Raynor's gonna have to scramble if the oline doesn't gel well. Good thing scrambling is one of his strengths. Hopefully Roehl leans into that more.

the one pass Moberly threw looked pretty accurate
Raynor is very evasive and slippery, which is great and can be very annoying for opponents and good with how spotty the offensive line looked, but boy it does make you wonder if Moberly isn't the better passer

He also had troubles reading when to give the RB the ball on option type plays. Multiple times the RB would have had tons of daylight but instead he kept it for a 0.5 yard gain...
Hopefully some learning comes out of video this week, just week 1

He’s inaccurate, he reads poorly, and he has a pretty slow release. This is going to cause lots of trouble. We probably beat Bowling Green and then I don’t see another win on the schedule.

6-6 would be a master stroke of coaching or a lot of luck. I’m glad that you’re feeling optimistic and maybe I’m being overly cynical. But while today was a good game, it didn’t exceed expectations and that would have been what I need to feel hopeful going into Iowa City.

Iowa State is most likely only going to be favored in one game after Bowling Green.
If they go 6-6 the Big 12 is god awful this year.

people just immediately assume because of the situation and losing everyone that we're going to be awful
we could genuinely be alright, we're not going to win 15 games but I don't think making a shitty bowl game is incredibly unrealistic. I don't think it's likely, but it's not insane

While we very well could be favored in no conference games, that definitely doesn't mean we can't win some. Personally I think 5-7 is probably about what we do. Beat bowling Green and 3 of our 9 conference opponents. There's enough beatable big 12 teams that I think we will pick some off. And with a very solid defense, we should be competitive in a few games for sure. We look better than Oklahoma State so far at least

I don't really know why so many Iowa State fans defended him. He can run pretty well in open space but the guy got bottled up against decent Sun Belt teams.
Iowa State has some good pass rushers, but that's about it.

No idea why. ISU played against him last year and he was pretty dangerous, but that’s because a running QB always gives the clones trouble. He performed okay today but had some big problems going through his reads. There were 3-4 plays in the first half where he had a receiver open underneath but instead he overthrew the deep man or threw it into coverage. He seems to lock on to his target and stick to that.
Look, I don’t mean to disparage the guy too much. He came into a tough situation and honestly did the team a favor by bringing a veteran presence at the QB spot. But he’s not perfect and I’m concerned now he’ll play against Iowa.

Yeah the 3-3-5 was good but it wasn’t good at pressuring the QB, so Jaylen had plenty of time to scramble and extend plays.

It is. The #1 concern of mine is his slow and kinda weird release. He seems to put a ton of air under the ball to the point where it sort of hangs in the air for a bit. He could benefit from changing up his delivery.

The 3-3 alignment was trash once teams had the familiarity to attack it. Having an elite secondary was about the only thing that kept us from getting torched on that side of the ball.
Its hard to field a good defense when you cede so much at the line of scrimmage.

A three man front worked decent when it had multiple NFL guys, but the scheme always struggled against teams that could run.•

It only really "worked" when we had the linemen AND the LBs.
It was a downright travesty Heacock didnt transition to a 4-2-5 the last few years of McDonald. Doing so would have created favorable matchups, for a unit (at the time) thar was far more capable then the LB position, which was the weakest. You then get part of the strength of the secondary, while getting more pressure and disruption.
A lot of what made the 3-3-5 work was the novelty factor. After teams played us more, and after several others adopted it, reduced the novelty factor, teams simply exploited the line of scrimmage and weakness at LB after Rose was done. The last 4 years of LB corps were putrid, and the injuries only compounded the problem.
Teams not only crushed us on the run, good QBs would pick apart the zone coverages. The three man front meant any decent Oline could give their QB 7+ seconds to throw, which is an insane amount of time. Just think what the secondary could have done had they been able to be more aggressive, knowing teams would have that much time.

It was a sad when I was more confident with a 3rd and 3 then a 3rd and 20+
Idk that switching to a 4 man front was even an option at the time the way the staff was recruiting interior linemen.All that aside, Heacock’s defenses carried Campbell’s tenure.

The last sentence is both true and sad.
As much as I didnt like the 3-3-5 it was far superior to the offensive design, which was a complete joke. There was a lot of talent (aside from the line) on that side of the ball, but the lack of varying route tree depth, deception/misdirection, and utilizing TE chip blocks ( to help give QBs time) meant the offense always underperformed the talent.
There is nothing like having a weak line and seeing your coaches call minimal protection blocking schemes on passing plays. At times, teams (like Baylor did one year) would simply go with wide 4 man splits, angle the DEs to Roccos drop depth, and tee off. I have no clue what any of our offensive coordinators were doing.
Heacock was competent. I just think sticking with the scheme was a mistake.

It’s honestly insane to think about what Monty/Hall could have done with a legit offensive lines.
Watching the staff continuously slam dudes like Sama/Sanders straight into the defense for 0 yards was predictably painful.

As much as I love The Professor, I love this defense more because the 3-3-5 really did not adjust to the meta in the past couple of years (and is kinda difficult when you don't have Will McDonald and TJ Tampa locking things down for you). As good as the 3-3-5 concept was when it was working, I hated how we did not rush the QBs nearly as often, so seeing five sacks in game one of Rogers is a far better performance than I would have expected even with the new front so I'm pumped about this defense!

Yep, and I think we've seen the same thing with Fennelly and WBB for the past few years. Don't get me wrong, Fennelly deserves a statue for what he did with WBB here, but the meta has passed him by in WBB and it's been more and more evident the past couple of years. Especially when Fennelly's idea of an offense was the spam Audi Croooks show.

the new defense actually might not give me a panic attack every time we have a 3rd and long either
3-3-5 is good for bend don't break and everything, but it was prone to some issues, foremost being letting the QB get comfortable and also giving a lot of space on "and long" situations

I’m going to take time to appreciate every win we get this season as I’m not sure how many we will get.
There is a lot of good to take away from here, lot of talent on both sides of the roster. The bad I’m hoping will go away with time and practice as this team begins to gel together.

Defense looks good, offense looks meh. Kind of what I expected.
Biggest red flag is that the OL stopped pushing SEMO around. Raynor’s never gonna be the most accurate QB, but the OL is gonna have to be better than this to get more than one or two Big 12 wins.

OLine did not look good, and I know there was a ton of subbing.
Teams are going to stack the box. I think it’s gunna be a “pass to open up the run” scheme throughout the early season. IMO the WR’s are talented enough, but it’s gunna be Raynor’s arm that gets the running game going.

Locker video looked good. This had to have been a massive relief for Jimmy and the boys. They’ve been rebuilding the program for months and they were finally able to let it loose at Jack Trice.
Liked what I saw from the defense (holy shit that pick!). Raynor will definitely need to be more accurate and the O line will have to play way better against Iowa next week. Looking forward to seeing what Jimmy can do though. I’m all in.

Offense left a lot to be desired even if they were being conservative. Raynors accuracy was not great. Special teams was not good either. This defense has potential to be nasty but will need to see against a better opponent to tell. Felt like a super conservative game but still don’t know how to feel
