stopped when I deleted it. I'm on the newest kernel now and it works fine. I think they fixed it.
•
u/_swuaksa8242211 Jul 23 '23
Ya I happened to update already too today..All fine now. Even steam gaming no problems.Rebooted no problems. Glad and happy they fixed it so fast..
•
u/Cyborg857 Jul 15 '23
Same here, I have no idea why! I know there have been a few major rewrites in 6.4.x but it's never been so unstable haha
Commenting and upvoting so someone sees this and helps us hopefully :)
