Per Right Wing Watch: Christian nationalist Joel Webbon says hospitality is meant for other believers. If the social welfare state collapses, he says, the church will have to tell "feminist pagan women" on hard times, "You starve. Glory be to God. You starve."

People need to understand this:

The Bible doesn't just say one thing.

It says the thing, but it says the exact opposite of the thing, and says everything in between the thing and its opposite as well. Sometimes it says the thing and its opposite within just a few sentences (Proverbs 26:4–5; Galatians 6:2 vs. Galatians 6:5, etc.)

It's not a single book and no one of the books in the Bible are written by a single author. It's a curated library of texts that have been continually modified/edited to serve specific sociopolitical interests.

If you want the Bible to say x, it can support that.

If you want the Bible to say y, no problem.

If you want it to say ¬x and ¬y, those are in there too.

In other words, investigating what the Bible says or does not say should in no way be part of a sane person's attempt to understand ethics, morality, or public policy.

I think one of my favorite quotes about Paul, is that you can either use Paul to understand Christ, or you can use Christ to understand Paul.

I gave up on allowing the Bible to decide anything in my life a long time ago, but it still helps me understand that no matter how close you say, or even physically are, to Christ, does not mean that you speak for him. Or, in other words, I should look at the actions, and behaviors of someone, and who they harm and why, and decide how I interact with that.

Lots of folk can provide a very solid argument that he never actually existed, or at best all the "letters" attributed to him actually came from someone else's pen. Doesn't make him a more sympathetic character, but certainly casts a lot of doubt on Church traditions and protocols based on what he taught...

Yep. The Parable of the Good Samaritan makes this point very clear. I'm generally not the type to appoint myself an arbiter of who is or isn't a Christian, but what he's saying is anathema to what Jesus taught.

To be clear, Samaritans in the 1st Century were just another offshoot of Judaism. The main difference being they thought God lived on a mountain, instead of in the Temple.

In that light, the parable is more like a Baptist saying “Even Lutherans count as your neighbor”, so it doesn’t stretch the in-group (neighbor) definition very far past where Moses originally set it.

The other way around, actually. The Samaritan is the one who helps the injured man, after he is ignored by a priest and a Levite.

Samaria was a Jewish city about 40 miles north of Jerusalem. They worshipped Yahweh, but disagreed with mainstream Israelites on the importance of the Temple (they thought Yahweh lived on a mountain).

The point is that the man from Samaria was not a “neighbor” in the geographic sense to the man he helped (who was from Jerusalem), but was still a worshipper of Yahweh and ethnically Israelite.

Jesus is showing that “neighbor” transcends geography, but it’s worth noting that he could have chosen someone from a different ethnic or religious group (like an Egyptian, or a Babylonian), but he did not.
