I suspect in terms of “New Artists”, part of the whackness is poor people getting millions and not being able to comprehend what spending or saving it responsibly looks like. They also have millions of fans in some cases, who inflate their egos into believing that they are more powerful than others and have dominion over them.

In some cases, these are industry darlings who were born upper or middle class, have connections within the industry or the means to set their kids up early, and those “artists” never learn any respect for others because they have never endured what poor folks like myself call “real hardship”, or what some have coined “the actual tortured poets department” where you sometimes don’t know what you will eat the last week of the month despite working full-time and then some just to make ends meet with medical bills, student loans, bills and the endless cycle of debt repayment. These folks have a bad breakup or get a DUI and feel like that and the online hate they receive is enough to justify your sympathy and whatever behavior they think is allowed even if illegal.

Referring to rappers as “Artists” in many genres but especially hip hop these days is pushing the term. You’re talking about people making beats using only templates, presets, and established song lengths and structures for maximum profit via whatever strategy they are using (tik tok, 1:30 length songs, 2-3 choruses, 1 verse) in a matter of minutes. I argue the artistry, knowing the terms is subjective, when the product is more of a result of factory protocols rather than something cultivated through genuine emotional expression. Not what the brand researchers say is going to work for your demographic for maximum gross. Is that playin the hip hop game or is that mass manipulation?

Is there an art to marketing strategy? Is a marketing team who have convinced millions of people into thinking an entity or performer is cool as important as the artist when the art and marketing strategies are derived from tools that strip creativity from the process in favor of what the data says will sell better?
