Copying one of my previous comments. Basically UCLA wasn't originally it's own school. It was part of Berkeley, so they share a lot of stuff:
They used to be the same school. When Cal was the only UC, UCLA was created as the Southern Branch of the University of California (SBUC) What a lot of people don't know is that the stuff they used to create the Southern Branch was actually part of San Jose State's Southern Branch. Eventually, UCLA became it's own school, but since it used to be part of Cal, it had already had the same colors and mascot. They made the mascot the Cubs (SBUC backwards) since UCLA was kinda the baby of the Golden Bears. It took four years before they got tired of that and changed the mascot to the Grizzlies. Then UCLA tried to join the PCC and Montana was already there. They didn't want two schools to have the same mascot, so UCLA changed it. There was a vote an some of the suggestions were Buccaneers and Gorillas. Eventually Cal gifted a name they had already used (Bruins) to the school.
As for the colors, UCLA used to have the same colors, but changed it to a light blue (powderkeg blue) because back then on grainy, black and white film our white numbers weren't visible on the blue jerseys and made the football team hard to scout.
We also have the same fight song which we just stole after an All-UC day where four UCs had a doubleheader and the combined bands played Big C. Funnily, this was right before the John Wooden run, so most of the country ended up associating the song with UCLA (we did have another fight song before called By the Old Pacific and later got one from Bill Conti called Mighty Bruins).
One funny thing is for the script logos, Cal actually copied UCLA (or possibly Ohio State). It is pretty clear that UCLA was the first of the two to use it. From what I've been able to dig up, there was a Rose Bowl in the 50s where Ohio State came, and it seems very likely that UCLA copied script Ohio. Cal would copy either UCLA or Ohio State after that.
The lore goes deep!

Every time the quarterbacks name was said on broadcast, my mind just kind of shut off halfway through the name.
That kid needs a nickname, fast. There's no way the commentators dont mangle it during a broadcast, and quite possibly in a not-so-polite way.

In general I consider Chesney superior to Lupoi, but tearing down the tarps was good move. One we should copy.

Congrats to the UCLA Bruins. I guess coaching experience does matter.
As for Cal, hope they get their shit together. They can still do damage in the eleven remaining games.
There were flashes of magic there but no consistent “power of unit”.
•
u/veritek25 California Golden Bears 2d ago
For all the talk about culture and pillars, Tosh still has alot of work to do to change the team's mentality - especially in the 4th quarter and end of games. 3 4Q turnovers aside, giving up a 54-yd rushing TD in garbage time is the antithesis of 'relentless effort'.
That miscommunication & fumble on 4th down killed Cal's momentum then we collapsed afterwards. Overall sloppy play leading to 4th quarter collapse, not too different from past years under Wilcox.
OL & DL need a lot of improvement quickly, or it's going to be another disappointing 7~ish win season. Hopefully Swinney (senior C) is okay; the Vargas (RB) injury didn't look very good either.

For what it's worth I was impressed by Cal. Could've collapsed in the 2nd, didn't. 3rd put a real scare into me as a UCLA fan. I'm a bit biased but always liked Chesney's experienced staff against Lupoi's first timers. JKS and the receivers are legit. Just don't let us beat you twice when you travel to Syracuse and you'll be fine on the season.

Yeah Cal used to be Washington's biggest rival until around 1950 or so when USC became the bigger competitive threat with Oregon becoming #1 in the late 90s. Other rivalries always existed but Cal and USC were considered the bigger threats to go to the Rose Bowl.

Chesney and Co. are fantastic coaches and it showed in this game. Cal gambled on a 1st time HC with a 1st time OC and DC and it showed in every phase of the game. All I can say is I hope we learn from this and move along.

There are assistant coaches with tons of experience: Nick Rolovich was a good HC at Hawaii (and did…. Something… at Wazzu) and is Associate Head Coach (and QB coach). Bob Gregory was our DC under Tedford for almost a decade and is now our ILB coach.
But our HC, DC, and OC have never had those roles before. I like them all but they’re basically freshmen—gonna be some growing pains.

Also that run game by UCLA is amazingly good. And Cal's run defense is amazingly bad.
•
u/mayonkonijeti0876 Rose-Hulman • Louisville 2d ago
They didn't really do that for large portions of the game. They ran the ball a lot and had middling success. Taking out sacks and kneels they ran it 34 times for 141 yards at 4.1 YPC. The defense has a lot of issues and so does the offensive line
•
u/ricepail California Golden Bears • Team Chaos 2d ago
Also when JKS was chucking it today, it was mostly arm throws, he wasn't getting his full body behind it likely due to his apparent ankle injury.
Also last year, he threw a lot of picks in the first half of the season. But as he and the receivers got more accustomed to each other and the play calling, the interceptions went away. The picks today (especially the second one on the pass to Mini) might just be him not used to both all the new receivers as well as the new OC and play calling

Cal's defense was horrible tonight. It was expected to be unproven, and they disappointed. I'm hoping Tosh can build off of this for future games.
Offense started clicking until that mistimed snap. Even the running game looked good in the 2nd half. Mohammed is the real deal. Oline is horrible, but I wonder how much of it was UCLA Dline... We will find out next week.
Special teams was fine, nothing crazy.
JKS showed some great moves, but the ankle is a concern. The INTs are concerning, he will learn from this and get better. Not ready to call it a sophomore slump. Hopefully the connection within the receivers gets better.
Tosh was fine, definitely an improvement in the second half again until the mistimed snap. I think he will do just fine. His recruiting must come in handy when it comes to building up the defense and Oline next year. This year it's on the players to grow.
We play UCLA next year, I think we will do much better. They are losing many impact players. They will have a great season. I owe UCLA an apology, I wasn't familiar with your game (keep the calimony coming though).

Couldn't be happier with this.
- I love our RB rotation of Knight as the main guy with Woods and Thomas mixing in.

- The OL was "somewhat acceptable" instead of being "inoperable."
- I enjoyed seeing Omosigho flying around making tackles.
I don't want to get too ahead of myself, but 4-0 going into that Oregon game making it a ranked matchup is a realistic possibility.

This was a risky hatewatch and I definitely got scared for a bit, but damn, they're still gonna do Cal things. I'm gonna be at the next UCLA game against SDSU, which will be my first game at the Rose Bowl since the epic Penn State one, so I'm pretty excited. Normally I like to keep the intrastate rivalries semi-alive, but after tonight I'll see if I can find something powder blue in my closet. Really nice job Bruins, that final 10 mins was almost orgasmic. Cal losing by 21 in a game that was tied in the fourth is just... it's TypiCAL, ain't it?

So the Calimony is really just a buy-game for an easy W on the schedule

Nasty fourth quarter. That was a very close and very evenly matched game and Cal just laid an absolute egg at the end. Sadly most people slept through this and are going to wake up thinking Cal wasn’t competitive at all.

Me thinking we can beat SC this year doesn’t seem too crazy right now.

We will beat SC. Lincoln Riley is getting canned before UCLA brings the victory bell back to Westwood. .
