For the first time in NCAA history they should overturn a game. WMU won and everyone knows it.

u/One_Hour879 2d ago

I would argue CU's 5th down qualifies but the list is very short

For the 5th down you could “argue” that even if the turnover on downs was given, something technically could’ve happened on the subsequent kneel down. Here, the game is just straight up over, no if ands or buts.

In the 5th down game, on 5th down Colorado was stopped short of the goal line and the refs still called it a TD.

The few other games that come to mind are that Central Michigan untimed down vs OSU and that downed lateral play from Duke vs Miami.

The CMU one is weird because by rule they shouldn't have gotten the play but also it was a dumb edge case in the rules that, iirc, they changed after the fact -- a game isn't allowed to end on a defensive penalty (to prevent the defensive team from committing a penalty to run out the clock) but there was no such rule against a game ending on a loss-of-down offensive penalty. By rule CMU should have lost but like, "morally" they probably should have gotten the untimed down.

lol give us the championship then for the blown PI call

u/AuroraAscended Nebraska Cornhuskers 2d ago

I think the only way you can justify overturning a game after the fact is if the last play either should not have happened or was called/ruled incorrectly in a way that is totally undeniable. Blown calls suck really bad but missed PI’s happen, and if there’s any time left after any crazy shenanigans could happen (we’ve seen fumbles on kneels before).

This and the other mentioned games have single incorrect rulings that definitely decided the results of their games.

I feel like the category of plays that SHOULD HAVE NEVER happened is different from the blown calls category. But I do think that was a BS call. Formative memory

The blown pi in the game that should have never gone to ot? Cry more

Like the NCAA would ever reward Mizzou

u/nightfire36 Michigan State Spartans 2d ago

A week from now, the NCAA will finally come to a ruling that UM was found to have cheated during the Western game, and that UM will have to face punishment, so death penalty for U Mizzou

u/ferndaddyak Missouri Tigers • Montana Grizzlies 2d ago

I mean, it was against Mizzou though

u/PM_ME_YOUR_CATS_PAWS Michigan State Spartans 2d ago

I mean if the game was objectively over, I wonder if they could actually do this

In the Olympics they did overturn the bronze medal

u/chomstar Michigan Wolverines 2d ago

We definitely pulled a spartan bob with this one

u/PM_ME_YOUR_CATS_PAWS Michigan State Spartans 2d ago

Spartan bob was bad, this is worst though because the clock wasn’t stopped

Mitten state can’t do clocks I guess

u/Ok_Priority8076 2d ago

No you didnt lol. Spartan Bob gave some room for speculation that the NCAA decided it was fine. This was so obvious and bad that you had to be the 8 year old little brother begging for "One last play" at recess after the bell rang.

u/chomstar Michigan Wolverines 2d ago

Watching again I actually think the Michigan clock operator pulled an anti spartan bob and is the reason for the controversy. The clock goes from 9 to 8 the instant it hits underwood’s hand. If there is a valid explanation from the ref’s it is probably that they actually have a real clock that timed it more accurately.

u/PM_ME_YOUR_CATS_PAWS Michigan State Spartans 2d ago

It will go from 9 to 8 right away because they just reset the clock to 9, so the instant he touches it, it’s 8.9 which is reflected as 8 on the clock

u/chomstar Michigan Wolverines 1d ago

What does a clock reset have to do with anything? You’re saying if they had left it at 8 seconds then they wouldn’t have moved the clock to 7 the instant he touches it? Bottom line is that a second did not elapse from the snap to when the clock went from 9 to 8.

Again, this is all stupid, but it would be more fucked up and injustice if the play actually took 9 seconds or more.

u/PM_ME_YOUR_CATS_PAWS Michigan State Spartans 1d ago

I meant it as they reset it to flat 9.0 instead of like 9.9 (which would be reflected as 9 still just like 9.0)

A reset to a flat 9.0 means as soon as the ball is snapped a tenth of a second comes off and is reflected as 8 seconds (since it would be 8.9)

The act of resetting didn’t matter, it was the exact tenth of a second they set it to is what I was getting at

This is like how Armando Galarraga *technically* doesnt have a perfect game, but everyone in the world knows he actually does

u/swammeyjoe Texas Longhorns • Verified Referee 2d ago

I'll admit that I think Galarraga is more famous because of how it went down. He'd be just another name on an admittedly short list, but instead literally anyone who watched baseball at the time vividly remembers him.

u/HeckOnWheels195 Mississippi State Bulldogs 2d ago

Also how remarkably well he handled the whole thing too, if this happend to someone like Scherzer he would have tried to kill the ump then and there on the field

u/nightfire36 Michigan State Spartans 2d ago

Being a Detroit sports fan is just endless suffering.

u/Phoenix_Lord97 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

The big thing with that game is a) Jim Joyce admitted his mistake and apologized to Galarraga, and b) that play helped speed up when video reviews were implemented in the MLB.

Galarraga losing his perfecto sucks, but at least it led to some systematic changes and the ref apologized, this here is just blatant corruption and there will be almost certainly be no accountability from refs and/or the B1G/NCAA

u/Mr-Cantaloupe Michigan State Spartans 2d ago

The thing with Galarraga was that his perfect game accelerated out call reviews in baseball - something that did happen that the MLB addressed, and now won’t ever happen again.

This play was reviewed, the referees supposedly watched the tape and concluded a second should be added. There is nothing more than can be done. There needs to be an explanation, and I swear to god if there’s some bullshit like “New York has their own game clock” then that’s just another fucking asterisk to consider for every game.

I’m afraid it’s going to move from “oh the broadcast clock isn’t always right, the stadium clock is”, to “oh the stadium clock isn’t 100% right either, the clock in New York that isn’t publicly broadcasted is the only correct clock”.

u/Chemical_Willow5415 Texas Longhorns 2d ago

I know a judge that would do it!

u/Express_Dinner7918 BYU Cougars • Big 12 2d ago

They would have to change the rules but I am in full support of it.

u/Urban_Meyers_Pizza Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago

change the rules like ... the rules that a referee can add a second to a game?

u/Express_Dinner7918 BYU Cougars • Big 12 2d ago

The NCAA can’t award a win to another school. They can only vacate a win.

u/SubZeroEffort Wayne State (MI) Warriors 2d ago

Yeah. 100% agree. Some calls are on the fringe - this one is ludicrous.
