Mingalaba / မင်္ဂလာပါ; and welcome to r/myanmar.

If this is your first time on Reddit, you may want to familiarize yourself with Reddit's rules and policies. To make sure you have not been afoul of the rules, please see

A Reddit community is called a subreddit, also known as a sub. The subreddits start with r/.

Followers are not important on Reddit. Your followers are not important either. Only your posts and comments are important. Unlike other social media, hashtags are not useful on Reddit. The Reddit account username cannot be changed after signing up. To change it, you will need to create a new account, which will reset your karma.

Karma is an arbitrary measure of how much you contributed. The more upvotes you get, the higher your Karma. Some subreddits require you to have a certain amount of Karma before you can post. Do not spam irrelevant posts to other subreddits or be rude, insulting, or abusive, as you can be downvoted. This will cause you to lose Karma. Try to avoid getting your total Karma in the negative value.

Also make sure to follow our rules, which are prominently displayed in the sidebar to the right.

  1. Make sure to label all posts that contain gore, contain violence, contain a dead body, or can upset anyone as "NSFW." To see how to do this and for a more detailed explanation click here.
  2. Make sure your posts are on-topic and related to Myanmar. Spam) may go well with anything but it has no place in this sub. Please do not spam us with unrelated content.
  3. Please keep discussions civil. Tolling and racism will not be tolerated. Our situation here is not for your "lulz". Also, keep swearing to a minimum. Although we will tolerate swearing if it is part of the narrative/discussion, personal insults, over-the-top vulgarity, etc., will not be tolerated.
  4. Adding a flair to your posts will enable others to easily find similar posts. Flairs are used to categorize posts to easily be found. Click here for more details.
  5. Keep reposting to a minimum. Please check to make sure you don't repost news and pictures that have already been posted. r/MAGIC_EYE_BOT and u/DuplicateDestroyer are trialed to help remove duplicate images. Please reply to the bot or send us a message if the bot got it wrong.

For a brief background of the coup, please see this post I made.

Does the content you're posting here fit more than one community? As per Reddiquette, consider posting to other subs such as the ones listed here if the contents fit more communities.

For example, are you posting news? Then you can post into r/news, r/inthenews, r/worldnews, r/USnews (US news only), r/asia, r/asian, r/asean, r/theworldnews. This list is not exhaustive but please use common sense and make sure the content fits the target sub. That means news only goes to news-related subreddits and pictures go onto picture-related subreddits. Make sure to follow the rules of those subs as well, since each sub has its own set of rules.

Additionally, give some love to the other Myanmar subs: r/saveMyanmar and r/Myanmar2021.

Are you in another country but wish to help the people of Myanmar? See this post.

In summary,

DO

  • Post topics with descriptive subjects
  • Check the subreddit for prior submission of your article or image before posting.
  • Flair your post with the appropriate flair to make them easier to find
  • Upvote posts
  • Tag posts with gore, contain violence, contain a dead body, or can upset anyone as "NSFW."
  • Share posts to more than one subreddits
  • Report posts that break our rules or attempt to spam us with irrelevant content.
  • Credit the author of an image or comic

DON'T

  • Post off-topic or spammy posts
  • Spam keywords like "savemyanmar" "wewantdemocracy" in the post title
  • Do not upvote or promote your post with multiple accounts. This is against Reddit's policy and you may end up being suspended.
  • Do not post Myanmar posts on irrelevant subreddits.
  • Post images and articles that have already been previously posted by someone else.

Thank you. / ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါတယ်။

Discussion 💬 ⚠️⚠️Blacklist Removal Scam⚠️⚠️နိုင်ငံရေးအမည်ပျက်စာရင်း ပယ်ဖျက်မှုလိမ်လည်ခြင်း⚠️⚠️

Upvotes

English:

Be cautious of ongoing scams regarding "Blacklist Removal Services".

How this scam works:

  1. Scammer posts a personal story followed by a question to provoke discussion, and a brief mention of successfully removing blacklist status.
  2. Scammer waits for victims interested in getting blacklist status removed to explain further or provide contacts.
  3. In DMs, scammer will claim they can help and ask for money upfront.

Safety Tips:

  1. Check the Profile: Always click on the OP's (Original Poster) username.
  2. Account Age: Be wary of very new accounts (created only a few days or months ago)
  3. Post History: Scammers often have few post history or only post the same "success story" across multiple subreddits.

Burmese -

“Beware of Blacklist Removal Scams.

Scam Types -

  1. The scammer posts an experience and asks questions, encouraging readers to discuss, vote, and comment. The message often claims to have been removed from the Blacklist political blacklist.
  2. The scammer waits for people who want to remove their blacklist to be interested and ask for help and contact them.
  3. If they contact you via direct message, they will ask for money in advance and scam you.

Things to note -

  1. Always check the profile, click on the post's name and go to their profile. You can view it.
  2. Please note that the account has only been active for a few days or months.
  3. Please note that there are no posts in the post history, few posts, and similar experience stories and questions are posted on multiple pages and groups.

Advice Looking for advices regarding hobbies and career choices

Upvotes

First of all I'm 19M and I live in Yangon. Im preparing to take GED test and I don't have any "skills" to show for. I can understand English perfectly but can't speak fluently cuz of confidence issues. I was diagnosed with DDD(Degenerative Disc Disease) at my lower spine so it's not recommended for me to do hard physical work. The thing is I feel lost these days bcuz I have no skills to show for and no hobbies either.I was pretty athletic as a kid and I loved fighting in general so I did taekwondo for a while but I had to quit because of DDD. I love playing games, I'm chronically online. I do watch anime and read webtoons heavily. I do have some general knowledge but there's no topic I'm particularly good at. So I wanna ask how do I find an actual "hobby" and what skills should I start learning in this day and age? Also what career should I choose?

Advice Renewal of passport

Upvotes

Has anybody tried renewing their passport early? I live in Scandinavia and have a Myanmar passport. Because of my future travel plans, I’d like to renew it well before it expires in 2027 September , especially since I’m a bit concerned about the new smart chip changes they’re introducing.
I’ve emailed the Myanmar Embassy in London, but they haven’t really responded because i think i got the wrong email. If anyone has experience renewing their passport early at the London Embassy, please let me know how it went or what the process was like. Any advice would be really appreciated!

News 📰 Saw something crazy in china town today

Upvotes

I was visiting 19th street earlier today and I saw around 3 guys with really long knives, basically the size of katanas, chasing another guy near Sint Oh Dan Street around 9:30 pm.

One guy seemed to be the leader. He was wearing some kind of shiny suit and was shouting at the guy while the others were going after him.

The guy tried to run away and ended up hiding into a fruit vendor's truck. From what I saw, one of the guys then stabbed him around the shoulder and he was bleeding really badly.

Then, they all fled the scene before anything escalated.

I honestly have no idea what the whole situation was about or who any of them were. I assumed the guy might've been a fruit vendor but I could be completely wrong. Could've been some kind of gang thing or something else, I really don't know.

I'm curious if anyone knows what actually happened.

Advice Scared of getting conscripted

Upvotes

Is conscription really getting this bad for young people in Yangon? Every time I look at the news, all I see are more stories about young people being forcibly recruited. Honestly, I’m terrified to even step outside anymore. I feel like I have to live every single day with this constant fear hanging over me, never knowing what might happen. It’s exhausting and frightening, and I haven’t even been in Yangon for that long.

Discussion 💬 What's your ideal flag for Burma? Do you like the current flag? Do you prefer one of the old flags or some other one?

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

Obviously, this is a small inconsequential issue relative to everything else our country faces. I would accept a flag with a green turd if it solved all our troubles. But imagine a world where we are at peace, can look towards the future and have time to argue about a flag.

Which flag do you want to represent us and why? It does not have to be these 3.

I hate the current junta-imposed flag with a passion. Weirdly, it's not that the change was under the junta in their rebranding scheme that gets me. It's just...really really ugly. Say what you will about the Ne Win flag but it had some drip. Subjective, I know.

My favourite flag is the old Union flag we had after independence. It is our only true flag in my opinion. The ideal flag for a prosperous Burma would be some form of this. Maybe we increase the number of the smaller stars.

News 📰 This quote from a young man working in Yangon tells you the heartbreaking reality of life in Myanmar right now. Over 20 young men have disappeared so far in September in Yangon, and we are only seven days into the month. People are afraid to even go to work. Future is bleak.

Discussion 💬 Is it as bad as they say?

Upvotes

Hi everyone, recently my parents have been restricting me from going out with my friends citing safety issues. Apparently a relative of my mom witnessed a forced conscription thus my mom being cautious. However, when discussing this with my friends a lot of them have been dismissing it saying my relative is "fear mongering".

Thoughts?

How is life in Burma as a foreign English teacher in Yangon at the moment. I lived in Cambodia for about a year and I loved it, I have met a couple of Burmese guys/gals who said they loved the country but due to safety left. So I am just wondering at the moment about the safety in Yangon or other larger cities in the country and generally how life is as a foreigner.

⚠️ Possibly fake ⚠️ Poem for MAL

Upvotes

Poem for the great leader Min Aung Hlaing who is pulling our country out of poverty and lifting people up.

Min Aung Hlaing, the jewel that outshines every jade.

You made the Irrawaddy with a wooden spade.

You tell the summer teak trees when to sprout and grow.

You taught the mighty Chindwin how it ought to flow.

You pluck pure rubies from the dusty Mogok ground.

The grandest king the golden land has ever found.

You whisper to white elephants to bring us peace.

You order stormy monsoons when they have to cease.

You cook mohinga so divine the heavens sigh.

You painted all the pagodas golden in the sky.

The ancient nats all bow whenever you walk past.

You built an empire meant forevermore to last.

You drink plain ngapi and it turns to liquid gold.

The bravest warrior that the cosmos could behold.

You ride the thunderclouds across the Shan plateau.

You make the paddy fields of dry land bloom and glow.

A lord of seven crowns who never needs to sleep.

The holy guardian the chronicles will keep.

Advice Looking for Myanmar History Books/Source for game development

Post image
Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m a indie developer working on a project inspired by the history of Myanmar. The game is planned to cover a large span of history, from the Mon period → Bagan → Toungoo → Konbaung → the final Burmese kingdom.

I’m looking for good historical sources to help me research these periods properly. I’m especially interested in:

Kingdoms, politics, and major events

Warfare, armies, weapons, and military organization

Cities and architecture

Clothing and everyday life

Religion and cultural practices

Trade and relations with neighboring kingdoms

Mon, Bamar, Shan, Rakhine, and other communities

Myths, legends, and folklore

Historical maps, illustrations, archaeological evidence, and primary sources

Since I’m Myanmar myself, I’ve learned some of this history through school and from people around me, but I want to go much deeper than the usual textbook version for the game.

I’d especially appreciate academic books, translated primary sources, old Burmese/Mon texts, archaeological research, museum/archive material, and reliable online resources. English sources are great, but Burmese-language sources are definitely welcome too.

I’m trying to make the setting feel historically grounded while still being a fun game, so I’d love recommendations from anyone who has researched these periods.

If you know a book, website, archive, documentary, or even a particular historian I should check out, please drop it below!

P.S. First time posting here lol, ChatGPT helped me put my thoughts into words 😭
