Interesting article I came across. It says in the article that the US released National Defense Authorization 2027 draft and one of the points is "Conditions defense support to the Syrian government on its efforts to disarm all foreign fighters and jihadists who remain in Syria" without differentiating between integrated fighters, and the ones that aren't but rather just chose to integrate into Syrian society as a civilian.

It also states that a green light was given by the US in June 2026 to integrate foreign fighters into the Syrian Minster of defense. I'm guessing the final version will contain wording that foreign fights that integrate into the defense ministry are okay as it seems that's the stance of the Trump administration.

Regarding the integration of the SDF into the Syrian state, Abdi views the process as neither a "surrender" nor a unilateral victory

According to him, the real issue is what kind of status the Kurds will gain within the Syrian state after this experience.

Abdi notes that over the past 15 years, not only political and military institutions but also a new way of social life has emerged in the region.
Abdi says that while this way of life may not be entirely legally protected, a culture and social experience has formed in the region, and he believes it will continue.
Abdi acknowledges that Syria faces significant obstacles in establishing a secular, democratic, and civilized state, but he believes there are more opportunities than during the Ba'ath era.
Abdi stated that Syria wants to open up to the international community and become compliant with international law, and therefore, he believes there is a wider scope for establishing a democratic and secular Syria in this new era.

Abdi states that the SDF has played a vital role for the people of the region for 15 years, protecting them and suffering heavy losses. Therefore, he says, the political vacuum that will emerge with the end of the SDF cannot be ignored.
Abdi stated that political actors in the region are working on a new political structure, but added that the form and name of this structure have not yet been finalized.
However, Abdi sees the creation of a new political structure as a crucial necessity. According to him, the social base of the SDF and the political experience gained after 15 years of struggle need to be transferred to the political arena in this new period.
In this context, Abdi argues that the transition from armed struggle to political struggle will not only be a change in discourse, but will also bring with it the need for a new political organization
