A middle school custodian was suspended and later resigned after secretly living above the school auditorium for six months. He furnished the space with beds, furniture, and a mini-fridge, and had his four children stay with him on weekends because he had nowhere else to go.

I've known property managers that are given a free unit in the apartment they manage. This is niche, but locally I've seen people provided with free lodging in barns in exchange for feeding and turning out horse stalls.

I get that he stole, a resource no one else was using- but it's odd to me to wonder that no one thought about how this could have been beneficial for each party. But I also recognize he had 6 free months of rent and seemingly didn't save any for a new housing since he's living with a family member now.

A building I used to live in had this. One apartment was owned by the building association itself and set aside for someone who was a live-in/on site caretaker, and the 'rent' was part of their compensation. 

Pretty sweet gig, from what I understood from talking with the guy who was caretaker when I was there. He watered the communal garden plot, checked the pool chemicals, and organized the certifications for the various HVAC and other heavy machinery- he was only responsible for things that were common use; residents/owners were responsible for anything inside their iwn apartments.

He said it was essentially a part time job that he literally mostly did in his sleep (being present overnight), plus a little bit extra (2x daily check on shit). He was a good dude, too.
