LET'S TALK FOOTBALL!

u/Sea_Preparation4874 3d ago
It’s obvious the guy on the edge came unblocked. Whose responsibility is that?
Coach Key were tired of starting over, need better high school recruiting. Need some hogs on the offensive line.
This year is starting out on the wrong foot.
What a dismal offense

u/ToneOpposite9668 Auburn Tigers 4d ago
Not sure what the Buffs defense was doing on that last GT drive - the WR caught the ball near 50 and split 4 defenders to gain 20+ yards to take it to the 30. They should have been able to lock that down at the 50 with 4 guys in the play
•
u/Specific-Dingo-6513 4d ago
Everyone who knows football knows you don’t try and play defense with no time left, you let the offense in FG range so you can block the kick, football 101! /s

This is Thursday, what are y'all doing making this this interesting?
•
•
u/Sheck_K18 /r/CFB 4d ago
I don’t understand the coaching decisions there at all. The entire game, couldn’t run the ball at all, every time they let Mendoza pass he was hitting people down the field. The conservative nature at the end of the game costed GT the game. That was also one of the sloppiest and most difficult games to watch in a while.
•
u/Specific-Dingo-6513 4d ago
And isn’t the coach an O line guy? One of the worst o line performances I’ve seen so far this year. Absolutely terrible.
•
u/WellsheetMotherHumpa 4d ago
Julian Lewis sucks and we still won - GT is in shambles
•
u/Academic-Sun3795 2d ago
Please, he's 18, making his 1st start with a new offense a new offensive coordinator in his hometown against a ACC team. He'll be a'ight!

GT has to especially mad about that called back TD now
•
•
u/USS-Awesome 4d ago
I would argue it was a 12 point swing because Tech ended up with the ball at their own 1, forced to punt which gave CO great field position for their first TD.
•
u/Im_A_Ginger Nebraska Cornhuskers • Georgia Bulldogs 4d ago
Didn't they end up scoring anyway?
•
u/krazykarl94 Pittsburgh • Indiana (PA) 4d ago
Not in the series immediately after that was called back
•
u/Im_A_Ginger Nebraska Cornhuskers • Georgia Bulldogs 4d ago
Oh ok I wasn't able to watch, but I saw people in the thread say they scored after. That really sucks then.
•
u/krazykarl94 Pittsburgh • Indiana (PA) 4d ago
Yea, they scored on a return not too long after, but it was long enough after that both could've happened and it could've ended 20-14 if not for that play. Major bummer for GT. Personally, they're an ACC rival so fine by me, but as a football fan it's a bummer haha

GT being conservative instead of going for the head cost them dearly.
The special teams miscue was the cherry on the cake. Irony at its finest.

u/brokentr0jan USC Trojans • Victory Bell 4d ago
Not a fan of just selling out for the 40+ field goal after that long play. The spike, dump off, and then run just felt so unconfident lol. Like you could have atleast tried to make it closer on that second down before lining it up. Plus why was GT obsessed with running up the middle with a back that can out run everyone on the outside

Nobody will remember it, but Tech’s last offensive drive before losing the lead: they could have bled a minute plus off the clock, but for some undesirable reason, just decided not to. It ended up costing them the game. Just pour coaching across the board.

Hey. Young QB. Both teams felt that pain. Remember last year. CU played GT pretty close and then they both went completely different directions after. The first game doesn’t seem to mean too much!

u/digitaldigdug Indiana Hoosiers 4d ago
The D let you down, then special teams. Alberto Mendoza did what he would. If he had even a minute he probably could've got a touchdown even. Rough go for a first game.
•
u/NixaB345T Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 4d ago edited 4d ago
Defensive secondary was asleep the whole game, O line was hit or miss, Mendoza could either get a lazy boy in the pocket or get bum rushed immediately, no in between. OC did not feed Mendoza the ball enough, if dude could get a rhythm, he was pretty damn menacing. I mean look at the scramble pass he threw. His awareness is crazy, and he’s constantly scanning the field. I don’t know what his issue is right now but it may be confidence or pressure of being QB1. I may be spoiled by Haynes King but Mendoza seems a bit .. more injury prone.
But overall, they didn’t really play like a unified team. I don’t think Tech has had the current level of talent in many years so my expectations are pretty high.
•
u/StrawberryWhich4785 4d ago
That was poor blocking on that kick, I mean jeeezuz. Also, that Colorado receiver absolutely torched that corner on the touchdown catch. They didn’t show it but it was embarrassing.
•
u/StrawberryWhich4785 4d ago
That final play was beyond me. That kick was about to boom. Colorado hitting the major special teams play, but woah, did Georgia have a major special teams break down in the end… ouch. Congrats to Colorado, GT needs to do some soul searching after that one.

Georgia Tech defense=trash,
Georgia Tech special teams= trash
You can’t beat Colorado, you can’t beat anybody. What a horrible performance on opening night.
•
u/AcceptablePlay1769 3d ago
Can only agree with some of that.
Running game (always a GT strength) was atrocious.
O line was absolute crap.Defense was lacking; D line bordering on full crap.
Special teams a mixed bag: allowed a game-losing blocked FG. Also blocked opponent’s FG and ran a kickoff back 100 yds/TD.
QB was good; not sure where you’re coming from with that part of your comment, unless you’re just uncontrollably frustrated and pissed. Which is completely understandable, I am too. But a one-point opening-game loss need not destroy a season. Hang in there, beat Tennessee convincingly, and we’ll see. Despite last night’s terrible clock management, I think Brent Key has something good going. Or will soon.

He literally put them in a position to win the game given 37 seconds from their 25.
Tech missing an easy earlier field goal, and giving up an easy block lost it.
He may have had some mistakes here and there, but between the 2 field goal fuckups, their running game being non-existent, and the awful call on the fumble, I don't know anyone could leave this at his feet.

It’s crazy that the last two GT sporting events have ended on walk-offs (HR and Blocked FG) and have broken the hearts of GT. The Yellow Jackets really are cursed.
