Where I live it's 1% of your monthly wage/ month, but you don't need to actually be in the union to get the benefits, the company just has to be part of it (which it basically automatically is as soon as enough % of the workers are in the union).
But I'll gladly pay 1% of my wage to make sure the company is forced to give me my 35h week, 30 days paid vacation, and 60% of a monthly salary 3x a year as bonus payments, plus scheduled small raises to combat inflation.
Yeah I’m happy to give 2 hours of pay.. when that straight 8 hour pay is $60 per hour, I don’t pay a premium or deductible for insurance, and I get a pension with healthcare after 30 years(I’ll technically be able to retire at 49)..
Believe me.. there are reasons to dislike it as well. But overall, the benefits outweigh the negatives at the moment.. the next contract that could change.
My grandfather worked a Union job and basically retired in his 40's and got two separate pensions that kept him living well until he died @ 94. Bring back Unions.
Unfortunately a lot of unions are as corrupt as the companies they are suppose to fight against. My mom is a teacher and every union she has joined has been corrupt AF and didnt help out.
I'm reading this thread and literally thinking that these guys really should unionise! My European ass cannot comprehend this kind of fuckery from an employer.
Unions are their own can of worms.
Embezzlement is endemic.
Bribery, racketeering, and collusion with organized crime by union officials is way too common as well.
Unions have been caught out using "card check" drives where union organizers harass workers at home, threaten families, or pressure employees to sign authorization cards publicly rather than through a private secret ballot.
Not to mention protecting that unproductive slug that's good at politics.
The corporation is treating us badly and is working against us in politics.
So we'll create a corporation we pay to represent us in contract negotiations that starts out well and eventually treats us badly, works with organized crime, and works against us in politics.
Unions now support politicians that vote for laws and treaties that offshore our jobs and push amnesty for illegally imported labor to undercut our wages & compete with us for housing.
I fail to see the difference at this juncture.

My grandfather was elected leadership of his Local of the IBEW in the 1950's through his retirement as a lineman in 1968. He was very disappointed in what became of his Union in the 70's & 80's.
I refuse to blindly support Unions just because they brought us favorable labor laws in the 1930's - 1950's. They've changed, and not for the better.
