Hi. I keep listening to American audiobooks. Nothing wrong with that per se - there are plenty of good ones - but there's a whole world out there! What English language audiobooks by writers from other countries would you recommend?

Hey Guys, I'm Robin, an audio engineer and I've been building a delivery QC app for a while. Since last week the single file version is free, so I figured this sub might get some use out of it.

What it does: drop a wav or flac in, pick a target (Podtrac, Spotify, YouTube, Apple, EBU R128, ATSC A/85 and a few broadcast ones), and it measures integrated loudness per BS.1770-4 with EBU gating, true peak at 4x oversampling, loudness range where the spec defines one, plus DC offset, clipped samples, sample rate, bit depth and channel count. You get pass, warn or fail per value and a PDF you can hand a client.

Everything runs locally. No account, no upload, no key, no expiry on the free version.

Two honest limitations:

• macOS only right now.
• The free version does one file per run. Dropping a whole folder is the paid part, one time payment. Same engine and same specs either way, I didn't want a QC tool whose free version measures worse, that's useless for deciding whether to trust it.

I’ve had audible for awhile now and figured I would try it more since after all, I am paying for it. I have a headphone in my ear for most of the day while I’m working outside. My guilty pleasure has been Frieda McFadden books. I know, some people hate on her but since I listened to the housemaid, then saw the movie. I listened to the whole series. Plus a couple others by her. Currently listening to “never lie” and I honestly can’t get that into it for this one. Maybe it’s just me because I heard good things before I bought it.

Any suggestions somewhere in the thriller wheel house would be great, doesn’t have to be a thriller necessarily though. I love anything with a good twist or that leads up to an ending that I couldn’t predict easily .

I am looking for the best audio sub.

I love how Spotify gives you hrs vs just choosing one book. Audible seems to always boast the biggest library. Currently on a free trial of Everand but the book I chose didn't work out for me so I can't chose another yet.

Basically I want the best one as in book choices vs monthly rate. Which do you feel is the best in quality as well as quantity?

Hey so im a new reader, i read flowers for algernon and i just finished red rising like 20 min ago, and like 30 pages in i decided to put on the audiobook from spotify thinking it was unlimited. Literally the LAST chapter i hear in my headphones that my time limit is up so now im pissed lol, i was really enjoying the immersive reading, reading the audiobook and physical book at the same time. What should i do next? i downloaded lippy but they have lines for some books i want to read soon, should i get audible premium? it says that its only one book a month that seems pretty meh but idk i could be missing something. can you guys explain to me if audible is worth it and why.

Disclosure up front since the rules ask: I wrote the app I mention at the bottom. Posting because the method matters more than the tool.

Problem was CD rips. Folders of Track 01 through Track 14, no author in the tags, no title, nothing. Any player just shows you a wall of numbers.

What worked, in order:

Match the book first, not the files. One lookup per folder against Google Books and OpenLibrary gets you author, title, series and year. Trying to identify each mp3 individually is a waste.

Keep the track numbers. This is the one people get wrong. If you rename all 14 files to the book title you have destroyed the play order. Track number goes at the front of every filename.

Put the year and author in the folder name, not in all 14 filenames.

Narrator matters more than I expected. Same book, three narrations, and they are not interchangeable.

App is Media Renamer Pro, $4.99 one time on Mac and iPad. It does the folder lookup and keeps the numbering intact.

Audiobooks are the reason I built the thing. Every other tool assumes you already have one clean m4b.

I’m creating this audiobook project, and I’ve been working through Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom of the Opera as an immersive adaptation rather than a straight reading.

I’m using different character voices, atmospheric sound design and cinematic presentation to try to make the Paris Opera feel like an actual place around the listener.

The first five chapters are finished now, including Box Five and The Enchanted Violin, and I’m currently working on the Faust performance and chandelier sequence.

I’d genuinely be interested to know what audiobook listeners here think of this kind of approach. Do you prefer very clean narration, or do you enjoy subtle sound design and character voices when it doesn’t overwhelm the text?

I started the free trial of Audible but put it on hold for a couple of months so I could catch up with my stockpile a little.

The trial will now end in November, whereupon the charge will be $8.99/month +applicable tax, USD for one title. Considering some audiobooks go for $24.99 or more, it sounds like a good deal, but I'm suspicious.

To any of you with Audible experience - are there any "blackout" titles that cannot be had with the $8.99/month? Is it really that you get to pick any title you want?

Also to those with experience - do they ever have special sales or deals, like they do with Kindle?

I really want a power that is genuinely interesting and requires the mc to really think about how to use it.

No more super strength or Lazer blasts preferably.

A female mc is also preferred.

Ones ive listend to and actually liked so far are brain punch, worm unabridged audiobook project, ward audiobook project, reckoners (all of them), super powerds, fluff.

If it cab capture that feel of how taylor uses her powers even better.

Like I want a power were the mc really has to think and plan to use it well.

I don't know if this is the best place to ask this - if anyone has any recommendations where to, please tell me - but i'm looking for a specific audiobook. It was a version of 'The ladies Paradise' and listened to it when i was a kid on audible (i think). it had a full cast, with different actors and actresses voicing the characters and there were background sounds, and not alot of narration if i remember correctly. I got it by applying for audible and then canceling it. I just got an audible again and i wanted to redownload it. If anyone can help me find the specific audiobook I would be much appreciated.

Update: Ok, so i think i know what one it was, I believe it was the BBC Classic serial, "The Ladies Delight". Only problem, i can't find it anywhere - i tried finding it on Internet Archive and no luck. If anyone has any other suggestions on where to find it that would be great! Thank you so much!

I was wondering if there are any audiobook apps or services where it's more than just one person reading the book.

I'm looking for something more immersive, with different voice actors depending on which character is speaking, as well as sound effects and ambient sounds.

For example, if a scene takes place on a rainy day, you could hear rain in the background. Or if a character opens a door, you would actually hear the sound of the door opening.

Does anything like this exist?

I’m wanting to start listening to audiobooks more regularly, especially through Libby and Hoopla. I’m looking for longer audiobooks that I can really get immersed in rather than finishing a book in just a few hours. 😭🎧

I especially love fantasy, thrillers, mystery, sci-fi, true crime, romance, and darker/creepy stories, so I’m open to pretty much anything in those genres!

I’d love recommendations that are 15+ hours, but I’m especially interested in 20, 30, 40, or even 50+ hour audiobooks. The longer, the better! 😂
