Postgame Thread [Postgame Thread] Florida Defeats FAU 66-21
•
u/Will071 Florida Gators 2d ago
Biggest thing only 3 penalties. Team never looked this disciplined under Napier.
•
u/Intelligent-Iron5545 2d ago
Also tons of other things… more hustle to get on and off the field, defense committed to chasing a loose ball whether it’s a fumble or incompletion (best practice to go for the ball anyway!), correct number of guys on the field, no issues with the same jersey number on the field at the same time…
•
u/yinyin123 Florida Gators • Auburn Tigers 1d ago
Yes, they did, in the first game of last year, 0 penalties. Then the rest of the year happened
•
u/tripsd Florida Gators • Kansas State Wildcats 1d ago
“Looked” I agree that even with 0 penalties napiers team didn’t look this crisp
•
u/yinyin123 Florida Gators • Auburn Tigers 1d ago
Oh, true, I only was saying that because the context was penalties
•
u/Ameri-Jin Auburn Tigers • Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago
I really liked both auburns hire and Sumrall for yall. I can’t wait to see what the upcoming game looks like…for the reason you mentioned. I feel like we had some fight in us in adversity and yall looked like a vintage Florida too.

u/UsedandAbused87 Northwest Missouri State • F… 2d ago
Tonight we:
Produced 50% of our rushing TDs compared to last year.
2025: 10
Tonight: 5
Produced 25% of our passing TDs compared to last year.
2025: 16
Tonight: 4

Offense good, defense less good.
•
u/Edgemaster1423 Florida Gators 2d ago
We got our nationally lauded offensive coach in a visor calling plays and also he isn’t a complete trash human who makes winning and rooting for your team literally unfun
•
u/xXBadger89Xx Florida Gators • Midland Warriors 2d ago
Glad they settled in a bit but hopefully it was just struggling with the tempo and they get better as year goes on
•
u/meatbulbz2 Florida Gators 1d ago
That’s what I’m saying. FAU was the fastest team in the nation last year, with the highest YPG also. Obviously we could’ve been prepared for it, and I’m guessing they were. But that’s a tough first game and I think they showed up just fine. Napier loses that game lol
•
u/Gators1992 1d ago
Nah, defense has a lot of work to do. Coach even said so at halftime and after the game. There was no pass rush until late and that involved blitzing and the secondary was just conceding the curl and out routes. We were told the defense would be aggressive but got that bend but not break bullshit. Not saying it's White's fault as the players choose how aggressively they cover.
•
u/GetsThruBuckner Florida Gators • Memphis Tigers 2d ago
Genuinely just watched a game from the Kyle Trask days
•
•
u/Herewego27 Florida Gators 2d ago
I'll go to my grave saying Kyle Trask deserves a statue.
•
•
u/FloridaManActual Florida Gators 1d ago
recency bias, my dude. Great player, but a statue? nah.
What about Rex Grossman? Chris Leak? (only listing "modern" ones for fairness).

Man, I'm glad I'm not the only one that saw that. Philo has some Trask in him, I really like the way he plays and carries himself.

•
u/NotABurner2929 Florida Gators 2d ago
People forget the air raid had KENTUCKY putting up 36 PPG in the the late 90s. It’s a tough scheme to defend when you don’t see it all the time.
•
u/Mike_with_Wings Florida • North Carolina 2d ago
Yeah that’s an offense that put up a ton of yards last year and returned a ton of players and staff
•
u/szboy422 Florida Gators • Blue Risk Alliance 2d ago
Will like to see to how they improve. It’s hard to play week 1 against an uptempo air raid O. They also looked better as the game went on
•
u/derbra Florida Gators • USF Bulls 2d ago
In four years here, Billy Napier orchestrated a 50+ point win only once (Eastern Washington). Sumrall did it in only one game.
•
u/SamoanEggplant Florida Gators 2d ago
I mean we beat LIU 55-0 last year but it wasn’t nearly as fun as this game
•
u/cobo10201 Florida Gators • Houston Cougars 2d ago
Man I remember coming out of that game feeling so dejected. We looked so bad. I didn’t know it was possible to win a shutout and feel bad about your team after.
•
u/invisiblewar Florida Gators 1d ago
We still looked like trash in that game. Our wins against easier teams always looked bad. We looked like we struggled despite putting up some points
•
u/xXBadger89Xx Florida Gators • Midland Warriors 2d ago
I know it’s FAU (no offense to them) but man it feels good to see such an explosive offense after Napier ball. 66 points on anyone is impressive
•
u/Edgemaster1423 Florida Gators 2d ago
This staff of young maniacs definitely stressed needing to have more points and yards than any Napier game all week in meetings
•
u/tcos17 FAU Owls • USF Bulls 2d ago
Hey man I’m pretty happy we got 21 haha
•
u/xXBadger89Xx Florida Gators • Midland Warriors 2d ago
Really think you guys look good. That high speed offense is tough!
•
•
u/Luigis_vacuum Florida Gators 2d ago
That one defender looked way past gassed on the third touchdown, I think you might win an extra game or two if you can maintain the hurry up offense all game throughout the season, definitely will make sure to watch future FAU games
•
u/kingBoggler Florida Gators 1d ago
Although it's FAU, their offense is actually really good. Like not just good for a G6 team, but actually good even comparing to P4 teams. I was actually concerned we could have a night like Michigan did albeit high scoring, especially considering our defensive track record the past few years against teams that play fast. The fact that our defense was prepared and played well against that offense has me excited for what is possible this season with this team.
•
u/yinyin123 Florida Gators • Auburn Tigers 2d ago

I think Malachi is gonna be such a monster in the ACC. Might be his to lose after wk 1
•

Why didn’t FAU get the extra play after the clock runs out that teams apparently get now?
•
u/Conscious_Text_3716 Florida Gators 2d ago

Thank you Jon for not taking the Auburn job when every online Gator fan trashed you and wanted the hire revoked because he coached in the same state as Napier
•
u/kojfefe Florida Gators • Team Chaos 2d ago
Oh I think they still do over on the Gators sub for letting FAU put up 21. First drive they wanted to fire the DC and shut down the program.
•
u/Mike_with_Wings Florida • North Carolina 2d ago
The doomers on our sub keep me away from it most of the time.
•
u/Much-Anything7149 Florida Gators 1d ago
I admit the concept of hiring another Louisiana coach not from LSU made me nervous after Napier. I just had to assume we knew the optics and picked our coach despite it. Let's just hope he keeps it up and isn't a McElwin or Zook, or Napier.

Don't let this beatdown distract you from the fact that Michigan "won" their game against WMU
•

It was such a big upset that Michigan fans had to rush the field
•
u/nathodood Michigan Wolverines • Nebraska Cornhuskers 2d ago
It's shameful that the field storm wasn't even the most shameful part of the game tonight lol
•
•
u/sincewedidthedo Florida Gators 2d ago
Feel bad for those WMU players, man. You go into the big house as 28 point underdogs against the 16th ranked team in the country, but you manage fight your way to the upset, only for the refs to bend you over like that. What a crock of shit.
•
u/foreverseptember Florida Gators • Team Chaos 2d ago
The entire game thread for this game was distracted by the Michigan insanity, trust we will not forget
•
u/_Nilbog_Milk_ Florida Gators 1d ago
Don't worry, this entire sub and every thread is flooded with discourse about Michigan... let us appreciate our corner alongside it.
•
u/szboy422 Florida Gators • Blue Risk Alliance 2d ago edited 2d ago
Don’t let a wire to wire dominating and exciting win in Sumrall’s UF debut distract you from the fact that the referees gave Michigan a phantom second and thus gifted them the win against WMU.

And their response would make sense if I didn't have a master's degree. But whatever
•
u/Cudizonedefense Florida • Florida State 19h ago
No it wouldn’t? They said you didn’t get into UMichigan. No one cares if you have a masters degree, there’s no proof that’s true, and that doesn’t mean you’d have gotten into UM lol. We do have the facts about UF being an elite school

September 19th should be a good one.

It annoyed me too but ultimately they are hot ass. Michigan won’t win more than 7 games with that schedule, they’re toast.

u/Worthless__Commenter FAU Owls • Don Shula Award 2d ago
This was to be expected…
1) Veltkamp moves the air raid offense, but goes color blind and throws pics like candy
2) Defense doesn’t get off the bus
3) Average five million points a game and still lose 5 games.. Anyways… Good game UF bros. Good luck the rest of the way.

Hey I’d rather average 5 million points and lose than go back to the days where we were losing and it was boring

u/trekfan1013 Florida Gators • Troy Trojans 2d ago
Great game from the offense, they were fantastic at most of what they wanted. Philo was legit, looking forward to seeing his performance in-conference play.
The defense, I can't say the same for. They only gave up 21 but I never felt they really had control of the opponent; FAU just shot themselves in the foot too many times. That's a deceptive 21 given up. The defense did get better in the second half but I have serious concerns with the d-line and our secondary matching up against good receivers like FAU #2.
•
u/Just-Plain-Dan Florida Gators 2d ago
Defense has some work to do, but at the very least, tonight went a hell of a lot better than the last time they were up against an in state G6 team
