We scored a touchdown on national TV

u/Johnny_Handsum LSU Tigers 2d ago

That starting QB y'all have is pretty damn good. Hard to shine when you're UNT playing Indiana, but he played pretty well, all things considered.

u/OwnWalrus1752 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago edited 2d ago

Tayven Jackson beat Washington in his only start under Cig* as QB for Indiana in 2024. He will be great for UNT.

u/Grouchy-Option9411 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

He also led us to victory over Akron in 4OT. Can’t forget that one.

u/Internal-Challenge14 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

I try to forget that one....

u/dotsdavid Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Forgot that one

u/Cartmaaan-brah Indiana Hoosiers • Rose Bowl 2d ago

I don’t even know what you guys are talking about. I don’t think it happened whatever it was

u/Johnny_Handsum LSU Tigers 2d ago

Is he a 4th or 5th year senior? Curious if he still has another year left.

u/seezuntikits44 Indiana • Delaware 2d ago

This should be his last year. He was at Tennessee in ‘22, then 2 years with us and last year at UCF

u/Johnny_Handsum LSU Tigers 2d ago

Thank you!

Surprised he didn't go to a bigger school for his last year. Looks good enough to be able to get offers from schools bigger than UNT (no disrespect to UNT).

u/mr_longfellow_deeds Indiana Hoosiers • Big Ten 2d ago

He probably wanted to guaranteed start his last year of eligibility

He’s fringe P4 starter caliber (on resume), so it’s unlikely he would be guaranteed a job at a bigger school

u/Johnny_Handsum LSU Tigers 2d ago

That makes sense.

I'm probably caught up on him having a decent game vs IU. Maybe he's not as good as I'm giving him credit for. Because I was thinking how the hell didn't a good P4 school give him their starting QB job.

u/TheAndrewBrown UCF Knights 2d ago

He struggled to be consistent with us. He had some stretches where he looked good but then would be awful for whole games. I’d guess most bigger schools weren’t interested.

u/Smash-Bros-Melee Indiana Hoosiers • Butler Bulldogs 2d ago

If you didn’t know Tayven (the QB) spent two years at IU as a part-time starter in ‘23 and backup in ‘24 (started the Washington game for an injured Rourke that year). His brother Trayce Jackson-Davis is a beloved former Indiana basketball player. We’re all still rooting for him.

u/BayHarborButcher10 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

TIL TJD is Tayven’s brother. No idea how I missed that as an IU diehard

u/Eduardo_Camavinga_ Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

u/udderlymoovelous Virginia Tech • North Texas 2d ago

I expected less honestly. We were absolutely gutted after last season. 0 returning starters, 18 coaches lost, and 72 new players. We did the best we could against the reigning champion. I'm excited to see how we do against competition at a similar level as us.

u/Stang1776 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

You guys have some players out there

u/Ok-Cauliflower-1258 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2d ago

ATLEAST your defense looks quite physical

u/Spare_Treacle_800 North Texas Mean Green • Texas Longhorns 2d ago

Obviously, Indiana's offense was undeniable, but I loved a lot of what we saw from UNT, especially on offense. Pretty good for a brand new team against the defending champs, GG Indiana and good luck on the repeat!

u/OwnWalrus1752 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Honestly UNT’s run defense looked very solid. Indiana couldn’t get a lot going on the ground and that’s been our strength under Cignetti.

u/UpsideTurtles North Texas Mean Green • Texas A&M Aggies 2d ago

We have struggled a lot on defense historically, but Neal Brown’s last few stops have been pretty decent defensive teams even though he’s an offensive guy

u/CheeseRP Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Also Tayven is a great QB. Had flashes for us a couple years ago and I love his brother so much

u/libertybear20 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Yall have a ton to be proud of and I wouldn’t be one bit surprised if you win the American again. Very impressive performance since it seems that your entire team basically got nuked in the offseason

u/FunkmasterFo North Texas Mean Green 1d ago

Appreciate that sentiment but we've never actually won the American

u/hluna1998 North Texas Mean Green • Oregon Ducks 1d ago

We lost against Tulane but we appreciate the sentiment. Seeing the Pokes lose the way that they did helped to ease the pain of them leaving thankfully

u/BoogerSugarSovereign Indiana Hoosiers • College Football Playoff 2d ago

You guys have a lot of offensive talent, I'll definitely be following UNT the rest of the year. Really excited to see how much Tayven has grown since he started for us two years ago, he looked great today. He consistently made good decisions and has always had a hell of an arm. He looked like a pro out there.

u/OnlyAndrewNotDrew North Texas • Michigan 2d ago

Honestly pretty happy with what I saw. We were in it far longer than I thought we would be.

0 returning starters, 18 coaches lost, and 72 new players. Played pretty dang good football against the defending champs. Offense looked really exciting.

Hardest game of the season over and can go home with heads high. Time to see what we're really like against similar competition. GMG

u/jedstrailerpark Colorado Buffaloes 2d ago

Yeah I thought yall put up a hell of a fight. First game and it’s against the defending national champs, and like you said new personnel all the way around. And, you still had a chance going into the 4th quarter. Really can’t ask for much more than that under the circumstances.

u/lmao12367 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

u/supergeeky_1 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

The substrate of that field is little rubber pellets made of ground up tires. It adsorbs heat and radiates it back. On sunny days the field is at least 20-30° warmer than the air temperature.

u/duncanispro Notre Dame Fighting Irish • BYU Cougars 2d ago

Dude how have they not replaced that yet, 152 is inhumane

u/supergeeky_1 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

It was a “big advancement” in artificial turf about 25 years ago. It is supposed to reduce/eliminate injuries. Near 100° temperatures haven’t been common in September in Indiana. There have been hot games in the past, but today was extreme.

u/duncanispro Notre Dame Fighting Irish • BYU Cougars 2d ago

I just feel like with the hybrid options available now (see Lambeau and Lincoln Financial Field) that teams would be moving to adopt it. But also, Indiana athletics probably hasn’t had the funding to do it until very recently.

Rooting for yall this year. Cig is one of my favorite sports stories.

Its about to be 100 and fuck degrees outside today in Lincoln. The corn is sweating. Bob and Susan from Kearney, NE drove in and are being carted off for cardiac arrest The backup long snapper is in a quarterback since the 9 man line of succession is all heat exhaustion cramping on the bench. The fans dont even have the energy to cheer when a triple option out of the I-formation goes all the way for 3 yards. Your beer is warm before you get to your seat, and the stadium is sold the fuck out.

13 of 16 for 231 yards with 4 TDs and no INTs

Casual Mendoza statline with more TDs than incompletions

Yes it’s only week 1 but it’s incredible I get to watch Mendoza throw to Waffle House and Cooper Jr. one year then Hoover throw to Marsh and Charlie B. from Nashville TN the next

u/OwnWalrus1752 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago edited 2d ago

Mendoza Indiana debut: 18/31* with 193 yards and 0 TDs.

Pretty good start for Josh Hoosier.

u/Grouchy-Option9411 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Cignetti said after the season that he was surprised how bad Mendoza’s footwork was & indirectly pointed towards how little Cal developed him. That explains a lot of the improvement we saw throughout the season.

u/Teutonic-Tonic 2d ago

And doesn’t Hoover have almost 80 touchdown passes for his career? He is coming in heavily experienced.

u/fuckrNFLmods Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

I watched a YT video this morning going over Hoover tape and the biggest flaw that stood was poor footwork at times. Heisman round 2 confirmed.

u/ilovedogsandtits Indiana Hoosiers • Harvard Crimson 2d ago

I’m still a little cautious because Hoovy sent several throws into dangerous coverage. He has a tendency to do that but I hope Cig and Tino calm him down. Excellent game on paper.

u/The_Fluffy_Robot TCU Horned Frogs • Iron Skillet 2d ago

He's a great QB. Very good for him he's playing in a system where he doesn't have to play hero ball!

BEAT THE SPREAD AGAINST THE DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS IN THE FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON

2026-2027

u/polishprince76 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Quite something to be at the point where I find criticism in a 40 point blowout.

I feel like every struggle they had is directly related to how easy the passing game was. They gave up running because they were getting massive chunk plays all over the field. Passing more means less time of possession. Means D is on the field way more on a day where it was probably in the 120 range on the field. Means gassed players and sloppy lane discipline.

All good problems to have. IU might have an argument for best receiving corps in the country.

Great start. I hope I never get bored of this.

u/Financial-Gain-2988 Alabama Crimson Tide • West Florida Argonauts 2d ago

Criticism in a 40 point blowout is how you know you've made it as a tier 1 program.

And from experience, you will never get bored of this.

u/dotsdavid Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Indiana played better than week 1 last season. Just saying.

u/Yams-502 Indiana Hoosiers • College Football Playoff 2d ago

Meh.

Corner depth serious concern.

Hoover is an absolute stud.

u/polishprince76 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

It was insanely hot and the D was on the field for most of it. They were gassed. I'm not worried.

u/DrInsano Indiana Hoosiers • /r/CFB Brickmason 2d ago

Yeah, scoring quickly and often was nice, but I'm sure the defense would've preferred that they took some time off the clock instead.

u/Fritzkreig Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Hopefully it was heat an jitters that made the D look bad, mad respect for the Mean Green though!

u/Yabrin_Sorr North Texas Mean Green • TCU Horned Frogs 2d ago

Covered, so that’s fine. Airs of when Todd Dodge coached us vs Clemson, but hopefully far better results as the season goes on. Outgained them on offense, outrushed them, and passing was close. But those big returns kicked us in the North Testicles.

Overall, let’s fucking go. Let’s gel more over the next few weeks and get to 7-9 wins.

u/PresidentRevrac Indiana Hoosiers • Harvard Crimson 2d ago

The Defense looked a bit shakey, but that can hopefully be chalked up to transfers still needing to gel

u/TheGreatRavenOfOden Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Both corners went out in the first quarter too

u/soraka4 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Was glad Cig confirmed both will be back

u/lmao12367 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

With both starting corners out it was obvious they were playing super soft coverage. I was more concerned with the d line, they were able to extend plays to the outside and get push.

u/supergeeky_1 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Which also meant that the backups had to play every defensive snap on a 150° field.

u/TheGreatRavenOfOden Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Yea that’s why I’m less concerned about the d line. I feel like the heat impacts that group the most

u/DonWonMiller Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

u/The_Fluffy_Robot TCU Horned Frogs • Iron Skillet 2d ago edited 1d ago

I mean not every QB can be coached up. Sure Cig has done it and it loos like Hoover's in a much better position and system than last year which is great. He's throwing half the passes he was last year so he has a lot fewer chances for interceptions, but he still has a great mind for reading defenses and adapting.

Hopefully he'll be great for y'all!

u/red-boy6 Indiana Hoosiers • Oklahoma Sooners 2d ago

Hooover is my mf qb.

Really more of a passing offense than running compared to this past 2 years.

Also North Texas should be a really good G5 contender if they stay healthy. That offense is impressive

u/-I-U- Indiana • Southern Miss 2d ago

Awesome debut for Hoover. Defense needs some clean up but I like that. Some injuries, but not too serious. Should be some lively film sessions this week.

u/OwnWalrus1752 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Thankfully Cig said the injured corners “will be back”

u/mel_anon Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Indiana has looked rickety in all three Week 1 games in the Cig Era, so far it hasn't mattered. This defense might need some bedding in, though.

u/the_dayman56 Indiana Hoosiers • College Football Playoff 2d ago

Definitely some stuff to clean up on D but Hoover looked as advertised and we looked better than we did week one of last year. Hopefully none of the injuries were serious

u/Luvpups5920 Indiana Hoosiers • College Football Playoff 2d ago edited 2d ago

Just saw Cig address the two injured corners and he said ”they’ll both be back.” Sounds like he thinks Khobie Martin, the RB, will be OK as well.

Eta: misspelled Khobie’s first name

u/sansroof Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

He pointedly didn’t say anything about Khobie’s status.

u/Luvpups5920 Indiana Hoosiers • College Football Playoff 2d ago edited 2d ago

I replayed it to make sure I heard what he said about the injuries and he did mention Khobie Martin and said he’d be ok. So whatever, don’t know what else to say, lol.

Eta: Somebody further down in this thread said they heard Khobie broke his arm. I hope that isn’t true! Cig didn’t seem concerned when talking about the injured players so we’ll see.

Defense needs some love, offense looked great, felt the exact same way about Old Dominion last year. Review the tape on this one and keep it moving.

Let's get to work.

Not bad for ether team.As someone from North Texas, I approve of this battle outcome.

holy shit they covered

Old Dominion felt worse last year. Don’t hear on injuries in the stadium but assuming there’s nothing bad the defense will figure it out. Go Hoosiers

Word is Khobie Martin broke is arm

u/motherbearsrack Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Saw him come off hanging his shoulder early in the game. Not great

Old Dominion felt better because the ODU scores were 75 and 78 yard runs by the QB on the same play call. Defense was far too loose but backup corners playing and 150° temp on the field makes the lapses more acceptable.

I think Indiana will be fine.

u/lmao12367 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

We looked way worse last year against Old Dominion. That being said def some health and defense questions, hopefully it was juts first game of the year in 100 degree weather thing

All things considered, team played well. Some injuries and scorched earth heat and still came out with cig’s largest week 1 win.

Special teams: as good as always
Defense: needs improvement but lost 2 starting cbs and did a good job of “bend but not break” with only allowing 1 TD
Offense: Hoover is the truth

How can you not?

Now go watch Breaking Away.

u/Mackinnon29E Colorado State • Iowa State 2d ago

More yards, more 1st downs, only 1 turnover, lose 52-16?!? How is that even possible ..

u/toomanyshoeshelp Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

Box scores don't tell the whole story, do they?

IU started pretty much every drive on the 50 if not better. Special teams returns were killer.

u/Mackinnon29E Colorado State • Iowa State 2d ago

I know they don't, but that's still insane...

Stats can be funny, but 0 turnovers, really good field position and 4 touchdown passes that covered 105 yards in 4 plays helped.

UNT spent a lot of time between the 25s. Indiana lived on one half of the field and for the most part went through without a ton of resistance with just one punt..scoring on 8/9 possessions.
