We're an offense school now

You always looked an offense school when you played us with Grinch

•
u/d_baker Paper Bag • Oklahoma Sooners 4d ago
I mean despite our differences. Imagine a team with Riley and Venables….
•
u/A_Rolling_Baneling USC • Mississippi State 4d ago
Wouldn't be long before one of them was poached to be HC, but if they stuck around as an OC+DC pair they'd put up a Saban-level dynasty with a German shepherd at head coach

•
u/TbRays93Plumber26 Utah Utes • Florida Gators 4d ago
You're defense just ate the extra butter popcorn
•
•
u/Lumpy_Sundae_6304 4d ago
66 is wild, i remember when their games was all 17-14 defensive slugfests. guess they finally decided scoring points is more fun
•
u/Fluid_Theory_6587 BYU Cougars • Washington State Cougars 4d ago
If you watched the game last week, you know Idaho’s defense is the equivalent of a wet paper towel
•
u/QuickSpore Utah Utes • Colorado Buffaloes 4d ago
True. But also:
11 players with carries; 8 with receptions; 24 with tackles. Everyone saw the field.
Even against a terrible defense, it’s still heartening to see the third string not just play, but move the ball, and score 30+ points. Even in the most vanilla playcalling, with players who may not see the field again all year, that’s something Whitt’s teams wouldn’t often do.
Yes it was a glorified practice. But we beat the over, beat the spread, and beat expectations. It wasn’t much of a test. But there’s still lots to be content about.
•
u/Orkleth Utah Utes 4d ago
Excited to see how this team will do against Arkansas next week. It'll definitely provide a better gauge of what my expectations should be this season.

I think you’re putting too much faith in Arkansas
•

Clearly you underestimate just how much we can suck at football

The Utes are superior in this…uh…Napoleon Dynamite Bowl?
•
u/msanh Utah Utes 4d ago
I think that’s gotta be USU v ISU (Idaho State)
•
u/soapy_goatherd Utah Utes 4d ago
Tbh if there was a college game with any localish teams played on a field in Preston I’d fly across the country to be there

Scalley needs to run the ball more or else my erection is going to continue to last more than 4 hours
•
u/Leading-Button-7303 Utah Utes 4d ago
But also... fix the defense 😭 we'll be burned against a good offense a few times this season if we don't straighten some things out
•
u/SooperDew Utah Utes • Utah State Aggies 4d ago
In defense of our defense, we did a pretty good job for a first game.
Idaho was at less than a 100 yards of offense when we started putting in backups. They finished with 225. Last week against Cal Poly they put up nearly 500.
So yeah, they weren’t perfect, but I think they did a pretty good job for a “first game”.
They do need to tighten up for next week though. I’m always nervous when big programs come to town regardless of their recent success or lack thereof.
•
u/Wermys Utah Utes • Utah State Aggies 4d ago
Idaho is not a good team and there were lots of lapses on defense. Shit needs to get fixed in the film room
•
u/GlassesOff Utah Utes • Texas Longhorns 3d ago
That 10+ play drive was a big mess. Couldn't stop the run vs a big RB. Made me remember that Skattebo game where the defense had no answer and didn't adjust, extremely frustrating. Have to clean this up by Houston

our (look at depth chart...)5th string running back got the most yard on the ground
•
u/OMG_IM_A_GIRL Utah Utes • Ohio State Buckeyes 3d ago
We might need to incorporate some single wing formations with our glut of RBs.
•
u/Leading-Button-7303 Utah Utes 4d ago
I have many thoughts about that game. Very pleased with the offense, particularly the depth of QB, RB and WR. Defense has some things that need to improve, and I'm not sold on the depth.
Are we about to be a 2010s Big 12 team? What the hell is going on in Utah? MORGAN SCALLEY ERA COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS BACK
•
u/leverich1991 Kansas State Wildcats 4d ago
Given the “offensive” offense of TCU and Colorado, a 2010s Big 12 offense would be welcomed.
•
u/AnEmptyKarst Houston Cougars • Utah Utes 4d ago
It would be really funny if our DC took over the team and made us into a vintage BigXII team
Guys, we fit, we promise, we'll show everyone
•
u/Bank_Gothic Sewanee Tigers • Texas Longhorns 3d ago
I've noticed that when coordinators take over the HC job, they tend to think they can continue to manage their side of the ball and do the additional job of running the program. The normal result is that they can no longer devote as much attention to their old job and that side of the ball suffers.
I'm at the point where any time I see a coordinator elevated to HC and he doesn't hire someone qualified to do his old job, it's a red flag.
•
u/OMG_IM_A_GIRL Utah Utes • Ohio State Buckeyes 3d ago
And Tech goes from THE Air Raid team of the old Big12 to a defensive powerhouse. The world is completely topsyturvy.

Its bizarro world where Utah is an offensive team and TT is a defensive team. Thanks Obama.
•
u/Leading-Button-7303 Utah Utes 4d ago
I don't wanna be dramatic and biased, but... Byrd Ficklin might be the most exciting dual threat QB I've seen since Lamar Jackson

Two separate times they left the graphic up too long and kinda missed the beginning of a play. Amateur hour crew working tonight, drives me nuts lol

Why? I’ll be tuning in to a few UM games as well just to see. It’s our staff from last year(s) and a bunch of players. They’re kinda us too now.

Idaho did deserve the ball but I doubt the score changes.
•
u/dawgpack09 Utah Utes • Washington Huskies 4d ago
Looked a little sloppy at times in the trenches, but it was nice to see passes being thrown to WRs and not LBs playing Tight End. Dampier needs to put some more zip on the deep balls, but no major injuries means we did what we needed to do. On to Arkansas
•
u/SnukeInRSniz Utah Utes 3d ago
Dampier just needs to step into throws, I didn't watch the entire game, but every time I saw him tossing it he was launching off his back foot and saying a prayer.
•
u/GlassesOff Utah Utes • Texas Longhorns 3d ago
His mechanics looked really bad in the 1st quarter, wonder if it was nerves or just like rust from it being the first game of the year. Looked a lot better later but he can't afford to play like that against other teams when every drive matters
•
u/DuckTalesLOL Arkansas Razorbacks • SEC 4d ago edited 3d ago
Yeah I’m not looking forward to playing Utah next week.
•
u/GGdpcGaming Arkansas Razorbacks 3d ago
I sure am. You need to get your fighting spirit back. Ought to be a fun game.
Not to take anything away from Utah but Idaho did lose to something called Cal Poly in week 0 and gave up 38 to them too.
•
u/perinone Arkansas Razorbacks • Team Chaos 3d ago
Buddy, this is Arkansas football. They’re hanging four touchdowns on us by halftime.
•
u/GGdpcGaming Arkansas Razorbacks 3d ago
Loser mentality. We're trying to erase that. Get it out of here.
•
u/KrypticSoul Utah Utes • Big 12 4d ago
Offense looks fantastic. Defense has some kinks to work out. Overall a great first game with plenty to build and improve upon.

Ok but play it in the Kibbie Dome.
You won't

I would unironically love this and would absolutely be willing to do this.
•
u/grabtharsmallet BYU Cougars • Fresno State Bulldogs 3d ago
For all the handwringing during the first half, the Utes were easily and solidly ahead throughout the game and almost always on track to beating Idaho by more than the expected five or five and a half touchdowns.
•
u/OMG_IM_A_GIRL Utah Utes • Ohio State Buckeyes 3d ago
Hey...it isn't Utah football if we aren't bitching about not shutting out an FCS team and allowing them any more than negative yards.
•
•
u/random1751484 Utah Utes 3d ago
That ficklin scramble back foot short stop throw should be all over this sub and it’s nowhere:/
•
u/madrocketman Utah Utes 4d ago
Alright team. I think 8-4 is a reasonable expectation and anything higher I'll count as a bonus
