So basically Starting Strength. At a later stage it also adds power cleans, which are a great addition as they train a very different aspect hardly anything else covers.

And rows!

not everyone wants to look big and bulky with no definition

squad, deadlift and bench are definitely not needed and can lead to injury

i prefer dumbbell and isolation work for aesthetic lifting

You are perhaps an advanced lifter who has a good base that only needs a few finishing touches. But a novice would be much better served by building that base doing the aforementioned compound lifts which train multiple muscles at once, and only at a much later stage they can consider isolation exercises if aesthetics are important for them.

Also definition depends more on fat or lack thereof and less on having specifically targeted the more stubborn muscles.

advance now 8+ years yes but even from the start haven’t done those 3

Curls?

u/Rhoadie 8h ago

No. Curls are ultra-specific and isolation exercises meant for the biceps. The commenter you’re replying to is supplying the big 5 of compound movements. They’re the “basics” for a reason.

Pull-ups will train your biceps, especially if done with a supinated grip
