Picks Of The Week (by u/lefuniname)

1. Sobersoul - Somebody 💎 [Waterframes Music]

Recommended if you like: Rueben, Hiraeth, clÜ

Summer's still here? Really? Can't we just, like, skip ahead to autumn? We've already got my local supermarkets stocking up on Christmas Stollen after all! Okay, okay, if we're gonna keep having to endure temperatures higher than I am old, I will take this continued heatwave opportunity to shine my spotlight on a soundtrack to chillax and unwind to, created by someone severely underrated. So let's talk about this week's Hidden Gem Of The Week™️, Sobersoul!

1.1. Daniil Sokolnikov

Since most of Daniil Sokolnikov's online appearances seem to be solely about his music and since I did not have the time to also go digging through VKontakte and go translate every post one by one after having done the same on Telegram already, I have now basically exhausted all the personal anecdotes of his with this intro sentence. Oh, and he's from Saint Petersburg!

It might surprise some of you to hear that his Sobersoul project is not as much of a new development as the discography tab on Spotify would suggest though. In fact, the project can be somewhat neatly divided into two quite distinct phases: before and after 2020! His first go at this artist thing happened all the way back in 2009, when he began his relationship with established Petersburgian imprint Respect Records, Lightwood's long-running German label Santorin, and Digital Colours Recordings - which I can't find that much about. Especially in 2010, but basically until his hiatus started in 2012 (spoilers?), Daniil would appear on all sorts of compilations, flexing his early talents in the worlds of both liquid and deep drum & bass on labels like Think Deep, Syncopix & Blu Saphir, and, well, Respect a whole lot of times.

Then... not a whole lot really. For years. However, almost a decade later, towards the end of 2020, at the height of the pandemic, he triumphantly returned with his Unlock EP on - at the time recently formed - Data Music, where he became a bit of a regular in the following years. Never firing off too many tunes at once, but always appearing on good tasted people's release radars every now and then, he was seen collaborating with Maykors, Reknek Mxtakes, Alyness, and OZOH, being remixed by Moytra, and remixing Nami, adding Soul Trader and Empathy Audio to his label repertoire in the process. And now we've already arrived at his newest release, delivered to us via Bert H's very own Waterframes Music!

1.2. Somebody

First off, I gotta clear up something. Much like the project's story so far and his sound pinging back and forth between liquid and deep, there is a dichotomy here. It's one name, but two different tracks. And they're both fantastic! Somebody revels in the soulful, darker-tinted aspects of his production world, while the flipside Woman explores the lushness on the other end of this particular spectrum. Somebody's stylish synths bubble up inside its gorgeous, cavernous, stereo atmosphere as the titular vocal shines through in between these bursts of beauty, while the drums smoothly roll on throughout. Woman, on the other hand, warms your soul with heartfelt vocals, melancholic piano chords, and a stream of drums running beneath it all. Even in this comparatively lighter flipside though, Daniil progresses the arrangement to a point where hints of darkness growl between the shimmering lights, bridging the gap between the two worlds.

1.3. Conclusion

Incredibly soulful, with sobering darkness woven into its very fabric. Love it!
