u/thank_burdell Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 4d ago

there is ONE surefire way to get people to stop bringing up 28-3. But it's not going to be easy.

and it's not going to be this year.

u/abidail Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 4d ago

I'm gonna be honest with you I think saying this decade might be generous.

The pain and disappointment makes those occasional bursts of joy all the sweeter. But goddamn...

u/TonYouHearWhatISaid Michigan • Wake Forest 4d ago

It's genuinely appalling. It's so so so hard to get outcoached by Deion on the margins of game management.

u/Internetrovert Colorado Buffaloes • Big 12 4d ago

At least he seemed to let Marion call the two minute drill and he did it perfectly, last year we'd have run out of clock by the 40 yard line. Marve can work on never calling that soft zone again

u/BurgerNugget12 Alabama Crimson Tide 4d ago

The prevent defense at the end was the icing on the cake on how to lose a game and send the crowd home heartbroken

u/rb1242 Texas Longhorns 4d ago

I despise prevent defense, they've held them to 7 points all game and now you want to let up just dumb.

u/WaltSneezy Alabama • Georgia Tech 4d ago

I am convinced prevent defense in every sport just does not work statistically. It just can't be more effective at "not losing" the game when it puts you in a spot where your opponent has more chances to score.

I absolutely hate it in hockey too. Every time a team goes into prevent defense mode, more often than not you're giving them MORE shots on goal and keeping it on your zone to make said shots.

It's just a losing strategy. The likelihood of the big play you're trying to prevent happening is lower than giving them an easy drive to the endzone.

u/idolized253 Washington Huskies 4d ago

It changes the whole energy of the team too, it always looks like it takes the wind out of their sails because the offense is just usually making consistent 1st downs against prevent. It’s lame to watch

u/eye_can_see_you Texas Longhorns • Red River Shootout 3d ago

"We're just gonna give up easy 10-15 yard passes to make sure they don't get a 60 yard pass!"

Yeah sure that works if there's 9 seconds left but teams do it with a minute and a half left, it's so infuriating to watch

→ More replies (1)

u/Masmug Texas A&M Aggies 4d ago edited 4d ago

It wasn't prevent, Colorado opened up with a screen against a blitz that burned them, they blitzed again and got a sack and then it was draw against a zone that caught them off guard and beating man on a corner and beating man on a wheel.

EDIT: In general this is a situation where playing a softer zone that kept everything in front of them and away from the sidelines would have probably benefitted GT

u/BingBongtheArcher19 Colorado Buffaloes • Team Chaos 4d ago

Thank you! Anytime a team gives up a late score, the "prevent defense" morons come out.

u/Masmug Texas A&M Aggies 4d ago

Yep like any late score where theres big chunk plays is always because of "prevent" to some people.

He had NO business calling a timeout when Colorado was trying to spike the ball. It’s a QB in his fourth ever start. Dont give him any reason to be able to calm down. Make him feel rushed

If you’re dead set on calling the timeout to set up your defense, at least let Colorado burn a down with the spike first.

Tennessee really might go 2-0 against GT to start the season 😂

u/HornetNo1344 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 4d ago

I mean if we actually ran the clock down correctly

u/Ok-Knee6347 UC Davis Aggies 4d ago

That timeout plus getting into field goal range when it was 10-13 and just straight up settling for a field goal is just incredibly weak.

u/Vast_Bowl247 Mississippi State Bulldogs 4d ago

He should’ve passed the ball again. I think it would’ve worked. Colorados secondary was sus tonight

→ More replies (1)

u/MichaelCorbaloney 4d ago

I don’t see how anyone could’ve watched the game and think Mendoza was the issue. The O-Line was an issue for GT and their offensive decisions overall were suspect, but Mendoza generally executed well when asked to. Mendoza did have a couple moments where I felt like he was slow to process things, but it’s also game 1 of his first season ever starting. I think Mendoza did fairly well given the scenario he’s in.

u/dajuice3 Miami Hurricanes 4d ago

Terrible clock management by Key there at the end. Colorado looks like it has a chance to be significantly better than last year. Lewis clearly has arm talent but damn he seemed nervous. They look like a team that will get better as the year goes on.

GT just seemed like they enjoyed hurting themselves. Just glad to have football back.

u/TossThatPastaSalad Colorado Buffaloes 4d ago

To be fair to him, he is 18 with all of 3 starts under his belt.

I'd be shocked if he wasn't nervous.

u/dajuice3 Miami Hurricanes 4d ago

100 percent.

I also think the WR room is nowhere near what it was a few years ago when it seemed like they had 5 WR1 caliber guys. If Marion stays dedicated to the run that pass game will grow subtly and become dangerous.

u/UnhousedWizard Colorado Buffaloes 4d ago

We do have good receivers this year I think. They dropped everything. It wasn’t even normal. Like a comedy sketch

u/dajuice3 Miami Hurricanes 4d ago

They may be, not a big slight. I just know a few years ago they were oozing with 5 or 6 guys who either wound up in the NFL or super productive in college. This room will get better but still won't approach that. Will be cool to see how it develops really hope Prime can get on solid footing.

This wasn't the prettiest game in the world but man did it ever get really entertaining. This is a game that's nearly impossible to tell how good or bad these teams are going to be going forward but I think a couple things can be said for sure:

  1. Colorado has finally learned to play big boy football. I haven't seen both lines play as solidly in the Coach Prime Era as they did tonight. If Julian Lewis can get something going as a passer than Colorado could be a real force in the Big XII by shortening games and imposing their will on the opponents.

  2. I'm not sure what the hell happened to Georgia Tech signature ability to tackle but this was pretty bad. Their O-line got brutalized a lot in this one. If they can sort some of this out than I think they'll be ok. Mendoza seems to be more of a natural thrower than Haynes King was (and I LOVED watching that guy. Hope he gets a legit chance in the NFL) so if they can get the running game working than they'll be a more balanced team.

If all Thursday Night primetime games are going to be like this I dunno if I'll make it without a heart attack LOL

u/PeppyQuotient57 Colorado Buffaloes • Air Force Falcons 4d ago

With JuJu being as young and inexperienced as he is I sure hope he’s able to settle down and gain consistency. Hopefully getting a big win on a big drive helps give him the confidence he needs.

Awesome. Coach would have been seen as genius if the kick was made but playing for the FG there with all that time on the clock was stupid.

So many opportunities to put it away and we just couldn't do it. Can't even be mad at the refs stealing a TD from us anymore; we just blew it over and over and don't deserve the win.

We're supposed to be a trenches team and got absolutely mauled on both sides of the ball. Need to shape up or it's going to be a long year.

People fell for the Colorado hysteria when it came to “lack of size” due to the assistant strength and conditioning coach and some clips with the guardian caps on. Literally bullied them in the trenches all night long - a historically great trench team
